How many of the Trolls and Microsoft astroturfers here are actually on the payroll of MS? What?!? I am s'posed to be getting a check from MS for doing all this? I better start making some calls about backpay...
But, I am not asking MS for custom sofware and this guy isn't selling software that he makes available to the public. I wonder how this guy's customer is going to react when he finds out he is funding software that is going to be given to his competitors for free.
If the guy wants his software given away (he paaid for it, it is his), I am sure he will do it. Just give him the code when you are done and that is all you are responsible for.
Or, how 'bout those poor folks that don't live in a prosperous country that will have cinemas showing AotC? For the Star Wars fans (which I'm sure exist) in those countries, this is kind of nice. Like poor Junis? I bet he is downloading it on his c64 a this very moment.
If you search around, (I don't have a link handy, sorry) you will see that when OSDN cut K5 loose, they claimed it was beacuse they wanted to concentrate on Linux and that K5 was not doing that. Thus, you can say that Slashdot, an OSDN site, is a Linux/OSS site and should concentrate on that. If Slashdot was a true geek community site that delt with general interest stories, it would be more of a Microsoft-neutral site. Because, while a vast majority of geeks might hate MS, they still have to use it in some form or fashion at their jobs.
And what, exactly, is pathetic about posting 6 articles critical of Microsoft, The fact that this is a LINUX site, but it spends most of it's time posting story after story about big, bad Microsoft. They should be posting stories about Linux and OSS. Unless Linux can only compete with MS buy slinging mud.
Well, they might want to consider using a firewall that has user authentication then. Users who should have access to certain ports/sites will still have them. Have students submit a form telling why they need to use what every they are asking for. I would use rate limiting as well to keep the bandwidth from getting used up by 2-3 stations.
Yeah. It sucks. But, we are talking about a limited resource. Keep in mind that it only takes 2-3 students using p2p software or streaming audio to kill a schools connection, which is, most likely, a DSL or at best a T1. The school might choose to use FloodGate, which will allow them to limit the bandwidth going to and from various systems, but it is expensive. I do not know if there is a OSS/Free version that will do the same thing.
As far as your forgotten file problem: You could just make it available for download via HTTP couldn't you?
Set up a web proxy. Firewall off everything else. Only allow port 80 traffic from workstations. It will kill off all the bandwidth eating crap, but still allow use of the internet for school.
I am kinda glad that the Govt is doing something. It is not that I do not trust my kid, I have raised him to not do anything *too* stupid. I don't trust society in general. Too many wierdos who are more than willing to sell some trash to my kid.
Spoken like a true childless person. No one can watch their kid 24/7, outside of locking him/her in a room until they are 18. The reason there are laws that prevent people from selling things to minors, is because otherwise some people will happily sell my 10 year old a 40 of Schlitz, a copy of Hustler, and a carton of Camels. You, as an adult, can continue to play all the violent games you want, just don't sell them to my kid, ok?
Old stories or "hey, look, microsoft isn't playing fair" pieces.
Like that story today about how WMP changes settings on audio files? The funny thing is: It is Real and Quicktime that is bitching, they are just as bad as MS, if not worse, when it comes to grabing ownership of various file types.
You can start posting your rants about how this spells the end of free speach and now adults won't be able to buy ChessMaster 5000 at the local Wal-Mart.
first reply to a logged in troll's FP! Wh00t!!!1!

I would have rate limited your sorry butt down to bandwidth of a 14.4 modem.

Only allow 56k of bandwidth to each station.

True. Think about all the poor pawns that get slaughtered in the opening.

Please READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE! Parents can still buy their little brats copies of GTA3. Stop soiling yourself, twit.
You can still buy the game for your kid. You are still the one making the decisions.

Didn't we cover this yesterday? And several times in the past?

That would explain the coma. That happened to me last time I tried to sit thru an entire episode.
Start bitching about how this means that no one will be able to buy Tetris if this is alloewd to happen below.
