Jeez. I thought the /. crowd was supposed to be a bit intellectual, but most of the posts I've read about this thus far are mostly knee-jerk, anti-PC, mysogony.

The article isn't claiming that she feels victimized or 'whining' about the portrayal of the female body. It's actually quite good, IF you're capable of turning off your 'the world hates me for being a white, middle-class, male' alarms. Show some dignity and don't have a hissy-fit over a woman commenting on gender in games.

Getting to her final comments I think she has some well formed points, and I agree whole-heartedly:

"I don't want to see a shelf of pink boxes of "girl games". I just want to see better games in general - games which are more thoughtful, more provocative, more interesting, with better character design.

Something you hear over and over again in the research around what girls want out of games are themes like "open-ended" and "less-goal oriented" and "co-operative play". These are also the themes which most adult gamers seem to want, too. Talking with my friends who are game developers and designers, they don't want to see bouncy boobs, necessarily (although there's a place for that, sure); they want evolved gameplay, emergent gameplay - with great characters. Set up some rules and let the players play with both the gamespace and the genderspace, however they wish. Don't push girls away from games like Tomb Raider just because you're afraid boys won't like to identify with Lara. Don't insert gratuitous sex - or for that matter, violence. Make it *mean* something. Don't bind gender with too many built-in characteristics, but let girls be girls in your game. Allow a lot of different types of female characters, not just thin, pretty, busty ones.

The end result isn't just going to appeal to women, it'll appeal to a lot of people across the board who want smart, fun, engaging games."

Anyone who likes games can relate. This isn't femi-nazi rhetoric, so allow yourself to ponder it a bit before being a reactionary.

Okay. First, I've read both articles and found both to be quite good reads. The Rez Vibrator article was great. The thing has no real obvious applicable shape other than what she did with it. It's like the company said: 'don't waste time on design, their stoners. They'll figure some crazy way to use it.' I don't think the article was any more than a that: an article. It wasn't exploiting the authors sexuality for hits or money.

Second, the genderspace article is NOT screaming in a neo-feminist way for 'equality'. It's simply making what I see as a very good statement about the assumptions and generalizations withing the industries character design. She is not shying away from T&A games, she is simply saying 'hey, girls play games now to, why not some good girl characters that alienate us less?'. She even likes the idea of DOA, it just doesn't appeal to her.

    But, you could have RTFA.

Instead you chose to feel emasculated. I think that says WAY more about you than the issue of 'equality'.

I travel to a large government laboratory on Long Island a few times a year to do experiments. Because of some problems in the past of things leaking into the ground water ALL water is tested quite extensively on a regular basis.

Turns out that because the plumbing on site is quite old, the copper fittings are starting to 'leak' lead. Lead is a component of copper.

Now all the dorm sinks have a sign that says:
If the water has not been run for 6 hours or more it is recommended that you run cold water for 2 minutes before cooking or drinking.

This is to flush the lead out of the standing water in the pipes. After six hours the lead has reached an unsafe level, by their standards.

Last August it recommended 30 seconds to a minute of running water before drinking. So, I guess the problem is getting worse.

I don't see why this wouldn't be the case with every building with old plumbing, so FYI: you may want to let it run for a bit before making that first pot of coffee.

    1) people frequently need to justify a purchase by believing that they got the best thing.

    3) companies that see no ethics violation in 'reviewing' their own product.

For things like movies and games I have a few reviewers that I generally align with, and know pretty well where our tastes differ.

    Bullcrap.

I never did homework in HS. It was almost always a waste of time, and fortunatly most of my educators realized that if every test resulted in me getting a high score, then there was no point.

The college I went to: all the classes I took in my major (physics) I never had to turn in homework. You did what it took to understand the material, and to satisfy your curiosity. If one problem looked obvious, skip it and spend the extra time on the fucking hard one.

Now in the graduate school I go to: homework is VERY important for the core courses. But then, it's very rare that there is an obvious problem, so by my collegiate standards I would be doing all the problems anyway.

Just because 'your' tax dollars are going towards his HS 'education' doesn't mean the system is infallable. In my experience most HS teachers just follow the formula, and equivelant homework for all students is part of that formula.

Knowing what you need to do to understand, and knowing what you don't know at all are a large buoy in your professional life. Take advantage of this time to learn how to not waste time on 'time fillers'.

I think the whole system is rediculous. Parents who can't remember their little daily rebellions that their parents never learned about stifle their children. Kids need some risk and adventure and leashes like these take that away. Plus I think there is a lot to be said for the accountability of a term-long project that a student blows off until the end. What are these kids going to do in college when their parents arn't making sure they are caught up every single night?

There is no reason that a 40% shouldn't be an A. The letters are a construct to relate the percentages to broader standings. Nothing more. I think that it is a huge mistake that students universally believe that 80% to 90% is a B, because, frankly, it's impossible to write an exam that will always work that way.

When I assign things, I try to assign problems that I think are interesting, the students will learn and get practice from, and relate to the material. If those problems end up being too easy or too hard doesn't mean that every student will get an A or fail respectively.

Harder work is often better anyway. Because it allows everyone to see their limits. Every class has at least one outstanding student, and they need to be pressured to work hard too. How many people have you met that were advanced for their class and never realized that that didn't make them a genius. A good exam has no students getting a perfect score, and hopefully all students can get something right. Then the respective grades (over as large a student history as possible) are put into the letter construct.
