"Wow, the response to Starcraft: Ghost has been pretty insane. I took some time this morning and visited a few message boards just to get a feel for what people thought of Blizzards latest title. It seems that an overwhelming number of you guys are pretty pissed off. I have seen links to no less than three different petitions asking Blizzard to make a PC version with robust online support. I can understand how all you PC gamers might be upset over Blizzards announcement but I for one couldn't be happier. If you have any questions about why I might be uninterested in a PC version of Ghost Just take a look at this quote from one of the many angry threads out there on this subject:
"if you honestly think 1 game is going to increase console sales you're an idiot. i'm not going to buy a console under any circumstance. if they came out with the game on pc i would've bought it, but oh well. hopefully they'll make up for the loss by becoming a 10 minute fad for teenage console kiddies."
Oh if only Ghost was a PC title with multiplayer support, then I could play it with this fucking winner. You want to know what the worst part about Blizzards past games has been? PC gamers. That's right, it's you petition signing sons of bitches that have ruined every other Blizzard game I have ever played. The thought of enjoying a well designed and masterfully produced Blizzard creation on my favorite console is just shy of erotic. No whiny bitches complaining about a huntress rush. No junior high school kids using hacks to kick my ass while calling me a n00b. No, just me and my console of choice playing through a well thought out single player campaign set in the thrilling Starcraft universe. I'll go a step further and say I hope that Blizzard decides not to include online support for their console versions. If I want to play a tactical shooter on a console while someone relates a wild tale of sexual debauchery with my mother, I'll play SOCOM. If Blizzard simply must include some kind of multiplayer experience I hope they limit it to a split screen mode. At least that way I can choose the assholes I want to play with from my own stable of friends.

Wrong. Just plain wrong.
Several weeks ago NPR's "Fresh Air" interviewed an investigative reporter for the New York Times, whose specialty is corporate fraud. What this fellow said was exactly the opposite of what you claim. I quote:
"The biggest threat to capitalism is the capitalists."
He went on to explain that our current mess with WorldCom, et cetera, is the result of corporate greed. The system has to maintain is fairness or it will destroy itself. When corporations are too greedy, they make decisions that post good results for the short term and then have DEVASTATING effects.
He said this is what happened at the end of the twenties, as well as now.
Screwing society for the short term gain of your stockholders has a net NEGATIVE effect on the business world in general, and hurts capitalism on the whole.
You can complain about the glut of variables, but if the question outlined everything I wouldn't care. It would lose what chance it had to relate to a similar situation that I may be dealing with.
Instead of complaining, you could outline the answers for all the possibilities (patent, trade secret, obviousness). If you know the answers relating to these scenarios, you should share. As I see it, that is the point. Keep the question to broad appeal, get answers for more people than the poster.
I really don't see why bitching and condescension rate as a +5.
Here in Boulder, CO, Roger Ebert shows up every year and shows a film. He takes a week to go all the way through it, at about 2 hours a day. Anytime someone sees something they would like to discuss they can yell out 'STOP!', and Ebert will pause the film, and the audience is free to discuss. It's a pretty good time, with an audience of 500 or so, and he usually picks very interesting movies.
Anywho, I saw him last year while he did Fight Club. He spent about half an hour on the first day discussing symbolism. His idea is that there are three types of symbolism:
1. That which the artist placed. 2. That which you placed. 3. That which got there on it's own, but is undeniable.
The goal for the critic is to not place his own symbolism. If every movie you see references some specific thing, chances are you are putting it there. Now here in the west, it is rare to find a work that doesn't reference Christianity in some way. It's a cultural response, too deep for most artists to remove. But if every concept you see goes right to the parting of the red sea, you are no longer objective. (I hope I am being clear so far)
As far as the "deepness" of AI, I would say that is symbolism that you are adding, without the help from the work itself.
I personally hated the movie because Spielberg has become condesending, and assumes that I cannot understand what his philosophical point is. He doesn't leave anything in the air anymore.
Anywho, just my thoughts, with the citation of Ebert.
So, the list says all these things about how your company will resent you for forcing them to make a counter-offer.
If this is so, WHY would they offer it? Why not just say, "congrats and good luck, we'll miss you"?
If their only purpose is to get you to finish a current project you can find that out easily by asking for a large severence contract. If they oblige, then I suspect the list is just social paranoia.
I keep reading a lot of posts about the possibility for cheaters. I don't get it. Let the kids cheat if they want to risk it. If they get caught, fail them for the semester. If they don't they won't learn, and frankly it doesn't matter if they can't become mathematicians or scientists later because they never learned their basic maths. Students who use devices within the confines of a class will get more out of it, IF they are there to learn. If they arn't, why should I care about their futures? Less competition in the "tech market" eventually. You can't cheat forever, eventually you need to have the skills to make original calculations.
...make a version of Mathematica for the PDA, and the concern: "I'm waiting for moms to say, 'Wait, I already bought a Palm. Why do I have to buy a calculator too?"' will fly out the window.
Then it's up to the SAT folks to evolve.
I do A LOT of calculations in Mathemagica, many of which don't require the full use of my computer. A PDA version would be pretty neat-o.
"Landlines tend to be cheaper as well."
Where I am I pay five dollars more a month for a cell phone, than I would for a landline to make local calls.
Then all my national and state long distance is free. I net a $100 savings each month. People who claim landlines are cheaper either haven't done the math, refuse to lose their landline, or simply don't communicate outside their area code. Add the convenience of not having to be home, the free voice mail, free caller ID. I mean jeez people, it this just xenophobia? Where does all this cost analysis come from that says a cell phone is expensive?
I used to work in a satellite testing facility, which ran microwave transmission tests with dishes indoors. We didn't even leave the room when tests ran.
The two side effects from communications length microwaves:
Temporary sterilization in men. (Although a co-worker had three kids)
Cateracts. (Which when removed allow you to pick up a bit of the UV spectrum in your vision anyway. Much prettier skies.)
And this was all at way higher power than my damn cell phone. I must admit though, that I never set my phone in my lap when making calls on the headset.
The Thompson experiment, or the modern manifestatin of, is by far my favorite.
Electron gun in a helmholtz coil, where with just a bit of E&M you can figure out the charge to mass of an electron. Very pretty as well, with the glowing electron path being steered into a loop.
Or shooting the falling monkey. It entertains the kids, and really hits home the idea that all things fall at the same rate, no matter how fast they are going laterally.
Too true. Glass does flow in old house windows. The parent article that argues that it doesn't makes the rediculous argument that maybe "all those old windows were just put up that way". As far as optics not changing over the course of a few days, I suspect (and of course, I don't KNOW) that it has very much to do with quality of glass, and fundamental material.
Anyway, the problem comes from the initial definition of solid. It is not unusual to simply define solid as crystalline, leaving glass out of the grouping because it is amorphous. Ever do x-ray scattering off glass? No peaks. But if you choose to call things that don't change "under reasonable forces" solid, then glass is as well. But I claim that that is a very poor definition. See the parent about pitch!
I bought a pc game recently that ended up not being complete, and wouldn't run on my machine, so I took it back, with the intention of returning the open one for an unopened one (I'd already gone through trying to get Best Buy to take it back as defective).
Problem was, they opened my new box before they would let me out of the store, just to make sure I wasn't going to return it again.
IIRC: antenna length for these bad boys should be about a quarter wavelength.
For an 800MHz phone that is 9cm.
For a 1900MHz phone that is only 4cm.
You can have a much smaller phone for same quality reception, or you can have a small 800MHz phone with shitty reception.
"size does matter, only in the spy world..."
