It feels weird saying this but street performers in China have had QR codes for both WeChat and Alipay for a while now.
It's been around so long it isn't even an a novelty any more.
When I was running a LAN center we had the same problem. I was able to solve it using HTB (QOS) and IPTables on a Linux router. I don't know if enterprise hardware can do it but it works really well.
Instead of doing QOS by connection you can either do it via destination IP address (fairly normal) or source IP address (less normal). Because of the way QOS works source based QOS limits download speed while destination based QOS limits upload speed.
What I did was use IPTables to tag the packets and then HTB to provide QOS. This means you need 1 IPTable rule and HTB rule per IP address so this would only work for a limited number of users but it works really well.
The main thing that you need to do is OCR the documents when you scan them in (You can convert non-OCR PDFs into OCR PDFs but I don't know anything that can search them before you put text in them). On Linux the two mains ones that I know of are Tracker and Beagle (http://www.linux.com/feature/143259).
I know these are not all open source or have ewb interfaces but they are really easy to use. You just put the files in folders and point the desktop search at them. Great for someone that doesn't know a lot about computers.
It generally doesn't start like this but they end up like this one step at a time.
To start off with IT is really helpful but then different departments start to abuse the IT department:
Sales ask IT to help them with charts, report, power point slides
Department ask them to rush through a project
Managers ask them to make a minor change.
Generally the IT department starts off without any power and they do what they are told until something goes wrong:
To many IT staff are required because they are all making charts, reports, power point slides
Projects that a rushed through fail.
Minor changes break the whole system
To stop these problems from happening procedures are put in place by management:
A request needs to be submitted before work is done
Project have to be tested which takes time
Ever minor little change needs to be submitted as a request
Often IT can't change the procedures unless they file in paperwork and even then because they are a service department they are often not allowed to. They might have to convince someone else in another department to fill in the paperwork to change the procedures that they have to follow.
I'm not saying that it doesn't suck but it's generally not because they are jerks. It's because they are covering their buts just like everyone else.
Windows Update Service is cool but if you've only got 20 computers and don'e have a server setup already it may be a bit of an overkill.
Personally I've been using a tool called AutoPatcher http://www.autopatcher.com/ which includes all the updates and a number of other standard companents, like flash, java etc.
If you have seen it yet then check it out. It soulds like it will be exactly what you are looking for.
Basically if I was in the same situation I'd double check the contract when I signed up. Always try and think what's the worst that could happen.
My guess is that you would have gotten vested shares after either 12 months or 24 months. If that's the case then add an escape clause that says something like "The share will be immediately vested immediately upon the termination of the contract unless the contract is terminate by myself or is terminate for gross negligence." While you can could just add it at the end and get both of you to sign the contract it would be better to get a lawyer to write it up.
After being involved in two startup companies the most important thing to learn about is the escape clauses. If things go badly or one party wants to rip the other party off how can you terminate the agreement? Always have escape clauses.
As some other post hove mentioned would a.us or a.net be just as good considering they are about $10? If you really want to the.com but can get the others then buy them and tell the seller that you don't really need the.com because you already have the.net and.us you're only willing to pay $100 to $200 to get it as well.
You can do the same thing with online.com, int.com, home.com etc.
That eing said I wouldn't make an offer much under $100 as I expect they'd probably reject it. If you make the offer to low they're likely to just make it into a parked domain with adds.
Here is the problem from my perspective. Lots of IT people have the mindset of 'your work' vs 'their work' because often it's the difference between what they've been hired to do and what a user wants them to do.
They are hired to keep everything up and running, implement new systems and plan ahead. Often because they are competent they also get to do other things like format and excel spreadsheet. Which then turns into "create a summary page, automate the process and draw conclusions". If I'm doing that then what is the point of the sales manager???? Some other examples:
* Training the training officer on how to use word. * Video editing for the company day. * Creating power point slides for presentations.
So when someone else is hired to do something but isn't capable of doing that because they aren't computer literate I consider that me taking time out of 'my work' (keeping the backend working smoothly) and helping you with 'your work' (what you a payed to do). Now when the company gets angry at me because the backend stops working because I've been helping everyone else to do the jobs they are paid to do I get grumpy and stop helping people with 'their work' because now the company has told me not to help any more because then bad things happen.
So the timeline is something like this:
1. My Work - New employee. 2. My work + your work - You discovered I was competent. Company agrees. 3. Less of my work and more of your work - You found it was easier for me to solve the problem than figure it out yourself. Company agrees. 4. My work isn't getting done so something minor goes wrong. I'm told to do my job and policies are put in place to make sure it doesn't happen again but I still have to help you when you need it. 5. My work isn't getting done and now I have lots of documentation to fill in as well as helping you. I can know choose two of the following documentation, my work and your work. 5.i. I choose not to do your work. You yell and I get told to do it. 5.ii. I choose not to document. I get yelled at and told that I have to follow policy. 5.iii. I choose not to do my work. The company is happy, your happy BUT 6. Something big fails. The company gets really made I explain why it happened and they tell me to "do my work" 7. You ask me to do something BUT the company has told me that I'm not allowed to without documentation so I tell you that you need documentation for me to help you and you complain. 8. Present.
I use to have this problem and what I ended up doing was charging for support. Basically you say that more and more people are asking for help and you don't have enough time to help everyone. Since you want to be fair and don't really mind helping rather than help "some people" and not others you've decided to charge a service fee so that people that REALLY need help can still ask for it.
Realise that the main idea behind the fee is to stop people from calling and encourage them to call other people that are free / cheaper. I charge $50 AUD per hour with a minimum of 1 hour. It's then up to you if you charge it or not. If you want to be nice you can waive it "just this once" etc.
Most of your request will go away and everyone understands why. There isn't really any backlash as long as you comunicate clearly that you are charging money to "fairly filter calls" and that the other alternative is not calling me at all.
Part of my point (which got a bit lost in this post) is that in many countries it's a lot harder to separate civilians and militants.
I'm not trying to say that it is not immoral and wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right. I know that but saying stuff is a lot easier than living it.
What about the army reserve is it civilian or militant? What about retired soldiers, soldiers on leave etc. If your town was bombed because it had soldier's retirement village in it which the enemy had decided were actual military leaders (or potential leaders). How would you feel? From your perspective a bunch innocent old people were just killed plus a school that just happened to be next to it. It was unprovoked. Your not going to think... hmm I can see how it could be seen as a threat, you'll feel outraged and angry or depressed and sad. What you do with that emotional energy is now your choice, weather it is for good or evil.
The other thing to be aware of is that it's not just a military war that is being fought. It's also an economic war and obviously religious war. As far as economy goes most of the targets have been the equivalents of generals and higher. Taking out key people in a war is much more effective than taking out normal soldiers.
We can't try to say it isn't an economical war because we use trade embargoes, subsidise local business, influence business ventures with countries we like etc. We cripple countries we don't like but trying to stop other countries from doing business with them. As far as economic warfare goes most of the targets have been anything but innocent civilians.
Is it right? No. Should people do it? No. Do I think it's as black and white? No.
It's a lot more subjective than that. We talk about religion and say that Muslims are to blame but Christians did the same thing during the Crusades. We can't say that's religion itself is to blame as the most of Hitler's ideas for his superior race were based on atheism and evolution. Everything seems to have it's dark little secrets but likes to ignore them and think that they've improved since then but only time will tell.
The other reason is that our leaders who might themselves be inept, think that the way America works is the way other societies work and think. In areas where terror is cultivated, folks are willing to do stuff for free...all in the hope that some divine power will reward them sometime in future.
You just don't get it do you? Most of the time people don't do things for religion. Generally religion is used as a scapegoat, excuse, reason etc. The only people that can be controlled by religion are the same people that can be controlled by anyone with charisma.
Most acts of violence (terrorism is defined by those in power) are driven by fear, anger power and greed. The people at the top are generally driven by power and greed whereas the people at the bottom are generally driven by fear and anger. They are people just like you and me that have been driven into situations where they feel that their acts are their only way out.
I read an article from a Russian journalist that summed it really well:
Just after Russia conquered Afghanistan this journalist visited a major military base that they'd taken over by bombing it. The major military based ended up being a civilian village. As the journalist entered the village he saw a father holding his daughter that had been killed in the bombing. As they drove past the father looked up with hate in his eyes at the truck. At this moment he said he knew they wouldn't be able to hold Afghanistan. He said he realised that they people had nothing. This father who may have previously been a supported of the Russians was now there number one enemy and would do anything to get revenge. He had nothing and the only thing he had (family) was now taken away. Every time Russia had a victory they'd create more soldiers with nothing to live for. In the end Russia pulled out because they weren't able to hold it.
If Fiji (crazy example on purpose) bombed America and took it over in a couple of days and decimated America's defences so they'd never be able to regain control. How many people could honestly say they'd just sit around and be peaceful? How many people would rally around anyone and anything to try and get justice even if it involved violence?
People always try to demonise terrorist and distance themselves as much as possible even though we'd often act in a similar way if the roles were reverse.
It's always a choice and I hope that if I was put in that situation I'd act differently but to be honest I don't know what I'd do if family was killed infront of my eyes. I don't think I'd be as honourable as I like to imagine I would be.
We were using Jasper Reports with IReport and OpenReports for about a year until management got jumpy and not being able to hire anyone with Jasper expereince and migrated to Crystal.
From my expeience it was great. The only thing it didn't do for us was Cross Tab reports but that was added after we'd migrated to Crystal. It's been around the longest and has a fairly nice base of third party apps. I had a look at some of the other solutions but at that time they were still in Alpha. It's nice to see that they've made lots of progress.
So personaly I'd recommend checking out Jasper for a day and going from there.
Sorry about this rant but it really annoys me when people mix up concepts and use them interchangeably.
---- Natural selection is the process by which attribute (certain genes) of a population are removed or reduced because of the environment.
Example: You have a population of rabbits. Half of them are put in boxes and are moved north where it snows and there are fewer predators. The other half is moved south where it is hotter and there are more predators. If you come back in a couple of hundred years the rabbits in the north will have longer hair and will be slower and store more fat whereas the one that were moved south would be faster and have shorter hair. Now the important thing to realise is that during this time no new information (DNA) has been added that wasn't in the original population. All that has happened is that information (DNA) has been removed. Depending on how long the populations are removed from each other for and how different the populations are they can lose the genes all together. Often some of the genes are recessive so if you swapped the south and north rabbits around they would eventually swap characteristics (As long as they survived the transition and enough genetic material survived). It the rabbits are isolated long enough the rabbits could either lose the combination of genes that are required for long or short hair.
---- Evolution on the other hand talks about how mutations while over time cause one species to change into another.
I can't give you an example because all observable mutation don't change animals from one species to another they just change the attributes of a species (e.g. blue roses aren't natural but they are still roses). If I knew of an example I'd share it but I can't find any. The wingless beetles are still beetles. The different finches are still finches.
----
So the fact that the Australian cane toads on average have a longer average doesn't have jack to do with evolution and has everything to do with natural selection. Get the concepts right, they aren't the same! Cane toads with longer legs spread faster and have less competition from other cane toads is my guess. Notice that it's only the average length, which means cane toads in other countries have legs that are just as long as the cane toads in Australia so the genetic information isn't new. Basically cane toads in Australia are losing the genetic information to have short legs.
On a slightly related note: This is one of the main reasons why preserving different varieties of plants is a booming industry at the moment as they are dying out and if they aren't preserved the genes will be gone forever (well not entirely true but till we know a lot more about genes it is). Without keeping the old seeds you can't add genetic information for reduced water consumption or increase heat resistance that the other seeds had (but they had lower crop rates). By getting the old seeds and breeding them with the current high yield seeds they can get a slightly lower yielding crop that uses less water and is more resistant to heat so they will provide a better crop in drought affect areas, etc.
Just remember that. It's not half a request it's a full request. The easiest way to think about it is imagine instead of using AJAX you reload the page.
Now that isn't quite true as you only reload part of the page.
The common example is google sugest. Instead of a list of searches lets try a list of products. If you use AJAX against a database of 1000 products and you had say 5 users using AJAX hiting the database. If you just did a select each time it would be really bad. At least 5 database hits per second. In the old environment it would have been 1 hit every second (assuming it took 5 seconds to fill in the form). So in this case you're increased your database load by more than 5 times (if you used like instead of = in the SQL).
To get around this you have a number of options. Here some of the ideas I've seen 1. Add columns to the product table with 1, 2, 3, 4 characters and index the columns. This means you can use = instead of like which is faster. 2. Hard code the products in an array. 3. Use has files. EG create 10 has files for different lengths. Then check the length of the imput and then load the correct hash file and look up the key.
The basic idea concept is try and do some kind of work upfront to decrease the overhead of each call because you'll end up having a lot more requests.
The problem is that evolution ISN'T scientific.
It isn't verifiable.
It isn't repeatable.
It isn't falsifiable.
It is as much a religion as anything else. It is just another crazy idea. You can't prove evolution any more than you can prove that we are a computer simulation that started last week. If you follow the so called evolutionary tree and then look at the genetics it makes no sense. You jump all over the place as far a chromozones go. If you are going to add 10 chromozones or get rid of that many it has to happen fairly quickly. Here is the options:
1. It happens quickly - then we should be able to observe it happening.
2. It happens slowly - in which case we should see some kinds of inbetween stages.
The problem is that there are no inbetween stages but if you then accept that it can happen quickly then people reject the idea. People look around them see that it isn't happening so it isn't possible. Most people I talk to fall in the what I can the stack overflow catagory. Example dialog:
Me: If you leave a rock here for a year it will turn it to a frog.
Them: No it wont. That's rubish.
Me: But if I leave it here for a 1,000,000,000 it might.
Them: *Stack Overflow. I can't even comprehend a million years* I guess anything is possible over a million years.
The other thing that ticks me off is when people treat natural selection as if it was evolution. Natural selection is about removing and using existing information. Whereas evolution is about creating new information. The first one has been observed. The beetles LOSING wings. The fintches LOSING the genes for short beaks. The fintches LOSING the genes for long beaks.
Anyway I've ranted for to long.
Hi,
The easiest way for people to see updates ASPA is to use Tortoisecvs or Tortoisesvn it's much easier to use than WinCVS. As for multiple people editing MS Project the only solution is to change it to a server configuration (We have it set up that way at our work.) Getting multiple people to edit a word document will require sharepoint but that will cost you big time.
My dad has a similar set-up. Basically the real question is were are the risks. Are you paying them from sales, contract or an hourly rate.
If it is just from sales then it is generally 50/50 (equal risk). If you don't get a sale then they don't get money and if you don't have a product you can't make money.
If they are getting an hourly rate or a contract payment then they should get less after all they are risking a lot less.
It also depends on your marketing strategy are you the only suppliers or do you have affiliates? If you have affiliates then you generally split the wholesale price and you keep the commission. The main reason being that if the programmer think it is unfair there is nothing that stops him/her from being an affiliate and getting the same commission if they think it is that easy (Exactly the same deal for you and them).
Just remember that you could get other developers and they could get other marketers but together it is better for both of you.
The main thing to keep in mind is that you are talking about risk not skill. You could be amazing or they could be amazing but the commission isn't based on that as it hasn't happened yet. I don't care if you're both pathetic or great at your jobs, if the product doesn't ship you both get nothing. If one group is risking less because they are getting paid something even if a product doesn't ship then they are risking less and should get paid less. That is why sales people can earn more because it is a lot easier for them to earn less.
If you aren't fair why should they put in effort to make it a good product and why should you bother trying to sell it?
First of all I'm white, not American, not poor, from a poor background and reasonably bright. I also went to Christian Schools which are below private schools but above public schools in our country.
That out of the way. From your post most of the problems you had in your childhood weren't based on your skin color but rather your environment.
In our family my mother always made education a priority. The bigest thing that stands out in my childhood is that she gave us options. She would go the the libraries, look in papers, on boards and encourage us to do things. Most of them cost nothing (Council Initiatives) or very little. I got picked on by people at school constantly but I'd never let that stop me. She taught me how to learn by myself and gave me the freedom to.
Being a white male I've grown up most of my life being told that I'm the oppressor. Of women, minorities, poor, etc. It always seems to be a white male. The stupid thing was that everyone over conpensated. The girls always got alot more attention than the boys partly because a few of the boys would waste a lot of class time so all the rest of the boys would get less and partily because the media kept on going on about how girls were disadvantaged.
I got no advantages outside of my family and yet every time I achived something it never seemed to mater because I was a white male and that seemed to mean that my achivements didn't seem to count as much.
I guess I'm just bitching because I got picked on a lot a school and in the end realised that the people around me wouldn't mater in a couple of years and got on with my life. I was miserable but because I'm white no one seems to care if my skin was another color people would now I think that is just as stupid.
A couple of final comments to finish off with: * Mario was originaly a light brown color. I expect that he got whiter because it has a higher contrast with black. (The Carton effect has a black outline) * Lots of games are based in white male history. * Lots of the newer games I've played have customisable heros. You pick the face, color etc. * Lots of games are based on movies, books, prior content that dictate the race and sex.
Personally I hate how lots of the bad guys are often white males. I'd really like to see more female african villains as I think they are under represented but I doubt I will.
That use to be true but not so much these days. In the past I would have agreed with you but recently things have started to change. We've had numerous requests from Europe for a Linux port of our software. Enough to make it worth while (if we had time to port it). Our product is around the $50 mark.
Basically what has happened is Linux has moved from the Bleeding Edge market to the Corporate Desktop. Our company has also baught a package for $300.
Basically how much work do you want? My dad started charing people so they would stop calling him as much. He charges $50 dollars and hour (1 hour minimum). The idea is that they won't call him for things like formating word documents. But if they do then he won't feel any resenment towards them after all he just made $50.
Here is my thoughts: *Charge to low ($20) and people will abuse you. You'll get to much work and be miserable. *Carge to high and people will expect you to do magic and resent/hate you.
So charge slightly more than most people would like to pay. That means they will think twice before calling and try someone else but if they want quality they will come to you. Believe me you don't want cheap customers they are more trouble than they are worth.
Give someone a peice of software like a spam filter and then after 30 days it stops working and they have to register - At this stage they care.
They buy it and then try to use it on there notebook as well but they can't - At this stage they care.
They tell there friend that they to can get rid of spam but they'll have to pay for it - At this stage they care.
They upgrade there email client and they have to upgrade the spam filter - At this stage they care.
They get a second account but to filter two accounts you need the "Pro" version - At this stage they care.
They decide to use it at work but the license is a non commercial license so they have to upgrade to the enterprise version - At this stage they care.
So while people don't care about the license in a static world, once things start to change they often do. When I tell someone that something is "Open Source" they know that they are able to do what ever they want with it even if they don't use the code.
An example. In the past there were about 5 different ftp clients that people I know use to use. You'd go to a friends place and they would all have a different client. No one would want to change because they'd haveto register again or figure out a new interface. Last year I changed to filezilla and over the last year almost every other FTP client has been replaced.
Why?
Well no one wanted to pay to upgrade there client so generally it was 1 or 2 versions behind the latest version (which had features they would have liked)and no one would change because if they changed they may as well have upgraded. By using filezilla which had most of the features they wanted (if a bit rough around the edges initally) and knowing that they wouldn't be stuck in the same position they were currently in they slowly changed but once a couple of them changed almost all the rest did straight away expect for a few that took longer.
On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd put most of them at about 6. 1 being monotone and 10 being with backing music, sound effects and great dialog.
The speaker isn't amazing but he is reasonable. Most of the books are in the public domain but some of them aren't. There is a lot of clasics and instead of buying the DVDs you can download them.
I think I figured it would take over 1 year listening none stop to hear them all.
It feels weird saying this but street performers in China have had QR codes for both WeChat and Alipay for a while now. It's been around so long it isn't even an a novelty any more.

Since you only have one person that needs to access the files I would just use Desktop Search. Personally I like Google Desktop ( http://desktop.google.com/ ) & Copernic Desktop Search ( http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/index.html ). Here is an article reviewing some of them - http://lifehacker.com/400365/five-best-desktop-search-applications.

Hi,
It happens with any mapped drive. If you map a drive as the next avalible letter then plug in a USB device it will do the same thing.

The company is happy, your happy BUT
6. Something big fails. The company gets really made I explain why it happened and they tell me to "do my work"
Part of my point (which got a bit lost in this post) is that in many countries it's a lot harder to separate civilians and militants.
... hmm I can see how it could be seen as a threat, you'll feel outraged and angry or depressed and sad. What you do with that emotional energy is now your choice, weather it is for good or evil.
Your not going to think

Natural selection is the process by which attribute (certain genes) of a population are removed or reduced because of the environment.

Evolution on the other hand talks about how mutations while over time cause one species to change into another.
Here some of the ideas I've seen
Here is the options: 1. Example dialog: Me: If you leave a rock here for a year it will turn it to a frog.
Hi, The easiest way for people to see updates ASPA is to use Tortoisecvs or Tortoisesvn it's much easier to use than WinCVS. As for multiple people editing MS Project the only solution is to change it to a server configuration (We have it set up that way at our work.) Getting multiple people to edit a word document will require sharepoint but that will cost you big time.
Hi,
My dad has a similar set-up.
DLLs are effectively shared libraries but COM and IPC are very different.
While COM can be used for IPC the main thing it is used for is embeding one application inside another.
In Gnome it's Called Bonobo which is built ontop of IPC.
A couple of final comments to finish off with:
* Mario was originaly a light brown color. I expect that he got whiter because it has a higher contrast with black. (The Carton effect has a black outline)
* Lots of games are based in white male history.
Here is my thoughts:
*Charge to low ($20) and people will abuse you.
People don't care until it affects them.
They didn't care about the license but they did care about the freedom.

For $120USD you can buy 7 DVD of audio books.
