Exactly! These people need to have worked in tech support to understand how clueless endusers are with computers (they have every right to be, just don't ask me for help.) Most of the troubleshooting at my job consists of having the customer open up a command prompt and typing a few commands (Can't ping the gateway [router IP] and I can? Great! Call your consultant and have a nice day) Linux wouldn't be much different.

Though I do not see linux ready for the desktop. Not because endusers will be confused, they already are in Windows, but due to the fact everything automagically works (sometimes) and there is a lot of driver support. Linux (KDE & Gnome specifically) does not seem that stable, but the difference is, it can be. With Windows you have to rely on Microsoft's false promises that "this next version is gonna be stable, I swear!"

Although I do see Linux ready for the Workstation. What does work generally consist of? Email, Internet, word processing, spreadsheets, etc. I've seen Linux do this as I'm sitting here on my Debian unstable box. For most jobs, having the latest support for your uber 1337 digital camera is not necessary. And it isn't the job of the secretary to fix her computer, she will most likely mess it up even more. It's the job of helpdesk, and what's wrong with ssh'ing or vnc'ing into a linux box to fix an issue? I think this is more of a pro than a con.

  9. Re:My own experience from No Windows to XP... on Linux Users Try FreeBSD 5, Windows · · Score: 1

I admit, Windows appears to be far superior to Linux in ease of use, but look how much longer Windows has had to progress. Quite honestly the only reason I use Windows 2000 is because I'm too lazy. What does my "desktop use" consist of? Kazaa, watching movies, instant messaging, listening to music, and web browsing. All these things I can do with Linux. About a month ago I tried Knoppix and nearly wet my pants, the thing automagically detected everything and even auto assigned my static IP (??!!). I could get online instantly, instant message, watch pr0n, visit slashdot, etc. The only thing I couldn't do is use kazaa, but it seems that BitTorrent is a much better alternative to Kazaa.

Everybody loves the point that Windows "just works". Although I haven't had much experience in XP, this isn't always true. Drivers can be a pain in the ass to install, but this is generally the manufacturer's fault (same argument can be used in Linux) also things "just work" but when they start not working then it can become a pain. Low level stuff in Linux seems a lot easier than in Windows. What about file system degradation? Eventually Windows will bloat and run a lot slower than when you just installed it. When you set up Linux (or FreeBSD which this whole article is about :P) it make take a longer time to get everything working the way you like it, but generally it stays that way. When things do go wrong, it's a lot faster to fix, it may be that I have a greater understanding of how things work or could be that I have the ability to make changes (instead of being restricted to GUI and poor CLI.)

So do I think Linux is dekstop ready? Not a chance, but it?s workstation ready, maybe not so much as transitioning from Windows, but for a startup company, I think Linux is more than ready.

In my ignorant opinion, nuke's disadvantages outweigh the benefits. I'm sorry but in the long term, a nuclear explosion is worse than a natural gas explosion. Think of all the radiation. In addition, what about the costs of transporting it and getting rid of the contents? The "experts" claim it's good enough to bury it underground surrounded by concrete. What if we find out in the future that this is a bad thing? And some the radiation gets into water, air, etc (yea I know it's below the water table but you never know.) I think we should wait instead of just testing it on civilians.

I still believe that wind and solar will be practical and can sustain a lot of our power. We just need to learn how to conserve and invest more into research. Of course there's not really any incentive for this right now.

I'm sure once there's more fuel cell and electric/gas hybrid cars there will be a lot less traffic...

Pollution isn't the only factor, I think the car-only city design leaves a lot to be desired. Suburbia lacks any sort of culture, it just seems like the same 'ol cookie cutter BS, and it makes driving a requirement. To do anything, you need a car (which may be a reason why teenagers are so freggin bored and get in to trouble) Why is this? Because every city is designed for cars, if there is public transportation, it doesn't work because everything is planned so piss poor. This doesn't mean we should cram everyone into high density buildings (this is understandable where land is scare and/or wants to be preserved) It just means we shouldn't have everything in inconvenient places. I don't know how we can solve present design flaws (I'm no engineer) but we should we working on future developments.

Cities around America are going to stay the way they are because people are not willing to give up their 'freedom' of driving. Personally, I see a car as a great recreational vehicle when driving in the hills and whatnot, but I don't see how being stuck in traffic is freedom.

Take in the factor of safety. Not everyone wants to drive and from work. We've all seen the general stupidity of many drivers, I know when I drive sometimes I make stupid mistakes but generally the case is that either I'm A) tired or B) stressed. I sure as hell wouldn't mind relaxing on a train to and from work, where I don't have to worry about getting myself or someone else killed. I work my ass off at my current place of employment why the hell do I have waste more resources on a commute?

So don't just think this is a pollution-only issue. Greens may think of the environment over anything else, but our car culture is more than just a pollution problem, it's a health and social problem.
