Seriously, is there any point to screen shots? I mean, I can customize any WM or DE through themes to look like that. I guess we are looking for consistency, but I can't tell because it doesn't have any third party apps open.
I distrust companies when they cause actual damage to you computer. Service Packs should be tested because, after all, they're supposed to fix bugs. Not introduce new ones. This is one of the reason that make Microsoft untrustworthy.
Of course Linux is not immune to this. I was angry with the whole 2.4.9 - 10 ordeal where the "stable" kernel release had some serious issues. People on slashdot claim, "oh you shouldn't download the latest and greatest" and "only compile kernels that end in even numbers like.2!" This is stupid, especially when a ptrace exploit comes out and people say "you gotta update the kernel!" I don't know what to do, except stick with the true stable kernel...2.2:P
I don't get it, why do people use Windows XP? What does it have over Windows 2000? Most people I know are annoyed by all the messages, product activation BS, etc and they still use Windows XP. As far as I know, Windows 2000 is NT 5.0 and XP is NT 5.1, and the compatibilities between the two are the same.
I believe the noise factor of the supersonic Concorde played a huge part in the failure of it. I believe too many people complained of the sonic boom it would create over rural areas so the routes were limited to trans-atlantic flights.
Isn't that why Nikes are so much cheaper now than if they were made in the United States?
Cheaper prices don't come just from cheaper labor, it also comes from supply and demand. I'm stating the obvious, but supply is high for tech jobs and demand is low; therefore tech workers are a cheap commodity. Corporations just view us as machines that can be easily replaced. This is the way it has always been and will always be (so this is capitalism?)
I hope you enjoy the rest of your life in the cube farms wage slave.
I hate all this talk about how alternative energy is not "cost effective". Sure, the direct costs may seem more, but what about indirect costs? Let's say ohhh sending our military out to the Middle East to protect our oil suppliers, or perhaps a war that will end in a lot of innocent lives being killed. How much is a human life worth? $1.49/gallon?
Renewable energy sources will never be seriously considered in the United States because businessmen here are smart. They know people will no longer have a permanent dependence on their products. Just look at Microsoft, they wouldn't survive if they made a product that didn't crash and was full of bugs.
Actually, Linux was affected by the Slapper worm. I think you meant Slammer, which is a common mistake since they sound so similar...sorry for being such a nazi:P
I honestly think it's dumb to require people having certification. If I'm a Computer Technician that 20 years experienced and now I'm forced to get certification to "prove myself" by the gubmit I would be pissed. It's totally unnecessary.
Serious, car mechanics usually get customers through reputation, not some ASE sign. Same with Computer Repair Technicians, I would rather have my computer fixed by someone that has 20+ years experience with no certifications than some dope with an MCSE or A+. If a customer is not satisfied with your work, he'd be smart to not come back to you. If you want to find a reputable company start a site like epinions.com
I don't see computers as a serious health risk, I mean there's a chance that an AMD processor might start smoking, but I don't see how a computer can kill you.
This whole regulation is pointless, it would just be another excuse for the government to unnecessarily intervene with business (and this is coming from a socialist.)
but just because they 'speak' English doesn't mean you understand what they are saying. My mom is a Dutch immigrant and nobody can understand what she's saying (except for me.) Same with people from India, their English is very very very hard to understand, it's very fast, compared to the typical slowness of Americans.
Of course, English is a pretty hard language in general, I don't blame the immigrants, I blame the corporations that want to exploit them and American workers at the same time. The whole H1-B program is not about "not enough supply," they used the argument during the boom times, but it's no longer valid since there's plenty of talent in IT that are not currently employed. It's really about inflating stock prices as it cuts labor costs.
If this is the nature of Capitalism, then I'm proud to say that I'm neither a Capitalist nor do I support Capitalism.
I disagree, as long as you're paying attention to two things at the same time, you're still at a greater risk of an accident. Maybe it's just me, but I can't multi-task when I'm driving. Then again, I'm the only American that drives a stick.
Wow! Have you ever considered writing textbooks for Arkansas Public Schools?
Only kidding, I'm half Dutch and I have terrible grammar. Of course, I've lived in the US all my life and I don't speak a word of Dutch...I guess I'm just stupid.
Sweet, I like the old BMWs. My friend has an old BMW Bavarian which is in pretty crappy condition but I can't wait to check it out when it's fully restored.
I'm not into raw performance. I just like the style of old mopars, they're fast enough but at the same time they're big enough to feel comfortable in (even sleep:P) I know they aren't the best at handling, but you shouldn't limit yourself to one kind of car.
Personally, I love old cars myself. I've always wanted a mopar, or one of those old Chrysler Hemis. I also like Darts with Slant Sixes, those things would last forever! They sure as hell don't make em like they used to.
Of course I'm currently settling with a 1980 Volvo that's in better condition than most 'new' cars. Not a bad car at 18, but maybe when I'm bored and 30 I'll soup up a Barracuda or Galaxie 500.

Most DSL providers provide you with consumer grade crap. Why? Because it is profitable. Joe Sixpack just wants to download pr0n a little faster. While most geeks want real DSL.
The DSL most ma bells provide are PPPoE shit. You have to use their crappy software and their connections often go down. I never even got my DSL synced through PacHell and whenever I contacted tech support they would walk me through the software settings which I knew were correct, I just wanted them to sync my damn connection.
Don't think Cable is immune to headaches. AT&T broadband wont let you run your own servers. There's other BS rules out there too.
I got DSL through the company I work for. It's pretty damn good and I'm not trying to advertise this either (I work in tech support, I don't want anymore customers:P) Basically their policy is that they will sync you with whatever is physically possible. Luckily I got 2.4mbit for the same flat rate, of course some of our customers are synced up at 6-8mbit. We are more centered around business which generally make more money and you get all the perks like 30 email accounts, web hosting, 5 static IPs, DSL router (that is truly "always-on"), etc. It's $89/month but it's a lot better than that PPPoE shit. I just think these companies should advertise more and advertise intelligently. None of our marketing tells customer that it isn't PPPoE, and we allow you to do whatever you want with your connection (as long as you don't spam.)
Plain and simple, there should be more Geek-centric DSL that appeals to us geeks. Of course I'm never going to cable since I don't have Cable TV and I haven't had good experience with it. I guess it's all based on experiences and not really the technology.
Hell, we didn't even have (or going to have) a Christmas Party. How bout a bonus? Nope, I'm a temp worker so yay for me! Oh yea, I don't even get holiday pay. I just looove Christmas, more traffic, more annoying people, and more angry people on the phone.
You'd fail history if you wrote that the only reason the South went to war was because of slavery.
The South felt that they were poorly represented, The North had a stronger economy, and many of the tariffs imposed at the Federal level, hurt the South.
I'm sympathizing with the South, just making it clear that slavery wasn't the ONLY reason the South seceded from the Union. After all, the North had their own slaves, they were "Wage Slaves."
It came from a Family Guy episode where Peter gets a new car and it has a GPS system that gives directions in different languages and when it comes to 'Russian' the translator goes "There is a fork in the road" "or in SOVIET RUSSIA, road forks you." I don't know if that was the exact quotes, but a funny as hell episode nonetheless. *Sigh* I miss that show.
I think it was in the episode "There's Something About Paulie" but I could be wrong.
I'm just wondering, among high school students who view this web page, how many of you have students administrate the computer network?
I found this amazing when my friend in LA said she helped administrate their network. At my old high school there was only one administrator there, and she had to administrate the whole network. (She also statically assigned every computer an IP address!) I think it would be great to have students do this because it will cut down costs and actually teach these kids some important stuff.
As for moving school networks to Linux, I think it will not only make it cheaper for the district, but it will be a powerful education tool if they allow the students administrate it.
Holy shit, it's windows 3.12!
Seriously, is there any point to screen shots? I mean, I can customize any WM or DE through themes to look like that. I guess we are looking for consistency, but I can't tell because it doesn't have any third party apps open.
Yes, typing apt-get update then apt-get upgrade causes me to bang my head against the keyboard and foam out the mouth.
I distrust companies when they cause actual damage to you computer. Service Packs should be tested because, after all, they're supposed to fix bugs. Not introduce new ones. This is one of the reason that make Microsoft untrustworthy.

Is there are specific reason why they wont just give direct access to the patches on their site?
And as the old saying goes, "It's not what you know, it's who you know."
I believe the noise factor of the supersonic Concorde played a huge part in the failure of it. I believe too many people complained of the sonic boom it would create over rural areas so the routes were limited to trans-atlantic flights.

My 1980 Volvo has fuel injection, though it seems that Chevy used fuel injection starting from the 50's also.
