It doesn't matter if they distribute a binary kernel via their FTP site. To keep in accordance with the GPL they must also offer the source code for free on that FTP site.
Personally I tend to agree with Hunt and Thomas's view (which is not completely opposed to Bruce's opinion, btw) and I also agree with their viewpoint that protectionist policies like H1B quotas and tariffs won't work to change anything for the better. So what do you think?
Who really cares what you think michael? The editor comments really need to stop. They are getting downright annoying.
The best scenario for AOL is to kill off Netscape and fund Mozilla. AOL in return could add the Firebird to their clients for free. No one ever used Netscape, AOL needs an internet browser (and not MS IE), and the community supports Mozilla. Seems perfect to me.
But I also have a job, two kids, a wife who likes the wild monkey sex at times - and every so often, I have to travel.
Why does this geek feel the need to differentiate himself? Some of us are looking for girlfriends in general. This guy has to tell us about his sexual escapades... I wonder if he works for SCO.
Currently Microsoft is selling the X-Box for a huge loss. Are you willing to pay enough to make that loss a profit? If Linux users would be willing to pay $100 for a Linux loader Microsoft might do it.
Unfortunately, most modders are just looking to get a Linux box cheap. That Linux loader might become the most pirated copy of software ever. And where does that leave Microsoft? Footing the bill for a huge loss on the X-Box.
Here are a couple of the more amusing fixes for the time constrained (read: lazy).
- DHCP Service Uses a Default TTL Value of 900 Seconds
- Unexpected Delay When You Log Off
- Spooler CPU Usage Remains Above 50 Percent If an LPR Port Has a DNS Name That Is Not Valid for the LPD Server
- First Character of Each Line Is Missing When You Print with the Generic Printer Driver
- Computer Displays a Blank Screen When You Resume from an S1 or S3 Power State After You Remove an IEEE 1394 Storage Device
- Windows Critical Update Notification 3.0 May Cause a "Dirty" Shutdown
- A Laptop Computer Has No IP Address After Hibernating
- The "Look In" and "Save As" Boxes in Common Dialog Boxes Are Slow
- The "Eject PC" Command May Not Work Intermittently
- The Computer Hangs If You Call LockWorkstation() While a Screen Saver Is Running
- Performance of Microsoft Commerce Server-based Programs May Degrade Over Time Gee, what a suprise...
- Paged Pool Memory Decreases as You Add RAM
- Multimedia Device Does Not Work After You Update Its Driver
- File Server Stops Responding (Hangs) When You Rename a File
- No Audio on a Web Camera When You Resume from Hibernation
- Computer with Multiple Processors and an AGP Video Adapter Hangs During Startup
- Disk Performance May Degrade Over Time It does?
I think we can all say that Java is rampant on the Internet. For instance, most online gambling sites use Java user interfaces. The average Joe six pack thinks he got the shaft from his computer company when IE displays a broken icon when he tries to view Java content.
Companies such as Dell are bundling Java so their customers won't think they have broken computers.

IBM and Sun would both rather you work with value added resellers. They prefer this model because it keeps their service costs lower and offers you the best service possible through your small to medium sized VARs. You also won't save any money going direct from the manafacturer either.
I would love to see ATI deliver a new driver highly optimized for 3DMark. The driver is to be so optimized you can hardly tell which 3DMark benchmarkinging algorithm is running; producing excellent frame rates at the expense of horrid image quality.
Then 3DMark will turn into a driver game for graphics card vendors. In the end no one wins, ATI and Nvidia and playing games, gamers don't have a good benchmark, and Futuremark's future dwindles.
You will see a lot of people try the computer majors at a college. Quite a few of them are interested in the quick buck and a lot of them are just lame gamers who think computer science is a perfect major for them.
At my school (WIT in Boston) the equalizer is Computer Programming I using C. The college likes to hit kids with this course early in your freshman year. If you don't pass you're simply not cut out for computer science or engineering.

"But it has more bits", says my friend as the reason his Play Station 2 is better than my PC graphics. He doesn't understand that my computer, a 32 bit instrument, actually has a 128 bit graphics card. He also doesn't understand the purpose for all those bits. He just thinks the more of those bits you have the better.
Intel may do better in the benchmarks; however, AMD will offer you a "64 bit computer with a SPECIAL 64 bit version of Windows." When the average user goes to buy a computer they don't check benchmarks. The key to selling these new units will be the more stuff appeal (and the better price of AMD). I want the computer with more bits, don't you:o)

Does this mean when you use fork() you must define a variable as global? I didn't think it was possible to declare a variable as global other than a "$var = 0". Also, does any one know if after forking how would a child return a variable to the parent?

An industry standard benchmark (SPEC CPU benchmark for example) will be used. This of course has problems because a lot factors into the speed of a computer. For instance motherboard chipsets will become increasingly important.
Because all motherboards have a direct link to 120V 60hz AC Power...
Your computer knows what time it is because of the real time clock which is a component of the motherboard. It runs when the PC is off by getting it's power from the small watch battery.
10.6 gigabits is the expected evolution in networking technology. Take a look at the engineers' picture; How about an evelution in fashion and not wearing socks with sandals. That would be impressive.
Everyone is talking about the EULA. Why don't we stop and think here. What actually has the EULA: the hardware or the software? It seems to me that you can't throw a license on something you BOUGHT (hardware). The EULA should really be meant for software. The parallels you can make to the music industry issue are uncanny.

Dick immediately goes about licking the company into shape, with disastrous and frequently hilarious results.
I can't believe the Slashdot editors would allow a sentance like this to slip by.
Good point, it's still annoying though.
