People who dont live in a democracy often seem to wish they do. How many people living in a democracy wish they were living in a dictatorship?
Also, if people living under a democracy want to do things for the common good, they would. Manifestly they dont - they want to look out for themselves. Imposing a dictatorship on such people will hardly make them happier.
>I'm clear that when I copy music, I am doing something that is both legally and _morally_ wrong.
I just made a compilation cd of classical music for a friend. She wont have heard most of it before. When she gets it, she may well discover she likes some of it, and may buy some cds - Bachs `Art of Fugue` for example. I promise you there is practically no chance she`ll ever buy that until she hears my cd - why should she? Where will she here it being played? National radio?
One new person gets to hear Bach. One new person may buy a bach cd, or 2 or 3. Remind me why that is immoral again.
Lets hope theres an animated version of Life (or Work) is hell! The Simpsons was ok while it lasted, but its getting a little long in the tooth. Futurama didnt do it for me. Lets hope something new is just around the corner.
I just looked on the net and it appears to be a book from around 1911. Its available online, but it has nothing to do with computers.
I do seem to remember something with a similar title, and which was computer related, but i cant remember how funny that was either.
I dont want to sound like a grumpy old man, but i really like comedy, and i`ve looked for funny stuff, but its all of similar quality to those tedious `10 reasons why the internet is better than a woman` type emails which less (computer?) literate people persist in emailing me at least once a month.
I cant read the post you are replying to (i browse at 0 or 1 generally) but whenever i think of jumped up sys-admins i also think of the fat, lonely, sad comic book guy from the Simpsons. Read a BOFH using his voice and you may see what i mean.
Personally i find BOFH about as funny as Dilbert or User Friendly - ie not very. I dont think i`ve ever read any genuinely funny computer related humour - for some reason professional comedians dont go near it. I wonder why that is?
"The internet in no way affects your quality of life"
Wrong. It improves it (ease of ordering stuff online, cheap products through eBay, wealth of free news/information etc). Bit of a leap from `not a basic right` to `doesnt affect your quality of life`.
Dunno, but i`d be careful with hi-tech stuff in Germany - some guy got kicked to death there recently because his mobile phone ring tone anoyed someone. On the other hand, i can quite sympathize with his attacker...
Why? Who gives a shit? Its free, and i can use it from work or from home. What have protocols got to do with anything? I have a work email address, but i`m pretty sure if i post to public forums using it i`d get a bunch of emails from the lonely.
Except you`ll probably find it wont work that way. If you have a Yahoo account, they helpfully put a lot of spam into the `bulk mail` folder, but there is nothing in the email headers to identify it as such, so you have to manually click on `empty bulk mail` every time you log on. I dont think they`ll add a `empty trused spam` button, do you? Will be interesting to see if Hotmails `exclusive` mode will still work on this sort of email.
They are all just pulp fiction. I cant believe people take it so seriously! I can imagine people over 30 who saw it the first time around may have some sort of emotional attachment...or a highly developed sense of irony, but the idea that intelligent, grown men are going to queue up and pay good money to see `star wars 5 - attack of the clones` is a little disturbing.
"Games which require DirectX will usually install it during the installation. The process is nearly automatic, so it falls under the category of "I don't need to do anything, why should I care?"."
I care because i use my PC to make music. I`m not going to install DX version n just because its new and its out there. I`ve spent a lot of time and heartache getting my machine halfway stable and usable, so you`ll forgive me if i dont yank the carpet out from under it just to get `Generic first person shooter #192842` working.
"I drive a pickup truck rather than a car because I don't like how sports cars made later will be faster".
No, because if a car is compatible with the road now, it will always be. Your analogy would have to include the road surface changing a little each day, so that at the end of a year or 2, you`ll find less places you can drive, unless you buy a new car which can handle the new road surface.
Its 2d only for me on the pc. I have a psx1 and a GBA and that`ll do nicely. I simply cannot be arsed having to get a new version of directx or drivers for my 3d card, or spend twice the price of a PSX2 (or GBA and about 6 full price games) just for a 3d card which will be shite in about 9 months time. Who can be bothered. Its not like the games are worth it anyway. GBA is great for fun, 2d games that dont have anything to prove. PSX1 is great for squillions of cheap, fun games. PSX2 will be sensibly priced later this year. Who needs the stress of a PC involved in gaming - its bad enough trying to use them to get work done.

Right. `Hey, buy this game. We did. Please buy it? Or we`re stuck with 5,000 games at £35 each`
The defining characteristic of a joke is that it is funny, not just incorrect.
With that knowledge under your belt, it should be easy to see where the confusion came from.
dont get the usual duplicate post from Timothy, we should be ok... ;)

But i still feel cheated, because i want more.

What has slashdot got to do with either Dibert or User Friendly?

I think you`ll find that that is exactly what Slashdot is.
>And what the hell's wrong with that?
Due process?

it doesnt matter - its an old joke we`ve all heard many, many times.... (there was even a song about it by Aphex Twin about 10 years ago)
You`d think that were obvious! For a moment there i`d thought renegade Pedants Anonymous members had hacked the SlashDot database :)
`return of the jedi`?

I thought Windows was a multitasking operating system! Now you are saying i need a different PC for each task? Amazing!
What does `what Israel has done or is doing to other races` have to do with whether or not Switzerland was neutral? Some sort of quantum entanglement?

Excuse me? I thought that particular canard was debunked many years ago!
