  2. Re:"Sharing" of information on Freenet Music Venture; Napster-like ROM Swapping · · Score: 2

I recently got a job at a big technology retailerand one of the questions on the "exam" they give is if you have pirated software or music. I had to put yes. I can just see it in twenty years when people in this generation become politicians and are asked "Have you ever used Napster?" The Bill Clinton of 2020 will have to say "I used it but I didn't download."

  3. international napster? on Napster Shut Down Until Trial · · Score: 2

What if someone were to just setup a napster server outside of the United States? opennap seems to allow anybody to do this. What about that island near England that's supposed to be a haven to that sort of stuff? I can see it now: Saddam is no longer the ememy! It's those HACKERS that pirate the music. Everybody invade Sealand! It will start World War III. The slashdot article is located here

one of the most annoying things is when people become ghosts in Quake 3 Arena. Somehow by overrunning the buffer, they can make it so they can't be touched. I will usually leave a server as soon as I see one. this is why I will be buying Unreal. (I only play Q3 demo).

  5. This is a a Future Shock on Open Media: Taking Old Fartism Down · · Score: 1

I recently did an oral book report on the book "Future Shock" by Alvin Toffler, so I am very familiar with it. This is exactly what he is talking about and he wrote it in 1970! He says that people will experience a "future shock" which is analogous to a "culture shock". Those who do not adapt will be left behind. Here are the links at amazon, Borders, and BN

  7. it's all a hoax on Possible Pics Of The New Apple Mouse · · Score: 1
I bet the new mouse will be completely different from these pictures. There definately will be a new mouse because people have been complaining about them since they came out. Apple knows that people want a new mouse. Frankly I replaced my puck with a kensington. Somebody in Apple obviously has a sense of humor. Apple knows about the rumor sites. I bet they seeded the pics. Also remember that Appleinsider is being sued for posting screenshots from a prebeta of Adobe PS. The reason these are obviously fake is because the pictures would have been pulled already by Apple if they were anything like the real thing. Apple would never create a mouse that was only for righties, too. While I agree that the engineers at Apple were drunk when they thought up the idea for that mouse and keyboard, they aren't that crazy.

Another thing: they better offer these mice really cheap to existing imac/g4/blue g3 users. Steve Jobs is a genius. He bundles awful, cheap mice and keyboards, with about two million computers, knowing full well that everyone will hate them. Then, knowing that they will not give Apple money again for a while, makes them buy new mice from him.

Anyone agree with any of this or am I a raving lunatic?

  9. yahoo is a lot like this on ICQ Banishes Children Under 13 · · Score: 1
Yahoo.com did something very similar to this. My brother (who is 12) signed up for a yahoo account a long time ago and when he tried to go on recently, it said that he would need a parent to give permission for him to use the service. Well I have a yahoo account from a while back as well (I don't use it actively though)

Now I am 17 and since i really didn't care, I think, when I signed up for it, I stupidly put my real age (I'll never do that again!) It said that since I was under 18, I could not authorize somebody. So I signed up for another address and put that I was 25 and tried to authorize him. Since he wanted that username, we couldn't just sign up for a new account. Yahoo actually said "prove it!".

They said that I would need to provide them with a credit card number for them to know for sure if I was an adult! This really made me angry. They also said they would charge it a small amount and then credit it. This was absolutely rediculous. I wasn't going to give up a credit card number to total strangers (even if it is a wellknown company like Yahoo.)

The solution? My brother now has a hotmail account. (I don't want any flames about Microsoft hotmail. I used a hotmail account even before I had a real POP account and though sometimes it's down, it is ok)

  22. state of mozilla on Mozilla: News from the front · · Score: 2
The releases of Mozilla for Macintosh have been quite awful. I know these are only prerelease version but it has a long way to go before it even reaches beta-level. The prerelease version took about 5 minutes to launch and then almost immediately quit it self. (Most likely because it was loading the approx. 300 bookmarks I have.) My browser is of choice now is iCab and for pages that absolutley need some sort of javascript. They both have horrible javascript support but they are relatively fast compared to the hulk of Comunicator and the supposedly rewritten Mozilla.

Another thing is that the package is made up of thousands of little files. Whatever happened to the convention that an application is made up of one application and maybe a shared library or data file. I have never seen an application with so many separate data files. Have they ever heard of a resource fork?!

p.s. I would run linux but my mac is one of the few that has unsupported hardware. I do have a pc sitting next to me with the case open that will run linux as soon as I can get a cd drive for it and a bugger hd.
