That's mostly true, except I'm pretty certain Saudi Arabia is lying about their proven oil reserves. There's a lot of articles on this. Venezuela I don't think is lying, but I also don't think the government can continue to extract and sell oil as the country is currently collapsing into chaos.
I suppose it depends on your definition of "superpower." From the wikipedia article, Canada's GDP is 10th in the world, and 15th per capita (nominal). It's a first world nation with a very high HDI. It's also a member of the G7 nations, which represent 64% of the world's wealth.
I think one thing people overlook is that Canada has a massive treasure trove of natural resources and a very good setup for a modern economy (good income equality, good infrastructure). This combined with a high rate of immigration means the population is growing and companies will flourish (ideally). But, you never know. Resources are 20% of the GDP of Canada (http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/publications/key-facts/16013) so if that all went away at once it'd be a huge problem. I doubt it would go down like that though.
You talk about geo-engineering like we *haven't* already been doing it for a hundred years. Climate change itself is geo-engineering, by humans. It wasn't intentional, but it happened.
It is certainly do-able, and there are many ways to approach it. It doesn't have to be a sci-fi CO2 sucking machine that flies in the clouds.
I live in Canada, and the weather has indeed been getting better for me. As far as I'm concerned, we've terraformed the earth to make it more habitable here and I'm not really upset by it at all.
I'll tell you why it's not ready, from my own personal experience these 4 points sum up the issues:
1. Don't ask me to format and re-install when I want to "upgrade." I ran into exactly that with Linux Mint. Every other OS I use (OSX, Windows) can just upgrade on the spot between major versions.
2. Make suspend / resume work for laptops. Every laptop I've tried, it has not worked (I've tried 3).
3. Support that same hardware as Windows. This is tough from a technical point of view (there's so much), but when your specific network card isn't supported and you need to find a different one and then modify it slightly and rebuild the kernel, you've lost. This is the most common thing I hear from my friends who have tried Linux (in the past 2 years), and happened to myself as well. I documented my experience and linked it twice on Slashdot, I'm not going to bother linking it again.
4. Support UEFI properly. In all cases I installed Linux in a dual boot scenario on a machine with UEFI, it took a lot of messing around in the command line to make things work properly. Why?
Reddit has also been censoring posts lately by removing them from various subreddits without explanation. Typically these are posts which go against it's leftist liberal views. One of the biggest examples was the Cologne sexual assaults, which were continuously removed over a 3-day period until finally being permitted. A more recent example can be seen here: https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/4ctuew/found_this_on_rwtf/
This post refers to another post which contained a video showing a black woman assaulting a white man because he has dread locks. This post was immediately removed from/r/videos,/r/politics, and/r/wtf with no reason given several times (posted by several users). The removed post can be still be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/4cswsg/white_guys_cant_have_dreadlocks/
The worst part is you can't even link to the removed post on reddit, as it will automatically be removed as well. It appears this was easily circumvented by using a shortlink, however.
I'm sorry but I call BS. I have a Wii U, and I have a PS4. I can't comment about the xbox one (I only have a 360), but between the Wii U and the PS4, there's no question: the PS4 is *way* smoother both for getting into the app (it auto re-starts from standby mode and even keeps your spot), and the actual playing itself.
So I don't know how you came to this conclusion, but I definitely disagree from my own experience.
I'm sure the Chinese say the same about western media. When we do something on Mars, it's all "don't forget, these are the same guys that say Snowden is a criminal and that they invaded Iraq to help them, not for oil."
We talk about bias on Slashdot a lot, yet we all blatantly use it against foreign nations (often rightly so) while always trusting our own scientific break-throughs (even if they are indeed more trustworthy).
The fine brothers were losing like 200k subscribers a day over this, it was very unpopular. It appears they are rescinding their attempt: their post about it
Submitter here. The summary isn't even the article I submitted. Here is my submission: submission. And here is the actual article I linked as the main article main article.
The title there is "Oceans running out of fish as undeclared catches add a third to official figures."
Wait, did the steering wheel lock because the ignition was off, or did the power steering just stop operating? Because if you're still travelling at 60mph, it's really not hard to turn the wheel even with no power steering.
I've driven many cars with no power steering (antiques, and also a 1986 Fiero), and when you're at a stop it's impossible to turn, but if you're moving it's really not that hard.
It's true the lack of Slashdot UTF support is incredibly annoying, but there is a preview button on posts. You're even forced to click it before submitting.
With shipping, it's $914 for Canadians. LOL. Nobody is going to pay that, that's ridiculous. The worst part is that by doing this, a lot of people who were hard-core VR supporters are turning their back, which in turns hurts the developers and the technology.

"Amazing: Frankly, I think you should just work at Tesla,” Musk wrote to Hotz in an e-mail. “I’m happy to work out a multimillion-dollar bonus with a longer time horizon that pays out as soon as we discontinue Mobileye.”
“I appreciate the offer,” Hotz replied, “but like I’ve said, I’m not looking for a job. I’ll ping you when I crush Mobileye.”
I agree about the oil part. But, instead of investing all that money into the military to try and combat the situation, why not just invest it into alternative energy (better batteries, solar, fusion, etc.) to get off oil instead of fighting to keep it? That's what I don't get.
Subsidize every home to have solar panels and subsidize electric cars (something much cheaper than a Tesla) for each house. Problem fucking solved.
This story is misleading, Samsung has been making cars for years for Korea only. Anybody who's been to Korea has seen them they're everywhere. They aren't entering the market.
Those courses sound good, so why aren't they mandatory to get a gun?
In Canada, we have mandatory courses to get a gun license (1 day for a rifle, 2 for a pistol). I think part of the issue in the US isn't that you can get a gun, it's how easy you can get it with no training.
Which country are you referring to? Usually the UK is the 5th nation on the GDP list, so it can't be that one.

Says the AC...
Mine hasn't been working for a month. I sent an e-mail to Slashdot about it, got a canned response, and since then it's disappeared entirely.
I guess it's "fixed" since I now have no expectation for it to work anymore since it's gone...
Did anyone else notice the checkbox to disable ads for high karma users is now gone on Slashdot?
It stopped working a few weeks ago, and now it's just gone altogether.

No problem, credit due where it's deserved. I also posted a submission follow-up on that oil scandal from Wed (https://slashdot.org/submission/5731939/monaco-based-oil-company-unaoil-raided-by-police). I really like that Slashdot is the only news agency in North America that is reporting on this.
Glad to see you're actually doing to Slashdot what needs to be done. So far I've liked the changes.

The link in the summary is to the login of the paywall, which makes no sense. The actual link should be: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/18/technology/apple-encryption-engineers-if-ordered-to-unlock-iphone-might-resist.html.
Not that anyone reads TFA...

For the record, all 3 links open just fine. Not sure what the issue you had was.

Musk simply answered, “OK.”
