Dude, that's pure BS, today probably less than 1% of cars run Waze and yet it helps tremendously with traffic recognition, to the point that Google bought them primarily to feed better traffic info into maps. If you figure the average age of the US vehicle fleet is 11.4 years that means you turn over ~4% of the fleet each year resulting in a huge network effect year one and a stupid high effect by year 5.

I'm not seeing anything about the alerts being via satellite other than the fact that CAP alerts go out to the stations via PRSS, the end devices only receive the alert from the digital subchannel from the participating stations. As to the cell network being overloaded, EWS messages go out as broadcast SMS messages which means if your cellphone is on it will receive the message, data and voice channels being overloaded won't stop your phone from receiving SMS.

Meh, the problem is also solved via the EWS warnings going out via cellular towers, most folks today carry a cellphone and all new ones have to have EWS alerts available. (though I do have a problem with the EWS targeting, they know which tower and concentrator you are talking to, why do they give tornado warnings for the other side of the state?). In an emergency it's a lot more likely your cellphone will work than your tv (and solar chargers that will power your cellphone are small and inexpensive, though the fuel for the tower probably becomes a problem first).

Well duh, average home prices can't exceed levels where mortgage payments exceed ~33% of after tax median income for any significant amount of time because that's what people can actually afford to pay for housing without incurring significant debt in other areas which will eventually lead to default. That's why people cheering about home prices rebounding puzzle me, I figured the best thing that could happen to the housing market would be a decade of price stagnation allowing inflation to bring average prices back to more normal and sustainable levels without putting more people under water.

Seriously, most of the time even upgrading the java server to a newer subrelease will break things for any non-trivial application which is why you have very specific requirements in the support matrix.

Due to the copyleft license any changes these platform developers make to gcc and distribute to users have to be released back to the community so open source systems can easily be ported to the platform. If you let them just take the compiler work and make their own proprietary compiler that platform may never be able to be supported by open systems.

Comcast for all their faults actually had the proper solution for this problem, as a node becomes congested they look at the top few percent of users and throttle their connection, if the top few percent doesn't alleviate the congestion they move on to the next few percent, etc. Once they reach ~10% of users being throttled they upgrade the backhaul for the node or split the node depending on where the congestion is. None of the shenanigans with monthly download limits or metered billing, attack the actual problem. Unfortunately they later added on a monthly download limit (though at 250GB it is pretty generous compared to their peers). Comcast even published their system as rfc6057.
