"Evergreening" This is a process where pharma companies make teeny weeny changes to compound and get a new patent, bypassing the 20 year limit on patents. Indian law(thankfully) does not allow "Evergreening". Patents cannot be issued on "new versions" or "slight changes". The courts are very sensitive to this, and will not allow pharma companies to get away. What this ruling has done is that many more common drugs can now be sold as generics. Cancer is a relatively rare disorder, but there are other more common diseases where patented drugs are very expensive. With this ruling generics will get a big boost. Not only that, there is a push by the govt to prevent doctors from recommending "brands" and recommend generic brand name drugs which are 1/10 the cost, or even cheaper. There has been lot of pressure by the WTO to allow corporate to plunder the masses, but the govt has held out on its own. There are many things wrong with India. Thankfully. patent system as it stands today is not one of the things wrong!
Whenever google is criticized for yanking a "free" service, such comments come up. but is anything from google free? Sure its may not ask for money, but in google your eyeball is the product, and they make money from ads. Lets take gmail. Now its free. If google yanks it, many people will troll "it was free" "ask for a refund". But when I open gmail, I see ads. So in a way google is making money. No company is in it for charity.; And no company is above criticism. There is nothing wrong to feel bad or criticize the company if it cans a product you were dependent upon. "Ask for a refund" what kind of response is that. And just because its pro google, it gets modded to "insightful"!
Sensitivity and dynamic range are separate things. You can have an extremely sensitive sensor, pushing an equiv of ISO 12800 or even more, but dynamic range may only be 8-10EV Even the best of the best have around 13EV of dynamic range(eg Nikon D7000) at ISO 100. As you increase ISO, the dynamic range suffers, and noise increases. Getting to above 14-15EV is very very difficult. You can do it in post processing(HDR combination of multiple exposures)
That people are commenting on firefox 19. Since this is slashdot, I kind of expected everybody to be on firefox 20+ (Aurora channel) or atleast the Beta channel. However, this does not appear to be the case. Since I have always been on Aurora channel, let me tell you, this PDF viewer does not impact performance at all. As for print to PDF, on windows you need cutepdf writer sort of software. Linux you can print to file(PDF) no issues. Or if you want, you can print to ps. That said, Firefox 20+ is significantly faster than 19. I don't know what they did in 20, but when Aurora went over to 20+, the speed was like at par with chrome. I have stopped using chrome now, and use it very rarely. BTW I am on 20.0a2 (2013-01-18)
OSM is now growing. There is tonnes of mapping data available, How about improving offline navigation capabilities. For example, currently OSM AND simply does offline navigation based on POIs. How about integrating an offline address search.
You are running something like google maps app which required data connection for navigation. There exist many free OSM based apps which work without data connection. example OSMAND If you want better routing etc., you can go with sygic app(39 USD), for full featured experience like your in car garmin/tomtom
I could not get your question. Even today, you can use your phones GPS without data connection. Many offline navigation apps exist which do not require data(only one time to download the app and the map for your country) on your phone.
Okay, first you have the eMMc bug in Galaxy note which would result in permanent brick on factory reset and wipe via custom recovery. Then in Note 2 you started giving root to any app which told you to.
And now the notebooks are going bricky brick. Whats with you and the love of bricks?
CDMA network is rare though, India is primarily GSM country. Depending upon whether you want lots of free minutes, you have your "packs" and packages.
Other countries where I have used this is Thailand, where some 200rs equivalent in Indian rupee(4 USD) got me data which was enough for daily skype call for 7 days. Some kind of 15 day unlimited data on GPRS and 3G thing.
As an international traveller, all you need is an unlocked GSM phone. If you need micro sim card, buy a sim card, and cut it yourself with a sim cutter(costs 120 INR(2.2$). Shops will cut it for you for 1$ equivalent.
Why do you assume that it would just last 6 months? They last a good deal longer. 20-30$ a month is small money in a wester country, but in developing countries, its a lot more.
Let me tell you the India story. A few years back, when the telecom boom happened, you needed to buy your own phone. Even today very few carriers offer bundles So you could either spend 150$ approx to buy a nokia feature phone(entry level), or some 300$ to get a more advanced feature phone, and about 600$ to buy a newish smartphone.
Or you could buy a chinese feature phone with no name brand for 100$ which used ot do some web browsing and stuff. As the advanced smartphones came, LG, samsung etc., found their main market was 10000-15000 INR range. Which is approx 200-300$
The chinese phones were 6000-7000. Then a few companies decided why not get the "better chinese" phones and rebrand them and offer warranty and stuff. So domestic companies like karbonn and Micromax bloomed. Cannot afford that 400$ 1.2GZ dual core with 1GB ram Well there is a dual core with 1GB of ram for 11999 INR (220$) with 1 year warranty. And as anybody who has worked in electronics will tell you, if it lasts a year, it will last a few more.
The US market is pretty new, but once you have a similar specied phone on contract for half the price, people will take it, because after a year they usually trade in their phones for a newer model.
Another point to note here is that these phones are not junk. If samsung has a 1 in 100 failure rate these guys have around 1 in 60 or 1 in 70. As long as the supplier factors this into the equation and offers customer service, there are not going to be any issues.
Now, whenever any app asks for root permissions, you will be asked whether you want to give root. This is how it used to work in my older rooted devices.
Once upon a time, you expect things to last. Cell phone? Should work for 5 years atleast without hitch. TV - Well 20 years is no big deal Washing machine - 20 years, no big deal
However, the consumerist culture has started to change the psych of the consumers all over the world. "Use and throw" is the buzz word?
Phone : One year later dump your old, get new one on contract at 100$/month or whatever Washing machine : 3 years is great, thats why we give only 3 years warranty Car ? 50,000 miles for a clutch replacement is great
This culture is killing quality manufacturing.
There is no incentive to design and build an automobile which does 500,000 miles without hitch in normal running conditions.
Not possible you say? Look at the 1980s 1990s landcruisers, or the old mercs. They still go on and on.
Old Nokia handsets would last 5-6 years easily, even when subject abuse like water dunking and falls. Today, if you sneeze on your cell phone, it would explode.
A small active antenna can give tremendous improvement over a passive antena. calculate dipole length based on your frequency, and then look up some simple circuits for active antenna., From your post it appeared that you wanted something cheap. 20$ will give you some real good antennas from ebay
Mobiles phones are not banned in India. You can buy cell phones from Amazon if you want, but you have to pay customs and shipping. I find it quite amusing that people are so eager to defend google!
No, there are no restrictions in India. Most Android phones make it here(Samsung,LG,Garmin,Dell.....) But nexus never does. I think they do not want to cannibalize Samsung S series which are the largest selling phones in India in the high end market. So it has nothing to do with law, its just equivalent to using a walled garden.
I am an android user. Used to have a LG-P500, and then got a Galaxy note. My brother owns a Note Tablet(10") I am a big supported of android, but I do not think the platform is really open. For example, I recently bought a camera. I went to the merchant site, got it shipped to somebody in USA, and he will bring it to India. However, if I want to do the same with Nexus 10, I cannot. Google simply says, sorry, devices not enabled in google play in your country.
So I would have to request the person in US to use their credit card to buy, if I want this device. Software openness and app ecosystem is good, but I somehow do not like the way Google is selling this stuff.
Why not let it be like consumer electronics with multiple points of sale. Heck, google could sell it to anybody in the world, with that person bearing shipping charges. I can do that with amazon, why not google
And guess what, rumour has it that these devices won't even be launched in India officially(just like the original Nexus were never launched here).

Nikon D800 has 36 Megapixels packed into a 35mm sensor
This camera has 2.1Mega pixels crammed into the same size sensor.
Make it long enough, and the moon will look like the sun
Here you go, an example shot

For the uninformed, "Potti" means shit in Hindi
To be the perfect AV ......
No internet means
No virus
No Botnet
No Adware
No Spyware
Or maybe the program became self aware and realized that the internet is a disease, a virus, needing to be squashed
