Tommy Lee is loaded, you should be too!

Truer words were never spoken, my friend.

  2. Re:The Last Starfighter on America's Army Comes to the Mac · · Score: 1

Y'know I really think there might be something to that. The whole set up *is* a lot like the Last Starfighter. And I think it's more than a coincidence. After all that movie is what inspired George W. Bush to enter politics. I see larger things at work here.

  3. Re:Who cares? on Why Johnny Can't Handwrite · · Score: 1

Amen. This sort of "problem" is as old as the hills. Well, guess what - it doesn't matter. You don't want language to change? Tough. It will happen. Why don't you try arguing against glaciers instead?
Ever read Beowulf? Does that look like Modern English to you? No? The horror! The language changed! The oceans will not rise and consume the continents*. Life will go on.</assinine rant>

*If they do, it probably won't be because of language change.

Hey, That guy just stole my comment.
But really an iBook with an Airport card is a recipe for success. The aforementioned battery life is excellent. And personal experience has proven to me that a mac is less likely than a PC to implode while you type a paper.

No - I am not Ellen Feiss.

PDAs are pretty tough to take notes on in my experience - plus you'd look like a collosal tool. Pen and paper do just fine for note taking. There's something to be said for actually writing the words and the effect this has on retention.

Excuse me? Vote for a guy who can not understand the bills he is backing? Hell, no! This guy is dangerous, he shouldn't be allowed in Politics!
No. This is a guy that listened to his constituents. And now he's more sensitive to these issues and is less likely to take lobbyists at their word. He'd have my vote in a heartbeat.

So Bezo directed a third of his workforce to pursue just this one goal? Interesting.
I think I speak for all moderators when I say, "Thanks for telling us how to moderate your post."

    Yes, it was a joke.

  7. Benefits ARE being passed on to the consumer on Cheap Audio Production · · Score: 1

Well, sometimes. And the benefits are not necessarily financial. Benefits != Money. Protools lowers the cost of production. This means that records are getting made today that wouldn't have been made in the past. Have taken a look at Indie music lately? It's flourishing and in no small part due to the lowered cost of producing an albumn. Please hold your comments about (intentionally) lo-fi indie stuff.
The consumer benefits from more choice. The consumer gets to pick recordings that were possible with big record labels footing the bill.

Really. If the box still works, why not just take it to Goodwill? That's what I've done and continue to do.

  10. How Big Is It? on New Frozen World Found Beyond Pluto · · Score: 1
    Well, according to the article:
A good idea of the size of the new world can be gained from the fact that if all the 50,000 numbered asteroids were combined, the resulting body would still be smaller than Quaoar.
Um, ok. I don't know about you, but this doesn't tell me squat. It's an interesting tidbit, but the "to get a good idea" part just made me laugh.
  11. Re:i don't get it on Apple Bundles InDesign With Power Macs · · Score: 1
these companies use quark because it is what they are used to. they are just going to switch because apple bundles it with the machine?
Well, no, not for that reason. However, they do seem to be making the switch. You seem to be overestimating the stranglehold that Quark has on the print production world. Yes, for years Quark has been the industry standard and for the time being still is.

However,I know a number of folks who work at ad agencies (my wife for one) and they all seem to being sloooowly adopting InDesign. I'm not entirely sure why, though. I am not a designer, art director, etc. so I can't tell you how good of a program Quark XPress is from that perspective. But as someone who's had to support it for years, I can tell you that it sucks. Adobe tends to be a much nicer company to deal with. Also, Adobe is a well-known and respected name. They make good software (usually). What the hell else does Quark do? And Quark's licensing! Christ.

So will this software bundling push people over to the dark side? No. They were headed there anyway. This will just get them there quicker.

  12. Theories about the origin of language on Mutant Gene Responsible for Speech? · · Score: 1
As a linguistics undergrad the origin of language was a fascinating mystery to me. I've read quite a bit on the subject. Here a tremendous book on the matter:
Grooming, Gossip, and the Evolution of Languageby Robin Dunbar

First of all, in primate society grooming is very important (establishing and maintaining bonds, blah, blah). Dunbar posits that pre-language vocalization was a way to "groom" more individuals at once and to do so at a distance. He pits this theory against other familiar explanations. Namely the "there's-food-down-by-the-water" theory and the "oh-shit-a-bear" theory. After some field research he has determined that the bulk of linguistic interaction is inconsequential chit-chat. This need to maintain a relationship with BS conversation holds true today - think about it. Anybody have a wife/girlfriend. How often do you send an e-mail or give someone call just to say "hi". You're not really exchanging valuable information. You're making an effort to keep whatever connection is there alive.

If you have any interest in the matter, I recommend that you read this book. My explanation doesn't do the author justice. I highly recommend this book to anyone. The style of writing is a pleasantly academic, but still accessible to the uninitiated.
