  1. Really? Thats scary on Texas to Get Broadband Over Power Lines · · Score: 1

So, um, excuse my ignorance - but does this mean that the "infrastructure" is now on the net? Shutting down meters? Checking failures?

    It sure sounds like it.

If true, I give it exactly 30 days before someone has figured out some "fun" things to do with their connection.

  2. Amen on Analog Hole Legislation Formally Introduced · · Score: 2, Interesting

I sell thousands of products from major manufacturers (ABB, Tyco, Flowserve, and others). Every single one of my manufacturer's gets castings and machined parts from China. I deal in heavy industry-type items. Valves, piping, pumps, etc.

The parent post is dead-on. Back in the early to mid-90's, the castings and machining was sub-par out of China. Nowadays, that is NOT the case. The products coming from China are excellent. World-class, in fact. And guess who's jobs those used to be? Yep. Americans.

Apparently, it's a hard sell to say "I am worth $50/hour", when the company can go to China and pay much less -- with the same quality. Go figure.

The only downside is the delivery times. It takes time to get that stuff in from China and as such, the JIT (just in time) model, blows up. But who cares if you can sell it at 40% less than it takes to make it here stateside.

  3. If you are not in IT on Creating an IS Department? · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you are not in the IT business, then your goal as a manager/owner is to minimize your costs (real and "soft") to the absolute lowest point possible that is bearable. If, on the other hand, your business is IT (ie: consulting company or something), then you might put much more into it.

This isn't rocket science. IT, for most companies, is a cost center. Treating it as otherwise is bad for business and will lead you to spend lots of dollars with little return. THIS IS HOW IT HAS BEEN AND HOW IT WILL BE IN THE FUTURE.

There are some large private companies where we have no idea how much cash they have. Koch Industries comes to mind. Cargill too.

Sounds a lot longer than 10 minutes to me.

And honestly, I wasn't going to post this but I felt it needed to be pointed out. I totally understand your point (and agree w/ you, btw) but being alarmist about it isn't going to help. The slammer worm moved fast -- but not nearly as fast as you claim.

  8. I just had this chat on Traditional Radio Endangered By New Tech · · Score: 1

I just had this chat with a friend of mine who is manager of a radio station here in Oklahoma.

He was asking me about the quality of sat. broadcasts and I have to say, I agree with him. The quality of satellite radio is below that of OTA FM. You can and do hear artifacts from time to time.

However, I pointed out that the increase in variety MORE (way more) than makes up for the lack of quality. Simply put: there is no comparison. I've been exposed to music that I would have NEVER EVER been exposed to. And you know what? It made me buy some CD's that I wouldn't have otherwise bought.

I haven't actually tuned in a real FM radio station in about 2 years. Why put myself through the frustration?

How about a topless woman? Seems ok in Europe. Does that have to be in .xxx?
What about medical sites on reproduction?

Obviously, your horse-fscking sites will need to be in .xxx but the obvious ones are the easy part. Figuring out where that "line" is, is the more diffcult part.

All of it. That's what Attorney General's do. Remember, this is a CRIMINAL prosecution. Not a civil prosecution. Anytime you read "Attorney General" of anything, that's a criminal prosecution.

And to the non-US'ers of us, in US courts, there are two types of cases - civil and criminal. Criminal cases can (usually) only be brought by an agent of the government (Atty General, Inspector General, etc). They usually involve fines and/or jail time. Civil cases are cases that are fought between two private parties where the govt is a non-party and you can't go to jail. You can only be penalized financially or through other non-jail means (attend counseling, etc).

In other words: Divorce = civil. Killing your wife = criminal.

Jeez, we even had an office area called "Telecom Corridor" (located in Richardson). It's where all the big telecom companies officed.

If you'd like to prove me wrong, just go down to your local convenience store and try it. I assure you, you will end up in the CRIMINAL justice system. You may only get a ticket (misdemeanor) but on the other hand, you may receive the harshest penalty allowed (jail). We, technies, know that we are living in a superficial "fluff" time. There was a time and place when you had to know your shit in order to talk about a given subject. Those days are long gone. Anyone with an opinion can now speak as a "subject matter expert". You know it. I know it. We see it every single day (especially in IT) at work, on TV, and in society. And it's not discouraged, rather, it's encouraged by our society. He who crafts the best "story" gets the most gold.
