  2. Right and Wrong? on Puncturing the "PCs Are Cheaper Than Macs" Myth · · Score: 2, Interesting

The research on pricing might be right and it might be wrong, but I'm willing to spend the extra money to run Mac OS X (legally) on supported hardware. I prefer not to deal with Linux but I would take it over Windows anyday. Some people don't care or they have applications that require Windows. I can boot into or virtually run Windows, Linux, or MacOS X on my Macbook Pro if I need/want to--and I am happy with the choices I have.

I am also a Final Cut Studio user, so I'm not going to be able to use an El Cheapo PC laptop (I'll have to beef up the HD, the video card, memory, etc. *AND* buy Sony, Adobe, and/or Avid software). That makes buying a PC laptop more expensive--at least as much as a well-equipped Macbook Pro w/ FCS2.

If you're not that picky about the OS or have needs that push the limits, I suppose a $500 laptop from Acer makes you happy. Some people, however, wouldn't or couldn't use that bargain laptop if you gave it to them for free.

It's not about forcing your kids to learn our morality or about over-sheltering them from the world--it's about protecting them before they're developed enough to process and understand "adult" themes, course language, and the materialistic society they will eventually have to learn to navigate for themselves.

Too many parents just use the TV as a babysitter or pacifier before kids are properly equipped to have their own cognitive defenses against the assault of conflicting values and messages. We have chosen to eliminate the trojan horse of that conflict: the TV.

The idea is to raise our kids to be young people educated enough to make their own decisions; when they are exposed to "immorality" or conflicting messages/values, they are well equipped to handle it on their own.

The problem with conservatives is that they deny and try to over-shelter their kids. The problem with liberals is that they assume kids can just make up their own minds and it all works out. I think a little of both in good, moderate measures is the right recipe.

You might disagree, but that's why you have your own genitals for procreating your own experiment in developmental psychology. :D

  4. As a parent... on FCC Indecency Ruling Struck Down · · Score: 1

As a parent, I did the only intelligent thing in my decision making matrix: unplug the TV.

My wife and I do not watch television nor do we allow our child to watch TV. If we decide to entertain ourselves with passive entertainment, we pop in a carefully selected DVD from our collection or Netflix. Our 2 year old seems to be all the better for not becoming another media sponge.

I don't know what the big deal is--just turn off the television instead of bitching about what's on it.

Ultimately, parents need to make the decision what they allow into their home and to what they expose their children. You can't legislate morality--people break the laws and regulations we already have.

I loved Star Wars--I was 9 when the original hit the theaters. The first 3 (well, the last 3 episodes made into the first 3 movies) were awesome.

It started to go downhill when Lucas started "Disney-fying" it. At first, it was with Ewoks and then it turned into Jar-Jar. I was putting up with that until the "midichlorians" came. That ruined it for me--why couldn't the force just be "the force?" Midifuckingchlorians? Bugs in the blood? WTF, George? Sorry I digress...

The computer animated series looks pretty cool--it goes places maybe Lucas wouldn't go with film. I'd give it a shot--maybe. Star Wars is 30. I'm not 9 anymore. Sometimes, you just have to move on, man. I don't mean me; I mean Lucas--he needs to learn a new trick because he's really milked that cow dry.

I'll rent a DVD from Netflix but if I hear the word "midichlorians" I'm putting it back in the envelope and shipping it directly to hell.

  15. The UCMJ: The Abridged Bill of Rights on Soldiers Can't Blog Without Approval · · Score: 4, Informative

When you enlist or you are commissioned as an officer in the US Military forces, you sign paperwork that waives some of your "normal" civilian rights. Recruits and commissioned officers submit to a new bill of rights known as the "Uniform Code of Military Justice." The UCMJ is very clearly an abridged form of your rights as a US citizen. Sailers, Airmen, Marines, and Soldiers, while under contract to serve, understand this. This is not to say that the UCMJ is overly restrictive or oppressive--it's just not as wide open as your rights as a civilian (and it should not be).

Much like other laws in the states, they are not always enforced but the rules are there. Military personnel have voluntarily sacrficed their normal civilian freedoms as part of the terms of service. I don't think it's fair to cry foul if the military wants to censor communications. We might not agree with decisions from the White House, Capitol Hill, or the Pentagon, but people wearing those uniforms are bound by duty and oath to honor and obey their orders.

Since it's become so "fashionable" to commit suicide by taking out as many innocent people as possible, think again. The only thing worse than a copy cat is a misanthropic loser copy cat. You don't want to be remembered "like that," do you? I mean you'll be listed with all the other mass-murdering assholes by all three of your names--and your middle name probably is the reason the jocks kicked your ass in junior high.

Here's a stretch: drive out to a deslolate place, far away from homes or children, and put the gun right behind your ear and pull the trigger--all alone. Maybe even zip yourself up into a body bag first--just to help the poor bastard who has to haul your rotting loser carcass to the morgue.

A polite suicide--it would be a nice change.

Better yet, get some really good medication for your "problems." Those drugs will probably help you more than they will help the numerous survivors of your would-be victims.

If you really, really need to shoot people, I strongly suggest the Marine Corps--they actually NEED people like you right now. Just try to shoot the bad guys, OK? They need help with that, too.
