File sharing doesn't hurt record labels any more than radio play. I can hear new music anytime I turn on the radio, but I still want to go buy the CD for the art, the tactile experience, and the addition to my collection.
The big difference is that the RIAA owns your radio and make you listen to what they want you to listen. This is not yet the case with P2P.
How much do you want to bet that a study about software piracy conducted by the BSA is about as unbiased as a study about communism conducted by China? ... or by America, for that matter:)
I can't rule out that some unscrupulous hardware vendors may customise an 'embedded/modular Windows' to only allow installation of certain apps, namely apps supplied through the hardware vendor.
That's exactely the reason some vendors use Linux on their appliances: they can control what's gonna be installed on the machines. Think of the OEone for instance.
Alan,
Europa is building now, and many free software residents fear it'll adopt the American model wrt software patents, DMCA, etc.
What are, in your enlighted opinion, the steps individuals can take to prevent such a thing to happen ?
You think you'll manage to put the Matrix offline ? You really are a low-level tech, aren't you ? You don't have any sense of "customers" relationship.
The Matrix is a production server perpetually in use by a our "captive customers" and can't be put offline, just to "fix a bug", or our "customers" will start to use our competitor's interface, the Reality.
Find another solution or find another job.
How would this system work for remote login ? The terminal has to download the whole image series from the server ? The image series has to be standardized ? Both seem flawed IMHO.
There's a long rant on their website which compares Palm devices/OS to PocketPC devices/OS (basically the Ipaq) and "show" clear advantages for the former.
They just forgot one thing: my Ipaq runs Linux, X and GTK+ ! That has an *enormous* geek factor. Even if the PIM apps are still less usable than pocketOutlook (which is itself less usable than Palm's equivalent), it doesn't crash and is _hackable_. Good.
Say you went down to your local grocery store to buy some Extra-Triple Fudge Fatty Ice Cream and they said "no, we're only going to let you buy plain Neopolitian -- and by the way, we're going to be changing the policy here, if you want ice cream, you'll take it whenever we want to sell it to you and we'll be instituting annual billing for 52 Gallons of ice cream a year. Oh, and if you want to give your kids some, you'll have to buy extra containers for them, only one user per container. Oh, and our profit margins are below what our shareholders are used to, so we'll be raising the price every few months and thinking of new ways to require that you only buy Microsoft Ice Cream."
If you have Xfree86 4.x, you have the RENDER extention which does the same thing. See http://www.xfree86.org/~keithp/render/ for a description (screenshot at the bottom).
Now you just need the guy who'll patch Gtk to use this.
Would you really imagine working in such an environment ? Making windows transparent when moving them would be cool, but using a transparent Word-like would kill my eyes.
When I see the remaining BeOS fanatics hoping that their just-bought OS will be reborn, I'm reminded of my old Amiga days. But Amiga (as it was) is dead.
BeFans, don't hold your breath. Move on.
We understand, based upon the fact that our industry didn't rally to support us, that we need to change the way we interact and relate to our industry," Ballmer said.

Not really 3 days. Where's the fix for my distrib ?
Goodness, this thing is full of gramatical errors.
...
Otherwise it wouldn't have been a true troll
Microsoft is a corporation, bound to it's shareholders
If it was true, it should distribute dividends.

The AVi links have been removed from the site because of the /. effect. Go get them from the original site ...
Noticed how the "Sound OFF" thingy in the upper-right corner of the "unenhanced" picture is clearer than in the FAA16X antialiased one ?

Choosing software JUST because it's open sourced is just as bad as choosing software just because it's closed.
When you need transparency guarantees and you're a non-US governement/agency, free software is nearly the only alternative to Microsoft.
Could some fluent German-speaking guy offer us a rough translation of Microsoft's answer ? Thanks

Excuse me, but you just described MacDonald's
Big stories for little air ... also starring Alan Cox ...
THAT's Slashdot ! Can't wait for the next episode ;)
OK, for those who can't copy/paste, here it is again: The RENDER extension

Is /. now an official PR repository ? It seems more and more accepted submissions (even the latest Ask Slashdot) are from some marketing department.
Weird.
Mmmh, when will I have my Ping-chan [MegaTokyo.com] just for me ? Asimo is ... less exciting.

... it's Microsoft, of course !

Guess what, all your industry belongs to MS
remind me why the US still deals with the People's Republic?
... because it's a fake democraty, cynically headed by corps ?
