The agents can't be everywhere at once. At this point in the movie, the only reason they show any interest in Neo at all is because they're after Morpheus, and Morpheus seems to be interested in Neo. Remember: Morpheus' plugged-in life was as a hacker, and he continues to operate in that fashion. The agents are like the Matrix's sysadmins. The set up a "packet sniffer" to monitor the next likely point of attack (that's why Switch holds a gun on Neo; she's afraid whatever agent is monitoring the bug will jump into his body). Also, Neo doesn't understand about the Matrix at this point, so take any claim he makes about reality with a grain of salt. If you watch the two previous scenes, things are set up to appear to Neo that the whole bug incident was a nightmare. He's understandably surprised to find that it wasn't. Since the Matrix is illusory (I was surprised no one in the movie used the VR metaphor; it must not be the "in" term), some things are metaphorical, the bug being the most obvious. I took the mechanical doo-dad used by Trinity to be another metaphor for some kind of hacker tool.

Lots of movies I'm sure they hate just as much are mentioned every day, and these people don't succumb to the temptation to compose a huge commentary on all the borrowed cliches in "Notting Hill." And yet, one need only mention "The Matrix", and even now, 3 years later, and people come out of the woodwork, trying to show off what little they know about classical mythology and contemporary filmmaking. I guess "Intro Filmmaking 101" makes experts out of you all, eh?

I particularly love the poseurs who say they think people are being modded down just because people resent those who rip on popular things. And yet, here on Slashdot, I see far more negative comments about "The Matrix" than positive ones. This little subculture does rip on popular things. The little teeny-bopper geeks-in-waiting have only been around a little over a decade, but they already (claim to) know more about programming than Microsoft, and more about filmmaking than the Wachowskis. They see a couple 60's kung-fu movies at a friend's sleepover and think that makes them film connoisseurs.

Face it - a lot of the kids on this site have been bred to hate popular things. And they don't even consider that it's because they're not popular, so one way to feel good about themselves is to embrace a culture that preaches "popular things are bad." Linux fits that bill nicely. And thus, you have your target audience for Slashdot. Unfortunately, you then have a truly groundbreaking movie like "The Matrix", and it gets shunned by people who think the makers were going for Shakespeare.

The Wachoswkis weren't trying to re-invent the world. Read some interviews with them. All along, all they wanted was to make a cool sci-fi, kung-fu movie. They're just a couple of kids who got their dream come true and were granted a budget by a major studio. Like children in a candy store, they made the movie they wanted to make, and it worked. The editing was bang-on, the effects were groundbreaking, and it was a box-office sleeper hit. They succeeded.

But, unfortunately, in the eyes of their target demographic (Slashdotters), they had crossed over to the dark side. They were (shudder) popular.

Oh well. You can't please everybody. There are so many movies out there that are content with working on just one level. They follow the standard formula of plausible plot, one or too big-name actors, maybe a couple effects, rush it through the grinder and get it up on the screen. I really liked that the Wachowskis bothered to put in so many clever references, even if they didn't rival Freud's greatest works. It's just something fun, something new to discover each time you watch the movie. I think that's all they were going for, and I think it's sad that so many people think they are the final authority on what the film should have been, or was trying to be, when the Wachowskis have clearly articulated their vision already.

It just shows that it falls into the same trap that all villians do. The only difference between the AI and Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, is the fact that the AI doesn't have a sense of humor.

    Um, what other ship captains?

I believe that the lovely Mrs. Smith plays a captian in the next movie.

no, I am saying that the AI, should do what any good network admin does and monitor the users. It(and by "it" I mean whatever runs the matrix)should do things like detect unwanted logons, and disconnect them. It should register when people are accessing forbidden software (bendspoon.exe for instance) and log the users off when they access it.

    What Oracle?

Would you fumigate your whole house if you found some ants?

If I these ants were as sophisticated as humans were, if I found out about the ants weird religion that talked about "The One" who would free all the ants that I had hooked up to my computer, where there was a very real possibility that they would succeed, and the fact that they were as difficult to kill as these guys were goes to show that possibility exists.

Sure, grandma turning into a knife weilding man in a suit is more believable than some one dieing from a spider bite. When little billy looks up to see his mom turn into a man, pull a gun and shoot it into a crowd of people, he isn't going to go into shock. But if he sees someone die from what looks like a heart attack, he'll of course realize that his life is a lie and wake up in a tub of green goo with tubes stuck up his backside.

That would be a very short movie with no kung-fu whatsoever.

I would love to see a movie about those squid robots and their daily habits. Besides, since they have tentacles, I'm sure that they could perform much cooler martial arts than any human. I think they actually used them in blade II for the some of the fight scenes. Plus I'm sure that a squid robot would be a much better actor than Keanu.

It seems only reasonable that if the Matrix is this badly coded, then it must be a product of the beast we all know as Microsoft.

You write a friggin' patch and call it Matrix v1.2. Realistically, the Matrix should be put off line and fixed. The people at Microsoft seem to have introduced a number of patches, including the revolution software "Agent 1.0", as well as the "Self-Editing Operating System:Codename Deja-vu". However, there failed to introduce a solution, and instead serve as excellent warning signs to the Linux program "The One:Defence of Zion".

Also, it is only reasonable that by 2099(the assumed year of the Matrix) Microsoft will have grown to such a level that they rule the world and have machines write their code. Hence, AI simply builds upon the code they have been writing for years when they build the Matrix.

...and thus Windows paves the way for the Revolution.

You may think others need to lighten up, just like you probably would've told the Hero's of the American Revolution to lighten up.

OK, I'll try to keep this ontopic with the matrix, unlike others in this forum.

First off, define slave. Here's one meaning:
one that is completely subservient to a dominating influence.

Of course, the term "completely" means that to truly be a slave, you must lose everything including free will, but that's something that cannot be take away. Not even in the matrix.

I can't remember who said it but:
"If you work all your life, then you are a slave. If you do more, then you are free."

Neo was already free when morpheus found him, he "lived two lives" as agent smith so well put it. Thus making him a good candidate to see the Oracle. Just because we lose any liberties does not mean we lose the ability to get them back NOR does it mean we lose our ability to perform such an action which we are not at liberty to perform, or rather our free will, or rather our freedom. I suggest you rent Braveheart and get it straight, loss of liberty != slavery. You have full control whether you want to be a slave or not (unless you are in the matrix and do not know you are *physically* a slave), as well as how you want to escape or face the rammifications of retaking your lost liberties.

If what you said were true then the sequel would not be plausible because the people left in the matrix could not be saved thus making any efforts to find "The ONE" a waste of time. Well....except for Cypher. Does anyone know if he was killed from the blast or will he be in the sequel?

You make a nice point, except you're no minuteman. Hell, you don't even provide anything to back your point up or even clarify where we are apparently enslaved and how. The term liberties is too broad.Even throwing in words like MPAA and Sen. Hollings is too broad. Unless your a troll or don't want to be taken seriously.

I suggest, instead of trying to TROLL this matrix forum, you choose a more appropriate location. Hell, create a journal entry if you really meant what you said....Oh wait, you're an anonymous coward and can't afford to lose karma points. So I guess YOU must be enslaved...to your own pride.

like I said before, lighten up. Go outside. Watch a sunrise, unless your eyes hurt because you've never used them before. Or maybe watch the sequel. Its ENTERTAINMENT, that's all it is. Just remember you will always have free will. Just take the red pill and you will see this. And who said you had to be piss angry all the time to be a Hero of the American revolution? Oh yeah....some anonymous coward.
