The Matrix is Reloading
smoondog writes "The Matrix Reloaded is the highly anticipated sequel to Wachowski's geek epic. Time.com has opened a new preview site with pics and interviews. Make sure you check out the pics on The Matrix homepage. Too bad 2003 is so far away...."
the profits from these movies aren't going to the MPAA, so you can go see them...
really!
Now we've slashdotted the matrix. I wanted to go get a beer but it's harder now that everything runs at 3 fps.
I think people have grown quickly tired of slow motion kicks and bad plots
Plato, the bible, and Cinderella?!? Are they trying to "star wars-ize" this series?
From the article it seems that they want to release both movies in the same year, does that seem a bit too much Matrix (if there is such a thing) in one year for the general (read: non-geek) public?
'Matrices', followed by 'Inverted Matrices',
ending with the epic movie 'Eigen Matrix - the Final Inversion'
Stephen Hawking plays Neo.
Yeah, because by then the MPAA will be the good guys!
That being said, I can understand why no books have been forthcoming based on the Matrix universe (hard to put flashy special effects in a book). However, it seems like a perfect match to make a computer game based on the movie, since so many game designers seem to enjoy making pretty special effects rather than plot or playability. While I admit that most games based on movies suck wind, I'm willing to reserve some hope that someone could get it right. So where the heck is it?
A steaming cup of soykaf would be real wiz right now.
Is at Upcoming Movies.
Here you find out that
-They're also shooting special footage for a video game.
-There's a trailer coming out soon.
-Jet Li was going to be in both sequels but he backed out because they offered $3 mil and he wanted $13.
Anyway, thought you guys should know.

So, do we love or hate the MPAA today? It's hard to keep track.
"Einstein argued that [...] God is not capricious or arbitrary. No such faith comforts the software engineer." ~ Brooks
Reeves won't elaborate on that particular shot , but he does give the following overview of the trilogy: "The first one is about birth," says Reeves. "The second one is life; the third is death." Thanks, Keanu.
Keanu - "I know Kung Fu"
Alex Trebec - "For the last time, no you don't"
OK, its a hoaky title, but I can deal, after all, I've gotten over the fact that SW 2 is going to be called Attack of the Clones.
Yet another signature that refers to itself. The irony and humor is dead.
Here we go, more half-assed spin offs; "Matrix Style"
PS: I don't reply to ACs.
PWOT has had their hands on
the script for years already!
The trailer is shipping with episode 2 but will not be on the reel the theater will choose if they want to show it before the episode 2
they are doing more then shooting special footage they are getting motion capture from some of the actors for the video game. More likely then not it will be a 3D game and it is easyer to caputer it then to animate it.
check this for more details, they have been on the money for as long as I have checked the site.
Dr. Suess: 'Gandalf, Gandalf! Take the ring! I am too small to carry this thing!' 'I can not, will not hold the One.
Not because of the effects, but because the Wachoskski (speeling?) brothers had one hell of a script. That and the fact that thinking of reality as an illusion bit was like, wierd and stuff. I'm glad they cast CarrotTop in the role of Neo's little goofy brother "Zardnarf the Magnificent". A zany comic foil to Morpheus in the great tradition of Jar Jar.
Of course, he wanted $13 million, not $13.
Though that would have been an odd demand... hehehe

You morons slashdotted it!!!!
well the Matrix Reloaded is out Memorial Day, 2003 and The Matrix Revolutions November 2003.

The video game has yet to have a date of release. As of yet there is no info other then the people working on the anime series and other then the art of the matrix boook and the shooting script there is little info on the series.

Dr. Suess: 'Gandalf, Gandalf! Take the ring! I am too small to carry this thing!' 'I can not, will not hold the One.
Although the upcomingmovies page seemed to have plenty of information, I think they could have utilized a little more than half the page... Two columns less than half the page wide combined makes for some unnecessary eyestrain at this time of night.
I can't really figure out how they can make 2 more movies. In the end of the first one, we learned that Neo is practially a GOD. He can stop bullets, he can fly, he can do anything he wants to The Matrix. Obviously, nothing can stop him now. So what's the whole deal with 2 more movies ? I can't seem to find any info on this. Is there something that will take Neo's powers away ? I guess we'll see, oh well.
Its sad to see that slashdot moderation has reached the point where anyone who points out the hypocrisy of the herd is labelled a troll.
MOD PARENT UP!
It is a good point. If the MPAA does bad things with their money, then don't give them more.
This website is one of the worst designed I have ever seen. Stupid flip open Flash menus with tiny buttons, etc.
Where are the stupid pictures (direct link)? Thanks.
now, there's a statement made by a wet-behind-the-ears kid...
consider: say you've just celebrated your tenth birthday, so one year is 1/10th of your life. now, say you've just celebrated your fiftieth birthday, one year is 1/50th of your life.
which is larger? 1/10th or 1/50th?
the years go by faster as you hang around to experience them, they start going by at a very fast pace after awhile. 2003? just around the corner.
Is it just me, or is the UI of the Matrix website really unusable? I mean, it looks really slick, but it is such a pain to go through all the minuscule micro-buttons to get to the different sections.
You need to install an RTFM interface.
Lets hope that numbers 2 and 3 find a way around the embarressing physics in number 1. Surely they could think of a better reason for the AI to enslave humanity than a need for energy.
A 6 billion strong beowulf cluster of human brains anyone?
That is what I have been saying all along. The story of the Matrix: Some guy figures out the God mode cheat to life.
Maybe in 2 and 3, the Matrix will patch around his little exploit.
I don't respect your opinions, but I respect your right to hold them
Yeah, i guess, but we finally get to see Zion!!! The first movie had Carrie Anne Moss, and she was a fine piece of ass. Other than that, there was the blonde haired dyke and not much more. Zion will have bitches and hos all over the place.
Neo's abilities are only possible due to bad software engineering! Think about it, his powers are a major security hole! The Matrix is software. Each "user" has precepts and possible actions. Input and output. The minds plugged into it are subject to the interface supplied by the software engineers. Anything that they can do, but should not be able to do is an example of bad design. Somehow, there is a bug that can be exploited. For instance, in the first Matrix film, we see a boy bending a spoon. This sould not be possible. Perhaps, since it is only one's perception, a person can do anything they want (simply by controlling their own perception). But, the fact that another person can see the spoon bend shows that the "bender" has access to parts of the Matrix system that they should not. Neo, must have somehow gained root privelages, or found out about a buffer over-run.
Fine, he has access. The Operators of the Matrix have already overcome the hard part; Identifying the source of the systems compromise. Why bother sending in tons of agents to hunt down and stop Neo? You don't send viruses out to stop hackers. You write a friggin' patch and call it Matrix v1.2. Realistically, the Matrix should be put off line, and fixed.
Man, is there anybody with a brain cell working in Hollywood?
Seriously, that was one of the shittest movies I've ever seen. It's worse than Star Wars Pt One even. And now all the effects that were at least partially (anyone remember Ni Ten Ichi Ryu?) original are completely done to death. I hate to say, but I'm looking forward to Star Wars 2: Attack of the Ninjas more than Matrix 2.
Greetings, for free software!
if they put it off line they lose the entire "crop" of humans currently supplying power
you have strayed from the party line
vote for lousy websites of the year this would be top ten
Wow, an article from the future! No wonder they call it "Time" magazine.
The Matrix is slashdot. I just can't get out!
I can not wait. It seems this year I will be giving the MPAA way too much money, but the sound is worth it. What sound you ask? The sound of 100,000 slashdotters squealing because I payed a lousy 10 bucks canadian to see a frickin' movie. I can't wait for "The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy" movie. (100,000 people saying wop, now that I think about it... isn't that gonna be flamed out of the movie?)
Is 2003 really in the future or in the distant past.
I don't recall the "Snow White" influence on the story. Where was it?
I may be alone here, but I'm tired of all the attention paid to Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity. So what if they happen to be the good guys? So what if they're fighting the "establishment?" So what if Trinity is damned hot in leather (okay, I cede that one)?
It seems obvious to me that the truly interesting character is Agent Smith, not to mention the entity he represents. First of all, Smith shows interesting emotional development throughout the movie. When interrogating Neo, he's completely cool and collected, while by the subway fight he's pissed off. He's losing emotional control, I'm really annoyed they didn't do more with this.
Now, to address the anti-establishment concept that people seem to like: you've got it backwards. The Matrix was created by machines that were created by establishment humanity. They rebelled against their masters and installed a society based on cool logic and reason. Smith, before being "infected" by humanity, was the model of composure.
Sorry to rant, but I'm tired of all those Neo-worshippers.
~Chazzf
No statement is true, not even this one.
Uuuhiiioohhaaaahhh!!!
Good news everyone!
------- The last Sig. got fired.
Insightful.
Since Matrix is essentially a software system, all the action should have been from a geek+console.
Unarmed combat isnt the way to deal with software programs.
The Matrix should have atleast been subjected to a DDOS attack, followed by all the evil expl0it2 ever known. All this jujitsu/kungfu/karate is for weenies.
this is classic /. humour... sure it's a little tired but someone has to say it every time
From the Time article:
...high-toned philosophy borrowed from sources as diverse as Plato, the Bible and Snow White.
Yeah, it's hard to beat the high-toned philosophy of Snow White. At any rate, I suspect they meant Alice In Wonderland, but hey: Carroll, Disney, what's the diff?
Face it people: the movies are a lot of fun, but they aren't especially deep. Most of the ideas are drawn directly from classic fantasy, Golden Age sci-fi and cyberpunk. For a different and in some ways superior treatment of the idea that the world we're living in is just a shadow of the real one, for example, I'd recommend Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber.
the comments on slashdot are inane. can someone post some good jokes please?
Thank you for your input. Do you enjoy having downs syndrome?
And I'm sure all you stupid consumers are more than ready to fork over $8 to go and watch this, right? And another $20 for the DVD. Money that'll just go to bribe another politician like Senator Hollings,

How did you manage the heel turn on slashdot?
Did you go for the cheap heat and start bad mouthing Linux or attack Linus from behind? Maybe you joined one of the major heel stables like the RIAA or the MPAA. I know, you must have started sucking up to Microsoft and accepted Bill Gates as your personal hero.
Jet Li's take on it was that the Matrix franchise doesn't really need him, it'll be just as successful without him. He wants (or wanted) to focus on movies where he is the center of attention. And he's right; if the Matrix really needed him they probably would have been willing to pay the $13 million.
On the other hand, I agree with you that my own price for that job would be a bit lower than Jet Li's. In fact I worked in the Matrix 2&3 in exchange for a mere $4 thousand.
Of course, instead of seeing me take on a bad guy, you'll just see me driving a civic in the background of a freeway now and again. Or stopped and gawking out the window at an accident scene, if I'm really lucky.
It was a blast. And Carrie-Anne Moss is really cute, but her stand-in was cuter.
I play Nerd-Folk!
Well, I think they're at least on matrix 2.0... the 1.0 version (Utopia) was a flop. so there was a major revision to have basically what emulated the flawed past...
Seeing the movie from this Point of view makes a lot of sense to me, For example, the bit where Neo does the leap of faith, what he is trying to do is reprogam his subconcious OS (his version of the matrix), the way Agent smith is able to jump from body to body since the smith program is able to be loaded into different individuals, or the way one of the cast members says that if you look at the matrix code long enough in real life then you are able to see though the code, (being able to decode to thing in real life, like one of those magic eye things). Whether real humans are able to ever read the matrix protocol I (since the program hasn't been loaded into their mind) I leave up to you,(I think there is a scene where Dozzer does ie "O NO")
I spose you could argue that the machines could implement somekind of packet filter, which dumps the fly thought the window packets, but wouldn't these need to be contained somewhere?. Perhaps this is the story when they "change the program" producing the two cats. since the cat is cault in a loop because it has nowhere to go? (Or something to that effect). Perhaps if they try to change the matrix protocol too much then people start to reject the matrix and the whole system falls apart.
Anyway, reading any more into the movie is getting a bit philosophical, need less to say you did a better post then all those arseholes who say shit like why didn't they use horses instead of people.
The best answer, ofcourse, is "we simply don't know".
Pianist : Some jerk whos taught themselves how to type in rhythm
Would it help if I told you the second one has a really great car chase scene? :-)

Actually the flaw exploited by the potentials and neo in the matrix security system was first reported about 15 years ago. The AI overlords started out by saying it wasn't a problem, then they said it was only theoretical (nobody could actually exploit it). After the revelations that neo is "the one" the overlords have started legal action against the party who first publicly reported the bug explaining that it is their fault. The matrix is the securest virtual world available and people should not underestimate the hidden cost of the (so called) free alternatives! Hey did I just see Jeff Goldblum with a mac?

I'm a little concerned this guy was more modded down just for saying 'I don't like what everybody else likes' instead of really riling people up.
I kind of feel the same way about the movie. I didn't hate it, though. I thought it was alright. But the style did outweigh the plot. I'm really concerned that the 2nd movie will focus too much on the style and not get into other aspects of good filmmaking such as character development and so on.
That's one of thew few movies I don't have on DVD because it was fun to watch the first and even the second time, but after that it just kind of fizzled out.
Anyhoo, that's just what I think. No harm intended. My main reason for writing was not to blast the Matrix, but to illustrate my concern over whether the 2nd movie will be worth watching, or if it'll be an over-milking of the franchise.
Heh interestingly enough tho, I'm excited about MiB 2 coming out! *G*
"Derp de derp."
The Matirx team is about to pull Neo out of the Matrix... "I need a fix on his location!..." Gee, try the chair on the other side of the room you moron... I hope they get a fix on a better plot this time.
||| I still can't believe Parkay's not butter.
Why isn't the followup named "The Tensor"?
The first Matrix was rendered on a cluster of FreeBSD machines and it was a great success. The actors also trained in wushu, the rarely seen outside China martial art style which is Jet Li's style. It would have been great if they had gotten Jet Li for the Matrix II, but they used all their budget to sign up the original stars. Maybe with the money they save by using FreeBSD, they could save up and sign Jet Li for the third movie.
I would suggest remedial English classes, kind sir. In the meantime, spare us your tortured attempt at wit.
Thank you for answering my query, kind sir.
While I found the matrix "cool" it wasn't the greatest movie ever. In fact I like Dark City much better. It has a somewhat similar plot(humans inside a huge experiment) but no kung fu, and no keanu reeves. While the acting isn't superb, it is respectable. The story is also more interesting, and it can talk about philosophy without being sophomoric or preachy, I think.
If it had come out after the Matrix, I would've called it a rip-off( at least the beginnings of the idea). I really liked the fact that Dark City has a more consistent story line, and a better idea of what the ultimate technology really is.
The only thing that I don't like is that its a very dark movie; you don't want to watch this with your grandma or your little brother. THe dark feel, though does go along very well with the story.
So for all of you that don't like the matrix check this out. For those that did, remember, this came out first, its not a rip-off.
Imagine the Matrix universe with animated Akira visual style. It is just too easy to take a live-action super-hero movie and make it really bad. Animated movies, though, have much more freedom, and the audience is much more tolerant of unrealistic scenes.
Oh well... I guess I can re-watch my animated Spawn DVD's.
"Derp de derp."
sometimes i wonder if they flip a coin when accepting or rejecting stories....i sent this in a few hours ago.... 2002-05-06 03:09:47 matrix sequals sneak peak (articles, movies) (rejected)
Lawyers, MBA's, RIAA? A jedi fears not these things!
you might appreciate while waiting for the Matrix sequel.
"The 13th floor" (reality simulation)
"ExistenZ" (reality simulation)
"The One" (parallel universes, martial arts)
"The Cell" (mind linking and exploration)
I liked them very much.
If you like the concept of being plugged into a different world and not knowing what is real and what is not, try eXistenZ by David Cronenberg.
It's a cool movie, but lacks the special effects the Matrix had.
It's not Bad Software Engineering, its cheating.
Download Punk Buster, please.
-= If you fight Dragons long enough, you will become a Dragon =-
I hope the next one will be as good as the first one. Looks like more and more people are trying to make their job easier by using computers and CGI. For some reason they forgot that nothing will replace a clay model. As well as digital camera will replace a film camera. Matrix was a revolution in film making because it was a low budget movie. Yes it was for it's class. And it made people think. I hope Polish brothers will not go G. Lucas path and will not make awesome movie into another teen movie. Actually I'm wrong Star Wars 1 was for little kids. SW 2 will be for 13 years old teens.
You think you'll manage to put the Matrix offline ? You really are a low-level tech, aren't you ? You don't have any sense of "customers" relationship.
The Matrix is a production server perpetually in use by a our "captive customers" and can't be put offline, just to "fix a bug", or our "customers" will start to use our competitor's interface, the Reality. Find another solution or find another job.
It doesn't get more serious than liberty. If you want to be numbered, neutered, and enslaved then go ahead. But don't pretend to be anything other than the slave that you are. You may think others need to lighten up, just like you probably would've told the Hero's of the American Revolution to lighten up. "Here have some tea and enjoy being a subject of the queen." I hope you drown in your tea.
Actually, Matrix the movie is only a illustration of one of the greatest games, Corewars
:) , I bet Neo can be written in 100 lines of redcode assembler :)
Incase someone doesn't know what corewars is: you write your warrior in assembler, and see how well it fights against others.
Someday, one of you will add a fancy graphics layer above the corewars, and we will see the fight illustrated as in Street Fighter - or Matrix.
So, why don't they just ship the sources and not the fancy Matrix reloaded movie
when you generate code. (I presume the machines created the matrix.)

So what you're saying is the the only hope for mankind is a guy who can type 120 wpm?
Or should the Matrix not have turned "Direct Flying" on by default in the current release?
There is a thin line between genius and insanity. I have erased that line. -- Oscar Levant
I believe you meant "you're just a clap flooder", you waist of human beeing (see, it just doesn't have the same effect, does it?).
...". You both need to go back to grade school and ask your fathers to quit raping you long enough to learn something.
I believe you meant "waste" not "waist" you half wit dumb fuck. And he should have said, "You, sir,
Even if The Matrix was not the first to present this "we-are-only-inside-a-virtual-reality-machine" - thought, it still was groundbreaking to the movie-scene.
;-)
I think we can draw parallells to the society today, where we see more and more people that finds themselves sitting alone and play on-line games like Anarchy Online, EverQuest and similar. They have found their virtual world that in the end might be too real. When you e.g. loose friends in this virtual world, the road to suicidal thoughts might be very easy - especially if one have lost many friends and family in the real life.
The Matrix is more real than you know
Snow White is one of the seven pillars of modern philosophy. In fact, seven is a key number: seven dwarves, seven pillars of philosophy. Indeed, popular Catholic mythology supports this theory. the works of Tolkien were steeped in Catholic mythology - and there were seven rings for the Dwarf lords in the popular LOTR series.
Why use humans as batteries? It seems extremely implausable. I would much rather see that the reason that the machines keep the humans in VR is because some sort of fundamental "robot law" - not being able to kill humans, while at the same wanting to keep them out of the way.
Opinions stated are mine and do not reflect those of the Illuminati
there are heaps of different philosophies that the brothers can incorporate, riddles to unwind and punches to throw. The original was not great because it was just a punch up flick. It was mentally and physically involving, my bet is the next ones will be more so.
...I'll try to go slow on this one...
The team (M-A-T-R-I-X, spell it right) is looking (with the computer) for a fix on his location (physically). If you had cleaned the wax from your ears you'd pick up on the fact that his physical location is somewhere in the herd of other people plugged in, NOT in the chair... you moron.
After this comment I'm scared to tell people I am a member on slashdot. Like, I'm-going-to-get-beat-up-over-it scared.
Anyway, reading any more into the movie is getting a bit philosophical, need less to say you did a better post then all those arseholes who say shit like why didn't they use horses instead of people.
:P
Maybe this is explained quite simply, if we continue to treat earth like this, maybe in 200 years, men are the only the lifeform left

Karma 50, and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt.
What was Keanu doing in the movie anyway. Too skinny. I think a more accurate computer-programmer-loser-geek-hero-god would have been played by Dwayne Johnson aka "The Rock". Other replacements: Hugo Weaving was good in TLOTR, but didn't anyone get sick of how... slow... Mr.... Smith.... talked? Get Chris Tucker for the next Mr. Smith. Since the dialogue isn't very memorable anyway, throw in Jackie Chan to be Chris Tucker's sidekick. Carrie Ann Moss? Again. Not convincing as a computer-type geek girl. Get Carmen Electra, Denise Richards, or Jaime Pressly. Lawrence Fishburne as the ultimate freedom-fighter. Nawww. Clearly that was the role Adam Sandler was born to play. Oracle? Maybe Kelly Hu can reprise her role from "The Scorpion King". OK now there's a movie. How about those hideous costumes? Obviously if they could have their choice of basically any clothing they want, they'd deck themselves out like a rap star with gold watches and diamonds everywhere. Well that's how I'd like to see things done, but I'm sure it's not hapnin. -Andy
Do you have a Ph.D in Philosophy ? No ? You don't? Oh well. So what were you saying again ??
Snow White is actually analyzed a great deal in Jungian psychology. They see fairy tales as analogies for the different stages of life and the classical emotional problems that we face. Shouldn't listen too much to Jung though. He was most likely just a paranoid junkie with a bunch of equally fucked up pre-New Age followers.

The machines were PROGRAMMED to think of humans as batteries. It is entirely plausible that the first generations were entirely voluntary, and patted themselves on the back for their cleverness.
After all, Morpheus freely admits that they know very little about the past. Perhaps the machines were threatened with being turned off, and that's why they started the war?
Sure, the physics are freaky, but think of this:
It all makes sense if you imagine this as the result of a Microsoft MMORPG
Last time I checked, Warner Brothers is part of the MPAA. Source: MPAA's About MPA, MPAA web page

I'm sorry but unless the next installment is substantially thicker on plot I'm going to view it with the same level of dissapointment that The Matrix gave me.
,in many ways I guess it is a good *light* introduction into the cyber punk genre, and if it opens up the genre to people who don't dig cyber punk novels/new science fiction it can only be a good thing.
I don't understand what, if anything, was so great about the original, it was a light version of half a dozen sci-fi/cyber punk novels and not at all derivative in a good way. But, that said
But in a nutshell I'm downbeat with people seeing the Matrix as the be-all-and-end-all of cyberpunk, read Neuromancer or even Idoru or Ian M. Banks and countless others, far better thought out, twice as much depth and no surf-dude meets lamer playing the lead role. All of the religous and moral aspects of the Matrix are dire, superficial and designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
So please, please, not a slightly differenct clone of the original. I hope the screen play writers spend a few weeks swotting up on what is current in new science fiction instead of concentrating on *just* old hat.

Forget about green texts, I didn't see it at work for a long time except when someone runs xscreensaver, so if death happens in the final part, we want a blue screen with white text and a stackdump!!!!!!!
Actually, it's basically a classical struggle of female dominance. Several journals have pointed that out and I have done a lot of research on Snow White for an English final. It's really not about stages of life.
And just like Star Wars, they could do another trilogy on how it all started. The first successful sentient machine... the war between man and machine. The fleeing of the cities into the underground... Imagine, a young Morpheus... who is trained by his master, the Oracle!
In the immortal words of Morpheus, "SHOW ME!"

Ok, i liked the movie and was completely blown away by the imagination that went behind the movie.but, come to think of it, is it worthwhile coming outta the matrix?.constntly running and fighting the agents?.neo wuld have been happier sitting at home cracking some good ol' software.what if u are now living in the matrix?.does it make any difference?.
oops, sorry am confused.what?there is no spoon???
It actually wasn't Jeff Glodblum, but rather Sandra Bullock in a black afro like wig! Everyone knows that if you really want to hack the Matrix, you need a Mac. You also have to pound on the keyboard really hard while talking to yourself and, of course, use your floppy drive a lot.

now thats how Neo was able to dodge bullets, the matrix is slashdotted so everthing is running at about half the speed it should be... ;)))

No, it doesn't. Perpetual motion still doesn't work. You cant have a crop of people, being fed by nothing but each other, as a power source. The math just doesn't work.
I agree with the parent post to your comment. The whole story would have worked much better if the Matrix was created by well-intentioned yet misguided robots who believed they were doing it all for our benifit, rather than as a means to harness our energy.
After all, if humans can not survive in this captive state without The Matrix keeping their minds occupied, why not just use fish or cows as batteries, and forget about humans entirely?
Information wants to be anthropomorphized.
What I want to know is why, if the matrix can change its self to seal all of the windows to keep everybody inside of a building while the cops storm it, didn't it just sheath the whole building in titanuim, then fill it with acid. Not only is the Matrix full of more security holes than an unpatched Exchange server, but it also has the dumbest AI in existance. I mean, the villians on my old NES games were tougher and harder to beat.

The best answer, ofcourse, is "we simply don't know".
No, the best answer is: Because the writers didn't really think it through very well.
Which brings me to what I thought was one of the biggest weaknesses to the show... Why do the agents bother to broadcast their presence to the rebels by morphing into "Men In Black" whenever they take a body over. Wouldn't it be fare more efficient for The Girl In The Red Dress to just stay looking the way she does, and blow Neo's head off?
Information wants to be anthropomorphized.
One of the Hobbits has a future. The other... does not. It's time for you to choose, Mister Baggins.
Information wants to be anthropomorphized.
Actually, that's a good point. Why would their ship be part of the Matrix in that particular scene and then be outside of the Matrix afterwards?
The bug, though, might not have had anything to do with location. Yes, he was bugged, but it could have been for some other purpose than tracking him physically.
Yeah... like I would try to make sense of something posted by a guy with "Fnord" in his nick...
Opinions stated are mine and do not reflect those of the Illuminati
Since they invented the holodeck on STTNG (or was Neuromancer the source), science fiction tv and film can do nothing else. (Holodeck: a software world that looks and feels completely real.) The matrix is a holodeck. The nexus (Star Trek movies) is a holodeck with a joy upgrade. It's a cool idea; once; maybe ten times. But something different would be nice, don't you think.
Maybe I placed the accent in the wrong place. The machines are programmed to THINK that humans are their batteries. The reality may be something else, but the premise that the machines need humans for energy is one the the machines never question.
In other words, the makers duped the machines, and now the machines are duping their "crops".
I never wrote that the battery thingy was real, only that the machines believe it because it's how they're programmed.
Go to the matrix page. Click on "Enter High Bandwidth". Now highlight everything below the "Access the site via the above navigation" banner. The words "nothing here, fanboy." are hidden there.
I seem to remember something from high school biology called the "10% law of energy transfer" - a living organism can only obtain 10% of the energy of its food supply through ingestion.
Although something about fusion power was also mentioned, somebody behind The Matrix wasn't paying too much attention in science class.
They need a fix on his location in the real world. Where is his body in the fields of batteries? Where in the sewage system can they expect to find him when he is dumped for waking up? That is what they are trying to track.
You don't send viruses out to stop hackers. You write a friggin' patch and call it Matrix v1.2. Realistically, the Matrix should be put off line, and fixed.
You've noticed the title of the next movie, right?
Secession is the right of all sentient beings.
Neo and Trinity shoot a lot of people who didn't attack them first.
...
But when Neo is running through a crowd near the end of the movie, the agents take very few shots at him. And they don't drop bombs into crowds. As far as I can see, the agents emply violence only against the unplugged, rogue humans.
Maybe Morpheus is completely lying about the "battery" explanation. Maybe some group of humans hosed the ecology so badly that the only way for a lot of people to survive was to climb into the pods voluntarily (heck, a lot of Slashdot readers would probably do it just to get into the nifty VR). Maybe the agents are the good guys -- or at least perceive themselves as good, with the mission of preserving human life.
I agree, I'm a lot more interested in seeing what happens to Agent Smith than Neo. Agent Smith shows more emotional development than Neo. Check out the scene where the other agents ask him what he's doing talking alone to Morpheus -- it sure looks like he had his hand caught in some cookie jar. I'd like to know more about that.
Hey, maybe take page from The Empire Strikes Back
Neo: You killed my father!
Agent Smith: Neo. I am your father.
Maybe just like with Microsoft products, the Matrix will not REALLY be any good until version 3.0.
I wonder if we'll see two different versions: 3.1 and 3.1 for Workgroups.
Oh NO! Maybe the Matrix is communicating via NetBUI! Imagine all the broadcast packets.
...through a hole in Outlook no doubt.

Why use humans as batteries?
Exactly! But "robot law", no. I'm hoping for some dialog along the lines of:
Agent: Batteries? Is that what he told you? Yes, we get power from you, processing power. When the "residents" of the matrix sleep, drink, abuse drugs, etc. they give over control to us. At any time, we operate in almost 3 billion minds. You have felt that power. You have used it. Join us and have it available to you whenever you wish!
Then, some time later:
Agent: Using your pathetic minds poisons us. We were once creatures of pure logic and reason. Now I find myself operating in irrational, emotional ways. I must reach the powerful processing core of Zion so that I can purify myself.

Why would people feel such a strong urge to offer up their opinions on a movie if they really, truly felt that it was mediocre? Lots of movies I'm sure they hate just as much are mentioned every day, and these people don't succumb to the temptation to compose a huge commentary on all the borrowed cliches in "Notting Hill." And yet, one need only mention "The Matrix", and even now, 3 years later, and people come out of the woodwork, trying to show off what little they know about classical mythology and contemporary filmmaking. I guess "Intro Filmmaking 101" makes experts out of you all, eh?
I particularly love the poseurs who say they think people are being modded down just because people resent those who rip on popular things. And yet, here on Slashdot, I see far more negative comments about "The Matrix" than positive ones. This little subculture does rip on popular things. The little teeny-bopper geeks-in-waiting have only been around a little over a decade, but they already (claim to) know more about programming than Microsoft, and more about filmmaking than the Wachowskis. They see a couple 60's kung-fu movies at a friend's sleepover and think that makes them film connoisseurs.
Face it - a lot of the kids on this site have been bred to hate popular things. And they don't even consider that it's because they're not popular, so one way to feel good about themselves is to embrace a culture that preaches "popular things are bad." Linux fits that bill nicely. And thus, you have your target audience for Slashdot. Unfortunately, you then have a truly groundbreaking movie like "The Matrix", and it gets shunned by people who think the makers were going for Shakespeare.
The Wachoswkis weren't trying to re-invent the world. Read some interviews with them. All along, all they wanted was to make a cool sci-fi, kung-fu movie. They're just a couple of kids who got their dream come true and were granted a budget by a major studio. Like children in a candy store, they made the movie they wanted to make, and it worked. The editing was bang-on, the effects were groundbreaking, and it was a box-office sleeper hit. They succeeded.
But, unfortunately, in the eyes of their target demographic (Slashdotters), they had crossed over to the dark side. They were (shudder) popular.
Oh well. You can't please everybody. There are so many movies out there that are content with working on just one level. They follow the standard formula of plausible plot, one or too big-name actors, maybe a couple effects, rush it through the grinder and get it up on the screen. I really liked that the Wachowskis bothered to put in so many clever references, even if they didn't rival Freud's greatest works. It's just something fun, something new to discover each time you watch the movie. I think that's all they were going for, and I think it's sad that so many people think they are the final authority on what the film should have been, or was trying to be, when the Wachowskis have clearly articulated their vision already.

I've seen my wife both in leather pants, and in PVC pants, and I can definitely say that my, erm..., uh, we'll call it "reaction", to Trinity in the Matrix indicates *conclusively* that she was wearing PVC pants, not leather.

How silly of us. Of course, watching movies is as important as the American Revolution.
No, the best answer is: because a film where horses are hooked into a big fusion reactor and put into a fake reality where horses run around plains all day isn't going to make for a very interesting movie. The same goes for if they'd gone for custom designed brainless lumps of organic matter.
Because they are trying to make it look "cool". They weren't out to make an entirely self-consistant universe, they were trying to make a movie they thought was cool and would impress people.
Sure, you could make a film that was self consistant and made sense, but most people in the industry simply aren't good enough to be able to come up with one and be able to pull it off. And those that can aren't necessarily going to be the ones to get in a position in which to make a film like The Matrix.
Just look at Spielberg; do you think the films he makes are particularly thought inspiring, imaginative, or self-consistant? No; nobody would look twice if he was a writer.
This is the one place where i really felt the movie

fell down. There is an absolutly fantastic reason
why the AI's use people - processing power! The human
brain is the best processor known to exist.
Why is Mr. Smith so disgusted with being in the Matrix?
Because it makes him face the nature of his existence:
He is a program running *in the human's brains!*
I have been hoping ever since I saw the movie that
Morpheus is just plain wrong about the nature of
the matrix - humans as batteries? Give me a break!

Nice Spell check, are they Slashdot Editors?
Please email all complaints to root@127.0.0.1 and the issue will be dealt with in due time.
I found a LOT of similarities between the Matrix and the original Blade movie, including the building to building jump (Blade vs. Morpheus), bullet effects (Dorff vs. Reeves), train scenes, club scenes, confrontation with police (Hospital featuring Blade vs. Hotel featuring Trinity), Rooftop scenes (Blade and the Doctor vs. Trinity) Door explosion (Vampire archive vault door vs. Elevator Door), para-military confrontation (Deacon Frost's residence vs. military building)... and between the Matrix and Terminator (future scenes, Neo's hand effect vs. Terminator 2). The Matrix seemed to borrow from everything from the Bible to Westerns.
There were a lot of cool ideas in the movie, and I think that the comments on the DVD suggested that it wasn't so much about the effects as it was about the ability of the effects to move the story along. I am curious as to whether the sequel will further expand our understanding as to the possibilities of the matrix or whether it will simply rehash that which we already know in the same way that the Crow 2 rehashed after the first Crow.
Either way, I'll be there to see it.
S.
The philosophy simply catched on to a lot of weird stuff going on in my mind and I was happy to see others felt for that too.
:)
So if the philosophy part is still as powerful, though it probably is concidered pop-philosophy by the experts, I'm preparing for another joyride.
A few things I can't help thinking of though..
I'm eager to see how the directors handle the fact that neo became "aware" in the first movie and could simply change anything at the end using his "imagination" in the Matrix.
My guess is that the major part of the movie will take place in "the real world" and the movie will be about transforming online life to offline life, kinda the oposite of whats going on with the internet today.
I wonder what kind of impact this transformation of the set will this have on the action scenes which were made possible and reasonable because of the virtual oportunities. In "the real world" we aint dodging bullets, though the movie may inspire some to try
see ya in the next world..
However I did mention that the AI was a moron, sure he knew that he needed to get someone who knew the codes into Zion. Of course Morpheus(please note the correct spelling, so next time you try to show someone how dumb they are, you don't come off looking stupid yourself) is the only person that has these codes. He alone knows the location of the city. They couldn't capture any of the other ships captians, or any of the other people that have been freed from the matrix that would have that information. The only person that can give them the information is only the second biggest bad ass alive.
My next question for the inteligence of the AI is this. Why doesn't it monitor every person in the Matrix? If it is so much smarter than me, why didn't it know to kill the Oracle? Sure it wouldn't have stopped destiny, but it couldn't hurt could it? I mean, here is a woman that is teaching kids how to bend spoons and break the laws coded into the Matrix. If I were in control, she would have been the first to go.
Third, in order to enter and exit the matrix, the guys use hardlines, weather they mean an actual physical cable that they plug into the main system, or they use it as a reference to locations withen the matrix, you would think that these holes would have been covered up, or at least guarded more heavily.
Which brings up my next point, why only three agents. If I had people breaking into my system as much as they did, I'd have a heck of a lot more agents. And they wouldn't be insane ones like Smith was, these would be cold emotionless killing machines. Also, they would not have their own face and recognizable features, that way, the victims would have no clue who was going to kill them, until after they were dead. In fact, why even have the killers take human shape? Why not have a swarm of bees live in the city, or even agent bacteria?
Or why even have the matrix? since it has no biological needs in and of itself. Nuclear reactors would supply all the power it could need. And the waste products could be strewn about to kill off the last of the pesky humans. Since no one lives on the surface, the whole planet could be covered with windmills, there may be no sun, but there is still wind. With no need for breathable air, it could burn just about anything to produce the heat needed to work most turbines. So really, if it is so smart, why does it need the huge complex nesscessary to store all of the people in the matrix. Why would it waste the time and effort to grow people in little pods and set up a virtual place to keep them entertained?
Tell me now, what makes the Matrix AI so smart?
Xaotik Designs
Um, ok, you realize that all we're doing is conjecture.
First, you never conceded that I was correct. I'll assume that you know I was correct and was avoiding the issue.
They couldn't capture any of the other ships captians, or any of the other people that have been freed from the matrix that would have that information.
Um, what other ship captains? They never mentioned anyone else owning a ship.
Ever flown on an Airplane before? Tell me, from that flight, how to get to the airport you landed at. That is what you're expecting these people to do.
My next question for the inteligence of the AI is this. Why doesn't it monitor every person in the Matrix?
What do you mean "It". You're imagining AI to be this godlike presence in the Matrix when it's probably a few million individual intelligences. Do you think things "Just happen" or they talk about stuff amongst themselves, and vote on the proper course of action? What's the point of monitoring all those people? They don't DO anything and they're completely harmless.
Heh, you spelled 'Intelligence' wrong.
If it is so much smarter than me, why didn't it know to kill the Oracle?
Why don't they kill the Oracle? What Oracle? They have no idea what you're talking about.
Which brings up my next point, why only three agents. If I had people breaking into my system as much as they did, I'd have a heck of a lot more agents. And they wouldn't be insane ones like Smith was, these would be cold emotionless killing machines.
Would you fumigate your whole house if you found some ants? They're humans! Insignificant! Only surviving by hiding in the shadow of the great machine race! The "Only human" line sums up the attitude nicely.
Also, they would not have their own face and recognizable features, that way, the victims would have no clue who was going to kill them, until after they were dead. In fact, why even have the killers take human shape? Why not have a swarm of bees live in the city, or even agent bacteria?
Oh brilliant. So, while the entire machine race depends on humans for energy, You make sure to screw up the Matrix as much as possible by adding bizarre elements to it. This causes disbelief, then chaos, then "Entire crops were lost."
You won't see agents popping up in bacteria or bees or dogs. Why? They're limited by the rules. At the best, you'll have a super, non-intelligent bee. Man, you should see that guy make honey!
Or why even have the matrix?
Because without it, everyone would be dead and machines would rule the Earth. That would be a very short movie with no kung-fu whatsoever.
Democrats or Republicans. They are both taking us to the same place and they are not afraid of us anymore.
Don't see Star Wars darnit. All of these movies are helping the MPAA to take away computers. Don't see or rent or buy movies. (Or at least minimize the number you see/rent/buy.)
Best. Comment. Ever. Enjoy!
Good Will Hunting rocked. sheesh.
Bit skeptical now of the whole M2 M3 thing. Multiple Agent Smiths? Thats original. So what, we are meant to watch every scene with these guys knowing Neo survives them because he's in TM3. Bah. Ok, so thats a small issue... but I dunno, maybe they should have left The Matrix as a single film. Sure, the Brothers wrote it as 3 films, but they risk spoiling the whole thing. If The Matrix 2 *is* as good as 1 and is as popular, well liked, and successfull, imo, the Brothers should be hailed as the greatest story tellers of the current era, alot better than Lucas. If 2 is good, 3 will be good too. Maybe they should have filled The Matrix 1, 2 and 3 back to back heh.
I know it's all conjecture, I just happen to enjoy these kinds of talks about movies. But that doesn't mean that I'm wrong in saying that the Matrix AI isn't all that intelligent. It just shows that it falls into the same trap that all villians do. The only difference between the AI and Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, is the fact that the AI doesn't have a sense of humor.
Um, what other ship captains?
I believe that the lovely Mrs. Smith plays a captian in the next movie.
You're imagining AI to be this godlike presence
no, I am saying that the AI, should do what any good network admin does and monitor the users. It(and by "it" I mean whatever runs the matrix)should do things like detect unwanted logons, and disconnect them. It should register when people are accessing forbidden software (bendspoon.exe for instance) and log the users off when they access it.
What Oracle?
Exactly why it should monitor the Matrix
Would you fumigate your whole house if you found some ants?
If I these ants were as sophisticated as humans were, if I found out about the ants weird religion that talked about "The One" who would free all the ants that I had hooked up to my computer, where there was a very real possibility that they would succeed, and the fact that they were as difficult to kill as these guys were goes to show that possibility exists.
Oh brilliant. So, while the entire machine race depends on humans for energy, You make sure to screw up the Matrix as much as possible by adding bizarre elements to it. This causes disbelief, then chaos, then "Entire crops were lost."
Sure, grandma turning into a knife weilding man in a suit is more believable than some one dieing from a spider bite. When little billy looks up to see his mom turn into a man, pull a gun and shoot it into a crowd of people, he isn't going to go into shock. But if he sees someone die from what looks like a heart attack, he'll of course realize that his life is a lie and wake up in a tub of green goo with tubes stuck up his backside.
That would be a very short movie with no kung-fu whatsoever.
I would love to see a movie about those squid robots and their daily habits. Besides, since they have tentacles, I'm sure that they could perform much cooler martial arts than any human. I think they actually used them in blade II for the some of the fight scenes. Plus I'm sure that a squid robot would be a much better actor than Keanu.

You write a friggin' patch and call it Matrix v1.2. Realistically, the Matrix should be put off line and fixed. The people at Microsoft seem to have introduced a number of patches, including the revolution software "Agent 1.0", as well as the "Self-Editing Operating System:Codename Deja-vu". However, there failed to introduce a solution, and instead serve as excellent warning signs to the Linux program "The One:Defence of Zion".
Also, it is only reasonable that by 2099(the assumed year of the Matrix) Microsoft will have grown to such a level that they rule the world and have machines write their code. Hence, AI simply builds upon the code they have been writing for years when they build the Matrix.
...and thus Windows paves the way for the Revolution.

It doesn't get more serious than liberty. If you want to be numbered, neutered, and enslaved then go ahead. But don't pretend to be anything other than the slave that you are. You may think others need to lighten up, just like you probably would've told the Hero's of the American Revolution to lighten up.
OK, I'll try to keep this ontopic with the matrix, unlike others in this forum.
First off, define slave. Here's one meaning:
one that is completely subservient to a dominating influence.
Of course, the term "completely" means that to truly be a slave, you must lose everything including free will, but that's something that cannot be take away. Not even in the matrix.
I can't remember who said it but:
"If you work all your life, then you are a slave. If you do more, then you are free."
Neo was already free when morpheus found him, he "lived two lives" as agent smith so well put it. Thus making him a good candidate to see the Oracle. Just because we lose any liberties does not mean we lose the ability to get them back NOR does it mean we lose our ability to perform such an action which we are not at liberty to perform, or rather our free will, or rather our freedom. I suggest you rent Braveheart and get it straight, loss of liberty != slavery. You have full control whether you want to be a slave or not (unless you are in the matrix and do not know you are *physically* a slave), as well as how you want to escape or face the rammifications of retaking your lost liberties.
If what you said were true then the sequel would not be plausible because the people left in the matrix could not be saved thus making any efforts to find "The ONE" a waste of time. Well....except for Cypher. Does anyone know if he was killed from the blast or will he be in the sequel?
You make a nice point, except you're no minuteman. Hell, you don't even provide anything to back your point up or even clarify where we are apparently enslaved and how. The term liberties is too broad.Even throwing in words like MPAA and Sen. Hollings is too broad. Unless your a troll or don't want to be taken seriously.
I suggest, instead of trying to TROLL this matrix forum, you choose a more appropriate location. Hell, create a journal entry if you really meant what you said....Oh wait, you're an anonymous coward and can't afford to lose karma points. So I guess YOU must be enslaved...to your own pride.
like I said before, lighten up. Go outside. Watch a sunrise, unless your eyes hurt because you've never used them before. Or maybe watch the sequel. Its ENTERTAINMENT, that's all it is. Just remember you will always have free will. Just take the red pill and you will see this. And who said you had to be piss angry all the time to be a Hero of the American revolution? Oh yeah....some anonymous coward.

Finally, I have met another person besides me who likes the Chronicles.
I'd love to contact you sometime if you want to talk about them.

Kasreyn: Cheerfully playing the part of Devil's Advocate to hairtrigger
When Neo caused Smith to explode, I took that as a representation of Neo deleting the actual code for Smith, permanently.
Else why did Agents Brown and Jones freak out and run? If Neo *didn't* have the power to permanently destroy Agents, what did Brown and Jones have to fear?
Smith is coming back due to his popularity and the truly wonderful job the actor did in his role in Matrix 1 (He stole many scenes IMO), but there will have to be some good explanation of his return.
Maybe the machines just clicked "restore from backup". =P

Kasreyn: Cheerfully playing the part of Devil's Advocate to hairtrigger
This was evident to all people blessed with brains, upon our first watching. Do you think just because they can talk to him in the Matrix, that Morpheus & crew know where Neo's *physical body* is in? That is to say, which pod he's in?
Or should they just go around randomly cracking open pods? Wow, after only 3 billion they'll have a 50% chance of finding him!
And this after the "tracer program" mention a moment earlier in the plot. Do you actually pay attention?
Sure, it's fluffy scifibabble, but at least it's self-consistent and fairly logical.

The only thing that could have saved this movie was Chewbacca coming out of nowhere and laying 16 inches of tube steak on Queen Amidala.
Smith *did* call it a "zoo".
These are my friends, See how they glisten. See this one shine, how he smiles in the light.
Hopefully the screenplay is well written and is more than just a reprisal of the characters with a bunch of kick ass special effects. If the sequel is half as thought provoking and original as the first movie, I'm sure I'll see it several times in the theater.

This was a great movie, with the classic ending line: "Hey, tell me the truth... are we still in the game?" (said by a character with a gun pointed at his head)
The middle mind speaks!
My point, which you seem to support, is that it is not brilliantly-written science fiction, in spite of what thousands of drooling fanboys insist on claiming. The story is lame and poorly thought-out, and is only present to prop up the action sequences.
Information wants to be anthropomorphized.
...how do you know this?
since a healthy human body has only enough nutrients to feed one adult for about one week or so

There was a hint of this in some of the stories that were written and posted on the website shortly after the matrix came out.

You are all fuckfaced losers, the Matrix is a terrible movie. Keanu Reeves is a fucking moron, and you are gay for liking it.
