  1. With Regards to Source Code and Compilers on Microsoft Continues Anti-OSS Strategy · · Score: 1

Speaking only from experience here with respect to code I wrote. I remember compiling code on gcc/g++ Unix in 1997. Virtually none of it works/compiles correctly now. Specifically code which was developed with gcc2.95 back then. Quite a great deal of it has many issues with gcc4 now (maybe less with some 3.x.x - but still substantial). Flipside, I used Visual Studio 5 in NT4 to develop similar coding projects circa 1998. Transitioning to VS6 in ~2000 then VS7 lately has been *significantlty* easier. Even my horribly written MFC projects seem to load and "convert" rather well with minimal effort.

As a more personal opinion, I get frustrated when some minor API changes in libraries or ABI changes in compilers causes compilation road blocks. I find this more difficult in Linux/gcc than in Windows/VC++.

Furthermore, this is an 18 month contract and there is no certainty with what will happen after that. ... You say a "few" years. How many years might that be?

"beginning of the end of the desktop monopoly"? I seriously doubt that. If this works out for NZ and others follow suit, then that's great. However you need more than zeal and Orwellian references to bring down a monopoly.

  4. Barrier to Entry on How Amazon and Google are taking eBay's Business · · Score: 2, Informative

IMO Ebay has a high barrier to entry. To be successful at selling you must have a good track record, which is perfectly fine, but for those who need to sell 1 item or small items, forget about it. My example: purchased a webpad on Ebay, used it for ~2yrs. Then wanted a new one, but the only way to recover any cost was to sell the old one on Ebay. People emailed and said they couldn't afford the risk to buy from me since I had not sold anything so big. So I took a serious loss, but I had no choice if I really wanted it sold.

And on a more personal frustration, I abhor Paypal. I won't rehash all it's issues, but my basic question is if Ebay is owned by Paypal, why not make everything more transparent???? Why so many separate fees and deductions?

So if Google is working on a Paypal competitor, I CANNOT wait! As for buying from independent sellers on Amazon - I've never had any problems, and the whole process is pretty smooth. To give credit to Ebay: single best use of Ebay - buying second-hand CD's!!!

  5. FC4is okay so far on Fedora Core 4 Available · · Score: 2, Interesting

I used FC4-test3 for about a month just for testing purposes, and from the few hours I have used FC4-final, it doesn't look there are that many significant changes. The Release Notes and the "Installation Guide" are pretty good starting resources for some issues.

One major trouble I had was GCC4, playing around I found that many had problems compiling under GCC4, so I am wondering if many of the repositories (when they come online) will compile with GCC4 or GCC3.x? ... As a personal choice, I installed GCC3.4 to /opt and found it useful to keep a second compiler around for now. ... If anything, I imagine that many OSS projects will be forced to start looking into supporting GCC4.

As for speed and amazing things, not much really. I did notice that ACPI worked great on my A7V8X-X, which had been bugging me from FC2,3. I don't know how "amazing" the newer Gnome, OOo and other updates are.

SELinux took a huge enhancement and is integrated much tighter. No doubt some will find this annoying, but should be easy to disable.

I was disappointed some things moved to 'Extras' (xmms, xfce), but that's not necessarily bad. I would hate to have 6 cd's to download instead of 5.

Overall okay release so far. I'm sure there will be plenty of issues soon to arrive! There are some general installation notes I have on my website.

    • I've also had some font problems.
    • On pages with modified margins and tables, either the tables are shifted or some text around them gets shifted.
    • I also have bullet problems, sometimes I see 2 different types of bullets: 1 heavy, 1 light.
    • And since I was not a big MS fan, I used to use WordPerfect. Those documents are even worse. My images do not show up and my fonts get totally borked. The italics run off or there is a shrink/grow problem.
    • And if by chance coverted from WP -> Word then tried OO. Forget it, it is too much of a hassle to fix. Since I used WP5.1 for Dos, then moved to WP on Win, then Word2000, there are so many documents I may have converted.
Sadly with 13yrs of documents, I do not find OO as a possible replacement. And while I do see some progress in the current OO, I feel that I must have Windows around with both WP and Word to meet all my needs. (I'm using word processors available in 2000).
