AMD might be able to handle the load, but Apple probably don't want to risk it. They've been burned twice already in the last few years by companies that couldn't keep up with the needed quantity or speed increases. While AMD would definately be able to handle the speed increases Apple is probably worried they'll buy another dry well.

  4. Re:what?-Under pressure. on Using Cell Phones to Track Traffic · · Score: 1

Not every radio station has a chopper. They have to get their traffic info from somewhere. Some rely on people calling in information, some listen to other stations, etc.

While a cellphone counter might not be the best route, having a system to provide realtime traffic info is definately a good idea. The strategy would be to place some sort of automated realtime traffic sesnor around all of the major and secondary routes. This reduces dependency on choppers that might not go everywhere or people kind enough to call in.

Besides possibly providing info to the radio stations, people could hopefully have access to it. Say you want to go somewhere, but you want to plan out your root. Look at the traffic of the different routes and pick the best one. Sure, you could listen to the radio, but the traffic is looped slowly so by the time you hear the area you want you might be too close to change your plans. Then there's always the fact that some routes you may want to take aren't covered.

There are systems in place, but none are perfect. What we need is a simple and automated system we can place throughout the major and secondary roads/highways/etc.

When I needed to drive to college, my commute could range from 25 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic and weather. The quicker I can find out the information and/b the more I have access to, the better.

Well, I'm just guessing, perhaps they don't mean to physically re-wire the networks but completely change the data flow.

For example, it's highly probable that for privacy concerns they specifically set everything up so nobody in the home office can listen in on any calls. It makes sense, as in case of a security audit they can say "we don't have the ability to eavesdrop, check our infrastructure if you doubt us."

With this ruling they may have to allow feds access to a hub or something that will allow them to intercept all traffic and listen in on both sides. Skype would be a real pain in the but as they supposedly encrypt their transmissions. They'd need access to everyone's keys.

    But I'm just guessing here.

Right now you might be fine with your version of office suite and financial software but eventually they'll make them obsolute. Take Quicken for example, they've recently killed support of old software versions as well as file formats. You can't synchronize your online bank account with old versions now.

In this example, perhaps some other reader is getting a little annoyed by his laptop overheating, not but only a little. He doesn't feel like spending any real money on the solution as it's not a major problem. He reads the threads out of boredom and finds some simple or cheap solutions and decides to use them.

There are other examples of a person asking something I'd never even thought of. Reading the story and a few minutes later I'm considering doing something like that myself.

    You are correct. BUT...

The whole Blue-Ray cs HD-DBD think isn't just games, but movies. Everyone's waiting to see who wins so they can start printing Movies on the appropriate discs and start building Disc Players en-masse. Until the winner is decided our High-Def movies are in limbo.

Microsoft want's people to use their X-Boxes as more than just gaming rigs to increase sales. "Buy an X-Box 360 and watch High Def Movies!" But if they lose the format war then that's a major loss to the X-Box, as it goes from Home multimedia system to gaming system that can maybe play mp3s.

The problem is compounded by the fact that Microsoft is large and can throw TONS of money towards advertising and lobbying to make HD-DVD the format. While they may not win it will definately slow the whole process down.
