  1. Re:Correlation is not causation on Justice Not As Blind As Previously Thought · · Score: 1, Redundant

Thank you. I hate that every report/study/survey that comes out gets this tag or someone gets the +5 just as you said. We are all aware of this, but it does not always apply!

Someone could post a study 'finds putting hand in fire causes burns! and 5 minutes later someone will post the correlation!=causation tag regardless.

I'd like to see a report from a third party that could attempt to estimate how many of the downloads would have been real purchases had piracy not been a viable option. I can imagine lots of people download Photoshop because they can, even though all they are doing is touching up photos that Gimp could do just as well.

  3. Re:Hundreds of tabs?? on Mozilla Reveals Firefox 4 Plans · · Score: 1

I honestly would like to know who does this. I've heard a few users here post that they do similar things, but why? There's a point where it's simpler to have a bookmark like you said, not to mention the resources spent on all those tabs. And I don't care if you have 16Tb of memory, wasting resources like that would drive me nuts.

  4. Carry Them on How Do You Handle Your Keys? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I got tired of wearing holes in my pants from keys in general while moving PCs/servers while at client sites, so now I just carry everything except my wallet. Cell phone and keys in hand, so that I always know I have what I need. When you really need to, they go into the pockets of course, but getting in the habit of literally having them in hand means you always know where they are. It also forced me to reduce the keys I have by figuring out what I really needed to have _all_ the time, and what was just 'nice' to have.

  5. Fear it? on Pressure Mounts On ICANN To Approve .xxx Domain · · Score: 3, Interesting

A few people are saying that porn sites are going to be worried about being blocked. How much money do they make from the accidental viewings (ads potentially) vs people actively seeking out the sites and or signing up as members? It's not like I'm going to block .xxx at home and then be like 'WTF? Why can't I get to my porn?' The only people this would affect are those at jobs where it gets blocked (stop looking at work), or schools. At home do what you want. Block for your kids and not yourself.

The only problem I see is that plenty of malware providers/etc will continue to do their thing and promote their sites as able to avoid the .xxx filters, so come see us, and oops now you are infected. Legitimate porn sites aren't going to suffer. Members will still come to them and pay their monthly fees.

  6. Cleanliness on True Tales of Tech Hoarding · · Score: 1

It seems like cleanliness is the real decider. If you keep things organized, and maybe even labeled, people seem less inclined to complain or see it as a problem . If you have stuff shoved in a closet, or all over the floor, or just stacked randomly in the order that they entered your closet... well that's when it's a problem.

  7. Just like before on Google Preparing iPad Rival? · · Score: 1

This all seems very similar to when the iPhone came out. A lot of people bitched and complained about how it was junk and no one wanted it, then every phone manufacturer turned around and tried to create their own version. I can see this being exactly the same way. For whatever reason you want to come up with (poor decisions, no business clout, no innovation, etc) companies do the same thing over and over, and we get lulled into more of the same. Smart phones were stagnating and pretty poor in some cases, then Apple came along with a really well designed phone. No one made any progress in the tablet market, and Apple comes along with something well designed.

Once again, everyone will complain, but if this is correct, we'll be seeing people coming out were more versions of tablet systems running a non-desktop OS. But everyone will still complain that Apple didn't contribute at all.

I know I probably sound like a fanboy (I am to some extent), but I always find it odd that a lot of technical people can't understand that 90% of the world are just users, and want something nice that just works and looks cool.

  11. What comparison? on Facebook Attracting More Visitors Than Google.com · · Score: 0

I don't know why they make the comparison, as if somehow Facebook is replacing Google. They serve different purposes. People may need to use Google a few times a day to locate information, but they'll hit FB every hour? every 15 minutes? Depends on the person, but the conclusion they seem to draw, that we are using the internet differently, seems an odd one. Unless they are trying to just comment that more people are using social networking sites than before?

  12. GPUs on Blazing Fast Password Recovery With New ATI Cards · · Score: 4, Interesting

This isn't the first story about how crazy fast GPUs are for crunching. I know very little about that level of hardware, but why aren't we incorporating these types of things into CPUs? Is the coding/assembly so different that it doesn't translate? Do they only do certain kinds of processing really well (it is a GPU after all), so it couldn't handle other more 'mundane' OS needs?

Trying to keep up with some profs who are scribbling madly on the chalk/whiteboard, or just droning on and on. Stuff gets written down with little or no thought so it can be studied later. I'd be happier having it in a nice doc I can search while reading my books or through other pages of notes. They just don't like the fact that their audience isn't as mentally trapped if they are boring or unable to retain student attention.

Because I have a large wide screen TV attached to my consoles at home, multiple computers in my house running multiple OS'es, a DS, a PSP, an iPod Touch, and yes a MAME cabinet. I don't need my phone to play any games. I barely use my iPod Touch to play games, and that seems crazy to some people. Maybe because I'm a 'serious' gamer (as named by various media and/or gaming companies) as opposed to all this talk of 'casual' gaming. If you want real gaming, toss your DS or whatever in your car, or grab a backpack/messenger bag/stylish-bag-of-your-choice and pop it in. I carry my Blackberry and iPod around without problem.

Clearly I need more caffeine or something. And get off my lawn. Damn, when did I get old?

I agree with skipping the camera. I'm actually surprised how many people seem to think this is an issue. And I'm still not sure what they are thinking they will do with it. I'm assuming they don't mean a cam for taking pictures like a phone does, and I'm not sure how many people are planning on web conferencing from this. It's designed to be held and used, so are they thinking they'll hold it the whole time while cam'ing with people? And if you set it on the desk with the keyboard for webcam/chatting, then you may as well just have a laptop or netbook.

  23. A nice option on iPad Is a "Huge Step Backward" · · Score: 1

I hear a lot of people saying that why buy it if you already have an iPhone, but a lot of people don't have one. I have a Blackberry that my company makes me use, and an iPod Touch I use for music and surfing the web from the couch. This is a perfect upgrade for that type of device. Larger screen, still has WiFi, has bluetooth, and potentially 3G for when I don't have a wireless signal to hop on to. It also makes me ponder eBooks since most people I know don't want to purchase a stand alone eBook reader from Amazon/B&N/etc. I'm not looking at this as a replacement for my laptop, or desktop, or gaming console. I see it as a 'hmmm, that might be able to replace what I use my iPod Touch' for. Obviously it's not as easy as tossing it in my pocket, but that's the trade off for a larger screen.

What's going on?'. It's easier with print media since the 'important' things are right there on the front page, but when you tailor your news sites around one or two topics, you can't help but miss other important events in the world.
