You don't need to go digging for million year old fossils to know that evolution is a fact. It happens. We see it around us constantly.

We have sped up evolution for our own purposes: selective breeding.
We have slowed it down for our own purposes: again, selective breeding.
We have seen species develop into "other thans" in the last 200 years.

So, I ask, with all humility, why the hell are we still trying to find evidence of evolution when we already have it?

Seriously, isn't it about time that we made cracking/virus creation/etc crimes carry a very stiff sentence?

It's not just about recouping losses, it is about making the criminals - and that IS what these people are - fear the consequences of creating this type of thing. It seems like almost every day some new exploit is announced and we all have to check systems, hope for a quick patch, worry about exposure, yada yada yada. I'm fed up with it as I'm sure most other admins are.

Get caught creating a virus? 50 years in prison.
You run a botnet? 50 years in prison.
You cracked into the Defense Department? Life in prison.

We need to stop slapping these a-holes on the wrist and make the punishment severe enough to deter at least SOME of them.

The GP wasn't talking about "mixing" bits of songs together, he was talking about "combining" music collections from several iPods.

I haven't found this to be difficult with iTunes, it just takes a little time getting all the files onto a single computer then dragging them to the iPod after you connect it. Make sure that you do not have auto-update turned on and there should be no problem.

Ah, sorry. That does pose an interesting point. I guess it would depend upon the defintion of the point of infraction, i.e., do you apply the community standard of the speaker's location or of the audience's location?

For example - and I believe this has been discussed previously - a person creates a web posting that is housed in one state and is perfectly legal, but is ILlegal in another state. Should the poster be punished for posting material that is legal in his/her state or should the reader that sought out the offending post suffer under his/her state's law?

One of my high school teachers used a method that worked very well for the students: discussion.

He would lead a discussion of the topic by prompting questions and answers from the students. During the discussion, he would create (on the chalkboard) a running outline of the topics with some details, but not EVERYTHING we talked about. As he wrote on the board, we students wrote in our notebooks, and then went back to the discussion.

I learned more from this method than any other I have used since.

Mr. U., your teaching methods kicked ass!
