Some people had the problem with 80 GB firewire drives. At the present it is not known what is causing the problem with some firewire drives. No distinct pattern as emerged as far as drive size, manifacturer, firewire chipset, etc. goes. It seems Apple is investigating the issue as some people who were affected by the problem were contacted by Apple. I think it's perfectly legitimate for a language to have new words for new technologies/items and use words proper to the language rather than import words from other languages. That's what it is to be living language.
English is pretty open into importing/incorporating any words (even abbreviations like WMD) in the language, but I don't believe most other languages on Earth are.
I don't understand software development based on market share rather than on profit.
Seems to me the market share doesn't matter as long as you can turn a profit. Sure the return on investment is lower on a smaller market share, however as long as you make money on that product, why does it matter?
The business decision should be: will my sales be superior to my costs, if the answer is yes, then it should be worthwhile to make the product.
Have you guys watched Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine movie? (the movie is not so much about guns as about fear IMO, but it's still an interesting watch)
The US is the country with the most death by firearms and the most firearms per inhabitant.
Doesn't seem like firearms make for a safer country.
As for protecting your freedom, how does it protect you against DMCA and all the freedom restrictions of the homeland security laws/bills/acts?
Doesn't seem like firearms make for a country with more freedom either.
I feel safer when travelling/living in Canada or in Europe than when travelling/living in the US.
(G) whether the violation was intended to or had the effect of significantly interfering with or disrupting a critical infrastructure; and (H) whether the violation was intended to or had the effect of creating a threat to public health or safety, or injury to any person;...
So if Joe sends an email to Jane and for some reason that email trigger some weird bugs that somehow cause some shitty system to go down and that system going down cause G or H then you can get life imprisonment for sending an email?
Ok that exemple is a bit extreme, but still, given how everthing is/can be interconnected through computers who knows how much unintended effects can result from some interraction with buggy software.
The specs of the Apple Remote Desktop don't mention any security / encryption, yet they suggest using it over the internet. How secure is it? Are the streams of data encrypted? Or is only the authentication secure?
Some of you might know as it seems to be a new version of Apple Network Assistant which is part of AppleShareIP.
(BTW this is much more than VNC or Timbuktu, it has lots of administration features, like mirroring HDs, etc. the remote display is just the tip of the iceberg.)
Actually the dual G4 1GHz power Mac which deliver 15 gflop (http://www.apple.com/powermac/) is $3000 at the apple store. For 1 tflop you need 67 of them, that's $201,000. The difference is now only $41,000.
Integrating tons of features (camera, DVD drive, etc.) in the display might seem cool, but what if one of those parts break? You need to make do without your screen, uncool.
Plus the costs of having the DVD drive, etc. in the monitor will drive price probably way up.
Of course if you are going the integration way, why stop halfway? why not have the whole PC inside the display... wooops we get the long rumored LCD iMac, don't we?:) (as for the people wanting extra PCI cards or ATA devices, there are external firewire ATA bridge/enclosure and PCI chassis... of course, it drives the price up.)
In 1989, at the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, Berners-Lee first proposed a "global hypertext project" to be known as the World Wide Web.
I guess the USA didn't invent everything, eh? (And where does Linus come from again?:)
Science and technology is a big collaborative developpement between people from many nations and it feels really silly to have to mention this here.
As mentioned on MacCentral IBM just released some PowerPC G3 bundling all their recent breakthroughs and going up to 1 GHz.
"SOI and SiLK taken together with IBM's smallest 0.13-micron copper manufacturing process has resulted in a processor that typically dissipates 3.6W of power at 800MHz [...]"

Actually if you have an Apple monitor the power light of the monitor fades in and out during sleep mode and it does it in synch with the desktop power light (I think it's synching through USB)
That's quite a sense of detail.
The problem is not with any size barrier.

Actually there are lots of linguists in Quebec that works hard at defining French words for a lot of things that didn't have one.

Previously one had to use 3rd party plugins such as that from Adobe, and they only worked on windows.
/ main.html
The Adobe plug-in works fine on MacOS 9 and MacOS X.
There are even betas for Red Hat Linux and Solaris 8, though I have no idea how they fare.

Law abiding citizens are safe from all those new laws, right?
Unless someone in power decides to go after you (out of malice or as a mistake.)

How about making a .kid TLD for kids-safe sites?
I suspect there are more non-kids-safe sites than kids-safe ones, so that would be an easier move.
In Canada you can legally borrow an audio CD from someone and make a copy for yourself. Hence the tax on blank media to compensate for that.

We mostly use PGP for VPN access at work, when will GPG have such feature (if ever) ?

2500 is actually fairly inexpensive for a 22" LCD with 1600x1024 resolution. The other LCDs with that kind of res (1600x1200 and more) are 5000+
By the time our TV signals reach the aliens we will all be dead from pollution :) Or maybe the sun will have gone nova.
;)
Of course, maybe the aliens already know all about it! Didn't they get Elvis already?
Excellent, that's exactly what I wanted to know ;)
