Especially now, since the price of the XP processors are ever increasing. For less than $150 I can get a Duron 1200 and a very capable companion motherboard, the ECS K7S5A. For $65 after shipping from Newegg.com (No, I have no vested interests in Newegg, I just like their customer support and shipping), you get a solid performing, stable, compatable motherboard with built in Sound and Lan. Nothing to scoff at. It even has overclockability using such programs as CPUFSB. The Durons are a great family, I think I may go ahead and get one now :)

I was impressed with QNX, stable, fast, easy to setup(auto-detection on all hardware, unlike some operating systems I know...), quake3 ran :D, etc. However, what finally killed QNX for me was the sheer lack of decent applications. Sure it had phirc, abiword, phplay, etc, but those are no substitute for mirc, MS Word, winamp, etc. In the end I ended up dumping QNX, it is ment for embedded systems(Audrey) where it does well, but it simply is not a good desktop OS.

Speaking of cheap systems, does anyone know how overclockable the new Duron is? I'm almost tempted to buy one and another K7S5A and bump the FSB up to 133. A 1600MHz DuronXP(might as well call it that) should compete nicely with an Athlon XP 1900+, and at little more than 1/3 the price.

SIS has restored my faith in AMD. The ECS K75SA motherboard is only $64 after shipping and works with any Socketed Athlon/Duron cpu. It is fast and stable, accepts DDR and SDR, built in networking and sound(ok, AC'97 isn't that great), a real winner. You can build a 1GHz system and only pay $120 for the cpu, heatsink/fan, and mobo.

...great for pirates. Seriously. The GameCube HAD an excellent antipiracy mechanism. Now all HK has to do is crack the disc, distrobution is no longer and issue.

Nintendo made an excellent decision as far as anti-piracy goes with the disc size. I personally love them. I have a feeling that the majority of Q purchases are going to be for the purpose of pirating the games in the near future.

Because of the price of the Q, I don't see piracy becomming a big deal. We know that there must be some heavy profit on each Q sold. This is probably to offset the potential piracy that Nintendo expects to occur.

The only reason we even see a Panasonic Q is because Panasonic probably cut Nintendo a deal on the drives that are in every GameCube.

  13. A few points to make... on Magnetic Space Launches · · Score: 3, Insightful
Hopefully, we can reduce the weight of the fuel and oxidizer that's needed to be carried on board the vehicle and that will decrease the size of the vehicle," said NASA scientist Kenneth House. "So hopefully, we could get more payload into space with less of the fuel."

They want to reduce the fuel needed. Meaning the launch vehicles will have to do some thrust by themselves, but not nearly as much.

Also, some people have noted that g-forces would be a problem. Not likely, if we angle the vehicle at a 45-degree starting angle we drastically reduce the ammount of g-forces needed.

Another point, the maglev system is frictionless. The LV is at no time during the launch touching the track. You've seen bullet-trains, right? Same consept. This further reduces the work needed to launch a vehicle.

I do see this system working. It will probably be 10 years or so, but it will work.

Now understand I know very little in the approach, but from what I gather, microkernal operating systems run all drivers as services. You can actually kill your keyboard, sound, disk access, etc. driver with a simple kill command. This also allows easy portabliity and scalability because all of your drivers are not IN the kernel code itself, but external programs.

So tell me, what advantages/disadvantages does this have over QNX? QNX may be closed source, but it is free for home use. I really would like to know how this stacks up against QNX, in which I was actually able to play Quake3, WITH SOUND! Oh, and QNX sets-up and configures everything on my system, AND WORKS, you cant get much better than that.

Something about HURD that doesn't make sense to me. One gigabyte partitions and FOUR distro cds. Now lets say each CD only uses 512megs. That is two gigabytes. Something here strike you as odd?

Anyways, I am really not an avid linux person, after attempting to install debian(video setup, ARGH!!), mandrake(VNC would stop the system from finishing boot), and darwin(ok, that was stupid to even try). Things like QNX and Windows 9x/2k just work. So Windows9x is unstable, at least I can get it installed with my eyes shut.
