Him using multi-cpus denotes multi-threaded applications, therefore more cpus is better than less cpus. He might have found at LEAST a 20% increase in performance simply by using a p4 with HT.
I think he starts off well talking about the decision making process, the move over x86, what ECC means.
However, he pretty much dumps his chosen hardware in our laps by the end of the article without much explanation. It feels rushed almost.
There is way more out there than Tyan, who cares what google uses. What about dual channel DDR? What about the fact that Xeons and newer P4s have HyperThreading?
He starts slow, then in a few paragraphs blurts out some mystery hardware he decided to go with. Then babbled about Geforce VS Quadro for the rest of the article.

The more leftist they get.. the more they alienate many of their readers.
Heh.. ok now that my rant is over... What if Sun goes under? This could be a good thing. What if the java platform became GPL ? I think this is an important distinction to make.
Perhaps the only thing holding back the Java platform is sun holding onto it.
Could someone PLEASE explain to me what the big deal is with this realserver.
If from what I can tell is that it serves up streaming RealVideo, then I don't really see why this is so terrific.
I remember ignoring the last 500 sites that had videos in RealPlayer only format simply cuz it's the most annoying thing in the world to install on your Windows PC. God damn thing hoggs memory, sits in your system tray for eternity... etc..
Wouldn't it be just as easy to have a windows media object in your webpage.

That probably won't work for music/dvds etc.. People NEED to watch new movies and listen to the latest CDs.
Otherwise the american population will quickly realise how boring life is, stop being good consumers, and throw the nation deeper into an economic slide until we become part of the axis of evil:)

Every company needs some sort of motivation for creating Open Source software.
I'd hate to state the obvious, but if you want to make the opensource community attractive... there needs to be money involved somehow.
RedHat charges for support, some charge for documentation. Aside from the hobbiests out there, you expect large companies to throw away time and money into opensource, and getting NOTHING in return by making everything 100% free?

I'm baffled that more people aren't suggesting this, but if they want such a short timeframe... then they should be pay for it.
And that means you need to get extra programmers working with you. Do a little sub-contracting if necessary.
That could easily speed up the process. Especially if you write modular code.

Even more annoying is management usually falls for it.
Again and again MS has accused the Open Source movement as being anti-capitolist.
But the more I heard about Palladium, and "Trusted" applications, and creating a standard that forces palladium on consumers.
The more I realise the strategy of protecting the corperation from the consumer is what's to blame.
Again and again laws are created that assume all consumers are criminals, and that companies need to be protected by the government.
I guess you have to ask yourself.... is capitolism failing us? Or is the spirit of capitolism gone, and it is we that have failed capitolism?
