  1. I am quite *pleased* on Slippery Slime Developed to Control Crowds · · Score: 2

I'm glad that this research is being done! So what, the government is trying to handle riots in a safer, better way. If anything, this will encourage peaceful protests and deter harmful ones.

They aren't "silencing critics" they're protecting violent mobs from themselves and the police who deal withthem, all to save *you* personal and finacial harm.

It doesn't matter what your politics are, if you're violent, you deserve to face the consequences. Personally, being slimed wouldn't be as bad as bullets.

  2. An Alternative? Oh geeze on More Mayhem From MSFT's Mundie · · Score: 2

I can't believe that this guy keeps creating these preposterous statements. In the academic community he'd be shot down and discredited so fast that his head would spin. Why can't the rest of the population see him the same way?

  3. The user interface should Be better on BeOS For Linux · · Score: 1, Interesting

  4. Typical cursory opinion on Designer Babies, Version 1.0 · · Score: 2

You go on, but your point is pretty incoherent. Let me address several of your points: 1. This is the best type of natural selection. You say it "goes against" it, but this is the most aggressive type of weeding out bad genes. I can assume you mean that "naturla forces" should decide which traits are bad and not the parents, but you don't explicitely say this. 2. The issue here isn't government intervention. What if the governemnt waited for children to be born and *then* killed "undesireable" ones? It's a pretty stupid postulation, since it's simply not happening. 3. Adoption. There's a huge difference between being infertile, and potentailly passing a debilitating disease onto a child. Yes, there are many children up for adoption. But that doesn't mean someone wanting to have a biological child can't. Anyways, wouldn't adopting be going against natural selection in a MAJOR way? Some things to think about...

  6. Not a major change, but a good one! on (Another) Cut of Blade Runner · · Score: 2

From the interview, it seems the only actual video editing (ie, taking stuff out/putting it in) will be sot shorten the scenes with the voice over. He does make a good point, why would Ford be staring up at a ballon with no voiceover? He's just removing/shortening scenes that were purposefully lenghtened for something that's not there anymore.

  7. It's a sad thing.. on PressPlay and MusicNet vs. Artists · · Score: 4, Insightful

It seems the only way that we'll break out of the cycle of recording companies ripping off artists are to bancrupt them. And that means hard times for recording artists while a new economy is built to support them.
I do think that file sharing is a good thing, but it is also destructive to the current economic structure of the music industry. But, with change comes pain.

That's his response. The things that changed my mind:
1.Using C#/CLI allows GNOME to suppotr many more programming languages much more easily.
    2. .NET allows us to ditch the "bad" code that has been generated by patching and updating old libraries, etc. It's a potential fresh start that could be very improtant in the long run.
    3. Memory protection. Like Java, it handles garbage collection and related issues very well.

I suggest to anyone to read the above URL, it's very informative.

What *I* want are "pocket" ie small books with clear-cut examples of useable code. I switch between Perl, C, C++, Java, etc all the time, and it get frustrating when you forget a certain syntax or way of doing something. Either ONE book with lots of basic syntax examples, or many small books for each language!

I know LOTS of CS students who would buy them.

  24. Re:Why replace it? simple... on Bob Young says Linux won't rule the desktop · · Score: 2

No, of course windows has improved. And so has Linux, and MacOS (as well as other developing OSes like qnx, Mac OSX, BeOS, etc).

My point was that the "good enough" theory to development, ie "Why should we try to make Linux a desktop OS when Windows is Good Enough?" is a flawed question, not only one that shouldn't be answered, but one that shouldn't be asked.

  25. Why replace it? simple... on Bob Young says Linux won't rule the desktop · · Score: 5, Insightful

Complacency leads to regression. If we aren't always striving to make things better, everything will deteriorate. With a strong Linux desktop push, the price of competing software (Windows and MacOS) will drop, features will increase, and everyone will be better off.
