For starters, it was on a winblows environment (at least in the beginning).
Mostly though, we were not given the time, and we were not allowed to work on un-approved projects.

Besides, can your really script the ass hat of a lead dev changing RDS images / instances without telling you?
Scripting is no help for the cloud going down either, not to mention connectivity issues.

In short, I am happy to be outta there, that could have possibly been the worst communicating "team" I have ever had the displeasure of working with.

  5. Don't do it. period. on Ask Slashdot: Do Any Development Shops Build-Test-Deploy On A Cloud Service? · · Score: 2, Informative

We did this at my last job.
    In short, it sucked.

    More descriptive: It really sucked!
The boss didn't want to manage servers in house to save costs. So as a developer, we had to show up every day, boot our cloud instance up, sync the latest code to that instance, and begin development. Then before going home, you needed check in your code, shut down the instance, and go home.

Doesn't sound so bad, except for the time you had to waste EVERY DAY logging into AWS, booting the EC2 instance, restoring the RDS instance, syncing the code, doing basic readiness tests BEFORE you could even begin working.
Then there was always the fun part of the dev team leader changing out which RDS instance you needed to use, and forgetting to tell you about it.

Not to mention the time you (the developer) had to waste every day shutting down (syncing / checking in code, creating snapshots, closing RDS instances down, etc, etc, etc).

Then there is always the fun times when the cloud was down (yes, it DOES happen people!) or the internet connection was down (ISP issue, internal LAN issues, etc)... All of the time wasted managing the cloud instances (starting up, shutting down each day) could of been spent actually fixing things, and writing code, but I guess that wasn't cost effective enough for them.

I was just forced into wasting an entire day "documenting" what has been done for a project so far because the manager was too lazy just to ask me what had been done, and why it isn't working yet.

Probably never read the doc, and will end up asking me about it anyways...

A Couple month ago, my wife asked me to make our sons name out of LEGO to hang on the wall in his room.

I had so many requests from friends to make them / get instructions, I ended up making a website to customize them yourself:

    "Take it or Leave it"?

I would choose to leave it. Apple products, while "cool" and "neat" for the individual user, don't often work well in large enterprise environments.
This is just a fact of life.
Until better management tools are made to "manage" the apple devices / environment, they will still be a secondary (or greater) choice for enterprise environments.

  19. Another way to "steal" their music on Metallica to Star in Next Major Guitar Hero? · · Score: 1

This is a feature that MUST be part of this game since it is featuring Metallica:

As you know, (right now) as you play through the Guitar Hero games, your character earns money for playing songs successfully.

There are also purchasable items (songs) in the "in-game" store, but for the Guitar Hero: Metallica, all the songs should just be in there for looks, you never "earn" enough money to buy them......

This is where Neversoft needs to partner with Rockstar Games.
Put some of the Grand Theft Auto gameplay in this game so you can "steal" things (like new songs) from the in-game store.

And when you get caught by the in-game Metallica lawyers, you have to pay them off.

I'm sure this would make both Metallica happy AND the mafIAA happy!

  20. GH: World Tour Rock Band (especially Wii revs) on New Guitar Hero Drumset Showcased · · Score: 0, Flamebait
As many previous posters have said, Whoremonix is totally screwed when it comes to the Wii version comparisons.

I wish I had mod points today because I could use them all on this article alone!

The Wii IS the most popular current gen console right now. What it lacks for in graphics, it more than makes up for in other features.

For Whoremonix to try and pass off them Wii Rock Band game like they are is an absolutely pathetic joke. Nintendo should revoke their software license for that garbage. The abortion called Wii Rock Band has:
    No Online
    No Controller compatability
    No DLC
    No World Tour Mode

I could keep going on with Whoremonix mistakes with the Wii version, but I'll stop for now...

Activision has seen this, and they are putting the resources in to make the Wii version a real, and complete version that it should be.

To reply to some of the complaints - No Wii Hard Drive, only 512MB memory:
--SD Cards! Ever heard of them? 2GB can be had for about $10 is you shop around a little bit. That would easily hold almost all the DLC I would buy.

Someone (Troll) mentioned only MONO sound in the Wii GH:3
--True, the release day disc did play in mono sound on a Dolby (pro logic ii) surround system. I'm pretty sure you could turn down the settings to just Stereo, and actually play it that way. Or, for FREE, you can also return the disc to Activision, and they will replace it with a re-mastered disc. You even got a FREE faceplate for you Guitar Controller too.
Pretty sure also, that any copy of GH:3 you buy in a store today, has the re-mastered (surround sound) disc.

  21. Got mine yesterday! on The DS Lite U.S. Launch · · Score: 1

I went to Circuit City at 10am (opening) yesterday, and picked mine up. Also picked up 4 games (Brain Age, Tetris DS, Mario Kart, Super Mario DS). I would not have bought so many, but I had a few gift cards to various stores. I was surprised when I went to Best Buy late in the afternoon that there were still a couple DS Lite's sitting on the shelves considering the number of people who were at Circuit City buying one in the morning.

Having never played the Fat DS, I am very impressed with the games, and some of the unique control methods that the touchscreen allows for. I keep having to fight with my girlfriend to get some playing time, as she is addicted soduko (comes with Brain Age).

I am probably going to end up having to buy her one so I can actually play mine.

No thank you, I will keep my current Satellite Tivo, which I own, and can do whatever I want with (like upgrade the hard drive, add web interface, etc..)

Now if I could purchase the Tivo from Cox for X amount of dollars, and the unit supported HD TV recording, I would maybe consider it.

  23. My Cingular setup on Cell Phones for Laptop Users? · · Score: 1

I've had an unlimited internet plan on my cel phone for a couple years now through Cingular ($20 a month). It has only been at GPRS & EDGE speeds in my area during that time, but 3G is now available in several area's around me. Hopefully it will be in my area soon, but for now the EDGE speeds are fast enough.

I just use my Bluetooth adapter on my laptop to connect to my Bluetooth cel phone. Formerly a Moto v600, and now an LG CU320 (3G). Once paired with my laptop it appears as a Bluetooth modem, and the laptop thinks it is just a regular dial-up connection. It works pretty well. I have used it all over the place, even (as a passenger) riding down the freeway at 80mph.

Cingular even has some connection manager software to help you setup the connection, but you don't need it if you know what your doing (Not sure if they have Mac software though).
