The report mentioned many things that we already know. But there's one important thing about the Open Source software the report may have missed:-
The freedom to change / customize the software via the source code.
People can argue that even Windoze can be customized - background, for example - but it ain't the same as cusomization via source code.
Do you ever have the feeling, when you use commercial / close-source software, that some part of it are kinda stupid, cumbersome, or simply plain assinine ?
Do you ever think that if you _just_ have the source code, perhaps you could do some change to it, at least to better suit your taste ?
Well... With Open Source, we can.
Now, of course, not every one know how to code, and even fewer of us know how to tweak the code to our own liking. But that doesn't change the point that with Open Source, we _can_ change the software anyway we like it.
It's a feeling of having TOTAL CONTROL over the software.
It's a feeling of empowerment.
It's just _the_ thing close-sourced software users don't get to enjoy.
Even when they're NOT in international waters, the so-called "legality" is just as blurred.
What's "piracy" anyway ?

BSA in Malaysia lauched a "public stunt" - a supposingly "all out campaign to stamp out piracy".

I called to report a shop which sells used computers, at the rate of almost 100 units a week.
The used computers the shop sells came from US or Europe, and the computers are supposed to be sold WITHOUT any OS installed.
The company that I reported to BSA does sell the used computer WITH MS-Windows installed, and they CHARGED their customer "service fee" for the installation.
The copies of MS-Windows that company installed in the used computer are all PIRATED, that was why I called BSA.
Not because I love BSA or Microsoft, but because I dislike piracy, period.
I called BSA back in July. More than 2 months has passed, NO ACTION, and during which time, that company has sold almost 1000 units of the used computer - and consequently the have profitted from their "service charged" of installing more than 1000 copies of MS-Windows, Autocad and other softwares.
BSA always filed formal complaint to the Malaysian government allerging that "rampant piracy" is not checked. But in my case, BSA does NOTHING even after I gave them the name, address, phone number of the company that engages in piracy of commercial software.
Don't blame the Malaysia public for piracy of software is BSA doesn't do anything even after having the informations of software pirates.
Them chinky ostriches will say anything to make China looks good.
They will say that China never need anything from abroad, they can invent everything. In fact, that ostrich that you replied to was implying to the world that China's space program is 100% indigenous, without parts nor ideas from abroad.

I had the priviledge to witness Pentium 5 in action. When compared to the 2.8 GHz Pentium 4, Pentium 5 (also 2.8 GHz) ran at least 20% faster !
Now let's hope that AMD will do something about the front side bus, and turning up the heat on Intel.

Now, to remedy the situation, Intel should come up with Pentium V (which will be on the market starting Jan 03, guaranteed !), Intel should start the Pentium V with 2.8 GHz, while the Pentium IV reaches 3.3 to 3.5 GHz range.
In that way, Intel can not be accused of false advertising and so on.
So let's wait until this coming January. Let's hope that Pentium V (at 2.8 GHz) runs faster than Pentium IV (at 3.3 GHz).

I am living in an gawd awful Moslem country where the Net access are tightly controlled - you need to have "ISP license" here - and if you are NOT one of them Moslem sleazeballs, you won't even get the license.
Isn't there already something from a recent "Hacker Convention" (or something sounding more omninous) that can aid the user to circumvate state censorships ?
Sorry I don't remember exactly which "convention" is it, nor the name of the "stuff" (mebbe a program, mebbe a suggestion or an on-going project).

A hundred years from now, people may not know what a ".ps" file format is.
But I am sure, somewhere, somehow, some machine(s) still runs gnu / linux codes.
The damage claim is essentially this:
When user A bought Pentium IV, based on
Intel's claim that 1.4 GHz Pentium IV is
much faster than 1.26 Pentium III, when
in actuality 1.26 Pentium III is faster,
user A of course felt cheated.
Now, to remedy the situation, Intel should come up with Pentium V (which will be on the market starting Jan 03, guaranteed !), Intel should start the Pentium V with 2.8 GHz, while the Pentium IV reaches 3.3 to 3.5 GHz range.
In that way, Intel can not be accused of false advertising and so on.
So let's wait until this coming January. Let's hope that Pentium V (at 2.8 GHz) runs faster than Pentium IV (at 3.3 GHz).
I have insider news that Intel is prepared to do just that.
