    The college time table does not work that well for people who are working

    Not only that, for many people who are NOT from the United States of America, going to college often is an impossible dream.

    The MOOC at least offer them a chance to try out.

    Even the so-called high failure rate of the enrolled students shouldn't be alarming.

    The MOCC enable MANY MORE a venue for them to better themselves - while some of them might fail, most of them will try and try and try again, just like that old choo-choo which kept on trying, until finally they reach their goal.

    It really saddens me to see so many people see the world with the viewpoint of the FIRST WORLD while most of the world population are certainly not getting to enjoy the many conveniences / privileges the first world people get but never realize.

    I do invest in startups and most of the angel investors that I know are not dumb.

    That guy is running a publicity stunt.

    Transparency can only work up to a point before jealousy creeps in.

    There is no way to run an organization with 100% transparency - people will start comparing each others' workload (and/or contribution) with the salary figure.

    The art of managing is an ART and it's a very delicate task.

    Calling it "fraud" is a stretch. Saying "potentially endangered lives" is a wildly fanciful leap of hyperbole.

    While I agree that what Dr. Han did was not "endangering lives", you gotta tell us what about the $19 million grant that he got because he falsified his test data ?

    Dr. Han has cheated. No matter how high that guy has achieved in his academic study, he has failed something much more important than scholarly status - he does not have even one iota of moral cell in his body.

    But I sense something terribly wrong in the set-up at Iowa State U.

    You see, Dr. Han's immediate superior is Dr. Michael Cho, and as the supervisor of Dr. Han, Dr. Cho has failed to keep a close eyes on the researches being carried out by his subordinates.

    And while Dr. Han has had his wrist slightly slapped (only ban for 3 year). Dr. Cho, the boss, never was reprimanded for his own dereliction of duty.

    Yes, I do have a FB account. I signed on to FB when it was brand new (just like I sign on to /. when it was brand new) but I do not like what people do there --- they TELL EVERYBODY EVERYTHING ABOUT THEMSELVES.

    I am not interested to know who eat what at where, nor interested to tell anyone what I do at what place in what time either.

    I logged on to my FB account for 2 times since I signed on. Yes, exactly two times, and no more.

    As I have said, I have mixed with a lot of people from different groups , which includes people whom you described as "far-right nut jobs" and also those from the opposite side, those in the super-far-left-field that will accuse anybody who disagree with them with "hate speech" "hate thought" "hate-anything".

    But I gotta tell ya, those "far-right nut jobs" are basically very patriotic Americans.

    They truly LOVE America.

    I came from China.

    As a naturalized American Citizen who is not a Christian nor a Muslim, and one who has been in the USA since the early 1970's, and one who has mixed with a lot of very different groups of folks, I can tell you one thing ---

    The *MOST DANGEROUS GROUP OF PEOPLE* inside the United States of America are former Christians who have converted into Islam.

    I have friends from the Middle Eastern countries (most of them have American citizenship). While most of them are Muslims, only a few amongst them are zealots.

    Because I do mix well with the Muslims (I speak Arabic, btw) many of them introduced me to their "newly converts" (they want to convert me too, so they introduce the newly converts trying to convince me that converting into Islam is a *good thing*) and upon talking to those "newly converts" I can sense their zeals oozing out of very pore of their skin.

    Some of the "newly converts" are so zealous that they actually praise those 19 terrorists who carried out the 9/11 WTC bombing as "martyrs"!!

    You guys in America, especially those who never know Islam, do not know the danger in your own community.

    Terrorism is irrelevant. Whether the programs work or not is irrelevant. All that matters is whether or not it's constitutional, and it's not.

    I am an American and I do share your concern.

    But I am a naturalized American, not one who was born inside the United States of America.

    As a naturalized American, I get to see America from both outside in and inside out.

    What I see right now is a very discouraging view.

    It's not an "if", but a matter of "when" - The Constitution itself has been proved too cumbersome for the BIG BROTHER and sooner or later the Constitution itself will be ruled "ILLEGAL".

    You may laugh at my prediction - but I came from a very repressive country and I have a first hand experience of living under BIG and very OPPRESSIVE BROTHER, and the only thing that has managed to stop the United States of America from falling into the abyss of TOTALITARIANISM is the Constitution.

    Thus, the Constitution and the accompanying Bill of Rights have proven to be way too cumbersome and troublesome for the BIG BROTHER.

    Today we still get to talk about NSA and what NSA has done because the Constitution is still legal - and that's one of the reason why the BIG BROTHER wants to do away with that document.

    BIG BROTHER does not believe in "We, the People". They only believe in "WE, the Master".

    Sort of: they use torrenting stats to work out what's popular and acquire licences to stream it.

    Netflix, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and many others, are actively looking for fresh talents in the same pool as me.

    Yes, I am constantly looking for talents.

    But unlike them, I do not look for "A Players".

    No matter if the "A" is of the academic or of "Type A personality", people do change, with time.

    What I look for are the self-starters - and I have found plenty of self-starters, both from America and from elsewhere in the world.

    What is ridiculous in this "talent race" is that those who are doing the hiring do not even have any idea what they are looking for.

    It's so very easy to say "I look for 'A'" but often they end up with people who may have a pretty resume but ain't those who will do things ON THEIR OWN without being told to.

    Even the startups that I invest in I look for self-starters.

    People may have really cool ideas but if they are NOT of the self-start type, ideas will forever stay IDEAS, and will never become a reality.

    I don't do much of this sort of thing anymore but there was a time when I tried to look inside every file on my computer, telnet to every host available just to learn everything I could about this wonderful new tool that had come into my grasp. I sometimes miss those days and that guy, but now I tire easily and kind of just want everything to work.

    I do feel what you are feeling.

    As we get older we get more easily tired. But that doesn't mean I will rest more just because I get tired.

    On the contrary - I push myself harder simply because I get more easily tired.

    Only by doing so I get things to even out - maybe I am not as fast and as sharp, in both physical sense and in mental state, but as I push myself harder, I will do more in the same 24 hours allocated to me every single day.

    Why should I let the young uns having all the fun ?

    Why should I let my scopes be idle just because I tell myself "oh, I'm tired now, I can test that thing tomorrow" ?

    If I need to find out something, I don't waste time debating with myself whether I should do that thing or not - I just go ahead and do it.

    That's how I live my life, anyway.
