I can understand the elder generations panicing about stuff not working, but then again, they aren't as spoiled by technology as the younger ones. The older generations can probably remember when TV worked once in a while. Us youngins are so used to cable TV and having a perfect picture all the time that we expect perfection out of every new technology that comes out.
Of course, different people react to situations differently. When my grandpa's TV doesn't work, he usaully says something to the effect of "Oh, might as well go work on the truck, maybe the TV company will fix it by the time I'm done". Now, hand the same situation to a 15-25 year old (This is just an example), and you'll probably get something to the effect of "!?! $*!@ TV COMPANY!!! THOSE $*(@$*( CANT DO ANYTHING RIGHT!!! DIE DIE DIE, I'm going to call the TV company now and tell them to go $*@! themselves!".
1: Secretaries get their own day!! =/ (Our secretaries aren't very pleasant)
2: Mothers get their own day, and to me, my systems are my babies. So my employers don't have to do anything, I'll just set up a few cron jobs (at would work better), to just write my terminal a few times saying 'Thank you for taking care of me'.
You were right? How does some "Ex Microsoft, now Government official" make it written in concrete? He is warning of stuff, not saying it's GOING to happen. If you look at the security most servers (even corporate machines) had 5-10 years ago, it was pretty weak in general. If you look at security today, everyone complains, but it has improved dramatically (Yes, even by MS).
I do though, believe this is a real threat. I'm pretty sure someone will take a go at it also. The thing is, my mom has the best advise for this, 'Prevention is the best medicine'. Well, take it out of context a little, and it works.:-)
Contrary to the geek (Ok, maybe not all the geeks) belief, not all 'non-geeks' are that dumb. When I had my PC Repair shop, I sold a computer to this 80 year old guy (Seriously, 80). I was like 'Oh, he'll never use it. hah!'. My mistake. 2 Weeks later his modem got zapped by lightning, when I went down there, to my amazement he had sent over 200 e-mails. On top of this, he taught himself how to set backgrounds, change windows' colour scheme.. I was amazed. Now you say 'But that was winblows, its easy'. Well, Look at XPClone^H^H^H^H^H^H^HMandrake.
On top of this, he had never touched a computer before, its whatever you stick infront of them. So don't underestimate the non geeks.
I got a customer at a bank that almost went to another webhosting provider because we ran linux, and he wanted something more 'Practicle'. His suggestion, Solaris. Well.. Whats that.. Sol9 shipped with OpenSSH? I see.. much more secure than our pathetic linux servers! Putz.
Its not the cost of the software, its how you admin it.
I'm an opensource kiddie, and I agree with 'If there is a need for it, the open source community will eventually get it out.' On the other hand. The OS will know more about you... this scares me. Yes, it is intended to improve how you use your computer, but damn! Look at the potential risk they are taking with spyware, and crackers obtaining more information about you than you need. With Windows'(tm)(r)(c) current track record with spyware, I don't think I'd even trust a '100% built from the ground up' Windows. I've got a 2kpro workstation here at work. I've got numerous applications from Mcaffe's spam stopper to Adaware, and I still manage to get spam, and ugly ads I cant get rid of. Adware removes atleast 3 cookies(etc) a day. Then again, MS could do an unbelievable job on Longhorn and make it a tight, stable, and secure OS that is still packed with functionality. So I guess I'm just gonna sit back and see what happens. =)
P.S. Yeah, I tend to bash MS often, but they aren't 100% wrong 100% of the time. They do make some nice products.
I was thinking the same. Its kinda nice to have one company doing it all in the respect of 'Ok what part of the network is that, Oh, its KPNQwest's, everything is theres! Duh!' That is a nifty concept. But I'd have to agree that a single point of failure is evil. =/ If Qwest (the US company) went out of business, they'd drag down the 14 monopolies^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hstates they have monopolies^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hservice in. As much as I hate Qwest (They were 2 months behind on a cross town T1 install, and I'm still waiting (4 months) for them to turn on the rest of the channelized lines in my T1 for dialup users), but if they went under, it would be 100x worse =/.
Hrm, If I was paying for MP3s, I wouldn't be sharing. Everyone seems to think they _DESERVE_ everything for free. Screw them, if I pay a buck for a song, its mine mine mine.
Everyone has their opinions. Who says it won't work? I've been getting my MP3s for free since I started downloading them on my 'BRAND NEW 14.4!' back in the day. BUT, if a company were to promise me good download speeds (40k/s would make me happy), high availability at any time, a HUGE selection covering all the genre's I like, then I'd happily pay $9.99 for a CD or a buck for a single song. In all reality, P2P programs annoy the bloody piss out of me. I can't stand their spyware, and their connectivty scheme tends to chow ALOT of bandwidth. IRC is quite a pain in the ass too. 700 people in one channel, you can't even go in there on dialup because the user list will cause loads of lag. So if a company could legitimately sell me a high quality MP3 for a buck, and I could find it easily in a search engine, and then download it right away with no queues, then I'd be a happy consumer again.
Last month my work station transfered somewhere around 2 gig upstream 3 gig down stream. Thats at the router, so that doesn't include local network trafic. What that does include is atleast a dozen mp3s, pleanty of DivX pr0n, and loads of/. pages. Capping me off at 5 Gig wouldn't really bother me.
What if it gets bent? With a high density like that, a crease down the middle, or even a curve in the paper(or other material) could mean losing a few gigs of backup. And what if some numbnutz licks it thinking its a stamp!?! OH NO!? erm.. ok, I'll shutup now.
Naturally other nations would follow suit seeing the economic improvement such communications allow.
Economic improvement? WTF?! DSL companies keep going bankrupt charging money for their service, if its 'free', does that mean the government is gonna go bankrupt?
Though if the telco's would back the fark off, that would help. Anyways, A freely connected internet would NOT be good. Your killing LOADS of income for alot of companies (small and big). Competition is bad enough the way it is. We dont need that crap out there.
Ehm.. Dude.. Even if we ARE the target market, the big wigs don't agree. For instance. I told my boss what I'd like to see us do in the marketting department for our Webhosting company. And he laughed, and said: "Yeah, but your a geek, the customers aren't". Excuse me? Score -5 Insult. I'm a geek? Who the hell you think researches webhosting companies before the corperate big wigs see them... THE GEEKS.
Ok.. enough babbling.. Point is, The money holders won't see geeks as a target market, even if we are the primary market. Too bad for them I guess.
Kazaa light... no adware??? HAHAHA My 2k box was running tight untill I put Kazaa Light on it... Then suddenly I had adware coming outta my ears. Adaware was even having problems with it. After like a week of hacking at it, the box still isn't all that happy, but I think most of the adware is gone. Anyways, kazaa light DOES have adware.. NEENER.
Yes yes.. *BEGS* PLEASE OH PLEASE TAKE QWEST WITH THEM!!! I hate dealing with that company. Takes 3 months to get a T1 across town.... Takes 3 minutes for me to configure the router..... Thats just uhm... wrong?
If I remember correctly, all the pizza hut stores used SCO... Just because it doesn't have mainstream interest doesn't mean its dead.. I'd run SCO on all my boxen if I knew how to admin it. Why you ask? Security through obscurity. How many SCO sploits do you see? Of course I'm sure their are a few floating around somewhere, but the generalized script kiddies won't find them easily.
So, what if I live in China, set up a server and serve up kiddie porn to Americans, spamming them every 2 minutes. China has no Child Pornography laws if I remember correctly (that and or no age of concent, not exactly sure on that one). So, since I live in China, I'm immune to any kiddie porn laws.. neyya neyya.
I don't like this at all. Its problems like this we didn't have to worry about without the Internet. Now that its becoming an issue, people have to something figure out. How do we handle jurisdiction on the internet? I obviously have no idea how to handle this, I'm not a lawyer, and don't understand the governmental protocols to this scope.
I work at a small ISP (400 customers), I ran this on our password list once just out of curriosity on how stupid the customer passwords were.. sad part was, some how 10% of the passwords were the same as the usernames...... No more letting users change their own passwords.
I've always had an extreme hate for Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, etc in regards to the amount of spam I get from them, but now that I've read that article, and see prolly 1/10th of what they have to deal with... I don't blame them that much anymore.
You mean Winsux? Thats why they wouldn't retaliate in that manner, plus the fact that they don't exactly stick to *nix standards... hell they can barely stick to any standards.
I just sent a nasty note to MS too, and along with the other hate mail, it'll get ignored. The only thing I was using hotmail for was to try and stay atleast a little bit anonymous on e-bay. I went in and changed my e-bay settings to point to a different address, and viola, I am no longer going to use my hotmail account! And in 20 days, they'll deactivate it. I'm also going to put something of the *nix nature back on my workstation. After the recent slew of spyware attacks on this box, and using every possible deturnet (adaware, etc), I've decided to give up on MS all togather.
But the thing that REALLY tweaks my pierced nipples, is the fact that I spent about 1/2 an hour a day for the last 3 weeks opting out of the spam I was getting on my hotmail account, and it was actually working to some slight extent. I was down to 10 messages a day roughly, AND THEN.. I login today... 85 new messages >=/ GRAR! MS == Nazi's... All those people that are anti MS, I will now join you, cuz I no longer have ANY compassion for them.

More interesting is the load of other sites hosted by the same company (same box?) This Netcraft list proves quite usefull. The list includes www.illegal.com, www.wife-beaters.com, and www.vandals.com. I just thought that was interesting.
This would suck.

Well, if its encrypted, wouldn't there possibly be a reason for it to be encrypted.. ie they are hiding^H^H^H^H^H^Hprotecting something?
