The movie spends zero time introducing the four main characters. There is no way of knowing why there such a love-hate relationship between Faye and Spike/Jet. And why does Ein know the next move of Go? Or why does Spike have this whole devil-may-care attitude? Viewers of the series or readers of the manga could easily answer those questions. It's a good anime movie, but it is squarely aimed at the fans of the series.

I would like to disagree with you there. Before seeing the movie I've only heard of CB in passing and haven't seen a minute of the actual series, I certainly don't know any of the things you've listed, and yet I've enjoyed the movie tremendously. I don't know who pioneered the idea that for a movie to be enjoyable everything has to be explained to death and made obvious; on the contrary the fact that you don't know everything about it lends the movie a bit of credibility, it feels like there is something going on there.

It's impossible to compress a world created over dozens of episodes into a lame half-hour "introduction" at the beginning of a movie, and I am glad they didn't try to. Personally, I'll just make sure to watch the series itself now.

Oh and I have to agree on the dubbing - while it was very well done, I still would've preferred subtitles, there's just something "wrong" with watching Anime in English, kind of like eating sushi with a fork - some people find it more convinient, but it just doesn't feel right.

Yeah, I hate it when they do that - give me a lame character, bad fight scenes and awful music!

Seriously, I think that being "jsut a long episode" is the absolute best thing a movie based on a (good) series can do. When they try to do something "special" it either alienates the fans, or just comes out crap.

The discovery of the structure went a long way towards the discovery of the method of replication (W&C actually hinted at this in the paper) and of the specifics of its function. Without it we could not determine the DNA sequence, without which any study of genetics can only go so far.

That we have a (mostly) completed human genome sequence only 50 years after the discovery of the structure is absolutely astounding. This of course is only the first step, the practical applications (while they exist already) will be coming into their own in the very near future. Also I am led to think that you don't have a great understanding of how exactly molecular genetics is affecting your life already.

Incidentally we did not discover the moon 10 years before we got there. And figuring out how life works is a little more complicated than strapping a huge engine on a metal bucket.

This whole Franklin thing tends to get blown out of proportion a bit. Wilkins was Franklin's (and W&C's) superviser, and as such her knowledge or consent doesn't really apply here.

Of course hers was a very significant contribution to the discovery, and she would certainly have been included on the Nobel prize, were it not for the simple fact that she was dead by the time they got around to awarding it, and Nobel's aren't awarded posthumously.

Incidentally, she did produce data that went along way to help the formation of the theory, but she certainly wasn't the one to put it forward (incidentally, she thought it was a triple helix). She published her data in the same issue of Nature, but didn't risk putting forward any sort of ground breaking theory.

In any case, the article doesn't compare Bush to Hitler, it compares some of the tactics employed by Bush to some of those employed by Hitler. And while it is true that the essay has been massaged to skew the perception towards the sensationalistic, much of the comparison (once again, of the tactics, not the people) is not without merit.

Besides, whatever else, Hitler was a very apt leader, in some ways comparing Bush to him is too much of a compliment.

That's something that always bothers me - people seem to be completely unable to separate people's beliefs, attitudes, agendas and morality (or lack theirof) from their abilities and competencies.
