    The Republicans don't have any short and curlies to be had by.

    The Democrats have both houses of congress and the executive and nothing is going to change the former for the next year and 9 months. Even then, it is a stretch to consider the Republicans getting anything close to a majority in either house. If the Republicans have any hope, it is to produce another Contract with America. They could start with some of the things that didn't get done or that have been over turned, like the fiscal responsibility act (remember when the US ran a surplus).

    Add some new things like:

      72 hour public viewing of the final form of all laws before voting
      Single item legislation, except spending bills and time of war

    I doubt the current bunch has it in them to do anything other then politics as usual.

    Homeopathy works, your just not gullible enough. If someone has a pain and a friend tells them to wear a magnet or copper or a pyramid on their head and they try it and their pain goes away, then they'll believe that works. From their perspective, it actually does work, so how can you argue that it doesn't. You can try to tell them they're gullible and more susceptible to the placebo effect, but more then likely they will only cling harder to their beliefs.

    I consider myself to be pro-science, but I see too many people who are aggressively anti-anything-not-100%-approved-to-be-scientific while ignoring some other piece of science (like the placebo effect).

    Which brings up the $50,000 question, how do you determine what source is running on a remote server? Even if source is available, there is no reliable method for determining that a remote server is running unaltered source. Things like checksums and version numbers can be spoofed by the server.

    "Wikipedia - Also running on that server, that the profile is served with. Maybe also synced like IRC."

    And who is going to decide which server gets to own a profile? And how do you leverage the Web to fill in and fact check profiles? Seems pretty dicey. Would probably end up like bit torrents. Might be worth it just to hear someone complain "I wanted the War of 1812 page and I got 2 girls and a cup."

    Twitter - A single text entry box with a 126 character limit that appends to the text already displayed.
    Facebook - An html file on your desktop that links to your media folder.
    Google - Grep from a bash shell.
    WoW - A virtual landscape with no other players, just lots of rats (this already applies to 2nd life).
    StumbleUpon - A file browser.
    Wikipedia - Man pages.

    This is an existing product that is being evaluated for use by the President. By this logic, if the President wanted to use GCC and compile Ubuntu on his laptop, and the NSA evaluated those two products, then we can claim to have ownership of GCC and Ubuntu.

    I had mod points, but you hear convoluted logic like yours expressed on Slashdot all the time.

Bale could cameo as John Conner and save the day, or if Ridley Scott is directing, get there in time to watch the old guy die and join his family in the wheat fields.

    It would have been cooler if it was named the Colbert Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill, but the real issue is that NASA should have to respect the wishes of the people. The rest of the Government should as well, but that is another story.

    Where are the specs and schematics for this thing and why did it cost $6.8 million dollars? Why isn't it running some flavor of Linux or BSD and why is no one commenting on the Diebold machines used for this off year special election? Was this a test run or some sick conditioning scheme for the Government to pre-determine the results? Are the ACLU and the EFF going to do anything about this?

    Just like all of these nominees that didn't pay their taxes, the real question is whether they did it intentionally or whether it was a simple mistake. From the withheld evidence, it appears to be the latter.

    He's a Republican. Which means it's okay to violate his rights to a fair trial. Just like all of the 'Hang Them' comments concerning Bush and Cheney.

    It's not just users. The netbook producers have to consider who is going to support the OS on their shiny new netbook lines. For Windows, they get their support from MS. For Linux, who is going to provide support? The netbook producers aren't going to want or be able to support all of their winey users or their winey problems.

    They, the producers, have already figured this out, which is why they have started to sell the Linux models only in bulk.

    Being a graduate (top 3) of the Nuclear-Biological-Chemical Weapons school, I can honestly say that tear gas is not torture. It is actually really good for the sinuses and will clear up a head cold in a matter of minutes.

    Having 2-pam-chloride and atropine injectors demonstrated before requiring you to inject yourself is pretty close to torture, but even then, the scary effects only last a little while.

    My brother is a graduate of the Search, Evasion and Rescue school. He was tortured, but laughs about it now.

    I'm not preaching abstinence, I'm pointing out that you can't fault the Pope for the actions of people that don't listen to him in the first place.

    Encouraging abstinence doesn't work 100% of the time, but abstinence does work 100% of the time for the people who actually follow it. Encouraging people to engage in sex with condoms doesn't work either, for a variety of reasons including that condoms don't work 100% of the time. The third world could be carpet bombed with condoms and it wouldn't stop them from having babies. It's not a lack of condoms that is causing this problem.

    You take 1 thing the Pope says and ignore the 99 other things that come with it (ex. abstinence before marriage). Those 99 other things are more effective at reducing births and the spread of AIDS then condom use could ever approach.

    The people who are going to ignore the 99 other things are the same ones who aren't going to listen to you or the Pope, so really, all you are doing is being an ass.

    Scientifically, condoms don't prevent pregnancy or aids. They only reduce the chances of getting either when engaging in sex.

    Amongst other things, he believes that even if GW is occurring, it could actually be good for humanity. Not all humans everywhere, but humanity as a whole. More than anything, Professor Dyson is opposed to the doom sellers (Al Gore) and hockey stick proponents (Hansen) whose huge egos prevent any discussion at all.

    If you claim to have proof of the doom of humanity and someone asks to see the proof, your responses should not be "Trust me, I'm much smarter then you" and "No, I won't show you cause it will only serve to bolster my critics". Nor should it be "Buy my Academy award winning movie, go to my Emmy award winning web site and purchase carbon credits from my company".

    My mom used a hot wheels track. My dad used a belt. Physical punishment was much preferred to being grounded by my brothers and myself and at some point they realized this and stopped using force. As the youngest child, I felt that I was given the short end when this switch happened, because it happened at the same time for me as for my older brothers.

    I don't believe that I suffered any psychic trauma and love both of my parents dearly. I find it amusing to watch the reactions of others when I tell them about getting hit with a hot wheels track. You'd think, from the looks of horror, that I had been molested.

    I still remember both of them saying "This is going to hurt me more then it is going to hurt you". As a child I thought that was a foolish lie. As a parent, I can totally see where they are coming from.

    It's still a stupid idea. Reporting of news is always going to be slanted one way or another. It's just as easy to not report news that hurts your candidate as it is to only report news that hurts your candidate's opponent.

    Besides, it's not taxes that are hurting the newspapers. It is that no one wants to wait until tomorrow to read something that is already old news on the web.

    There was an article recently about Gravity Waves which mentioned that they can affect the frequency of light. I wondered at the time whether there could be some similar effect that causes the red shift we have observed throughout the Universe. Something like a standing wave that affects light coming into our Galaxy.

    My current favorite thought experiment replaces the big bang with a big coalescence. Imagine 2 water drops, one yellow and one blue. The point that we deem the big bang is the point that they begin to merge. The universe that we observe is the resulting green parts, or perhaps the boundary area. Coalescence could account for the increasing rate of expansion of the Universe.
