  1. Re:Windows Bundles on ESR Says as PCs Get Cheaper, Windows Will Die · · Score: 2, Interesting

the point of the cost is that when a pc costs $350 new from a store, that the microsoft software would be taking up say, $200 of the price the store had to pay to get the system set up. that would only leave them $150 for the components, labor, and profit. with that little revenue left going to the store it wouldn't be profitiable for them to put window on it anymore.

they would like a device that, apon detecting a non-authorized media form would release an flammable gas into the room and quickly ignite itself. that will teach all the nasty pirates out there. and those horrid people trying to watch their old home videos transfered to digital form.

for one, copyrights shouldn't last as long as they do right now, by the time something is out of copyright its either hailed as an amazing classic or only available in pirated form. if a group decides not to make money off it it should be reproducable.(some of the disney movies like song of the south would be in this category)

as for other media changes. lower the cost of new dvd's and cd's. if i didn't think i was going ot be paying to much for some no talent music i'd buy more. also, give more to the bands, then i'd buy more because it would actually support them.

finally, because some this could hurt the total money coming into the industry if enough people don't buy more, lower the paychecks going out to the lawyers and execs, stop giving the government lobbying money since business is supposably so bad, cut the funds going to anti-copying encryption and technology, and lower the amounts of lawsuits that money is being spent to fight.

ok, alot of those weren't changes to the law, but they were at least changes....

i don't see what people have against comics. i don't read them anymore, and the superhero ones have very little depth, but some actually do have plot, character, evolution, yadda yadda yadda.

as for some things that are now considered real literature are awful, and much is read in a manner completely different then how it was intended.(i.e. how many people read shakespeare for the off color jokes and commentary, trust me its there.)

there isn't any reason to dismiss a section of current culture just because it doesn't fit the guidelines set up decades ago for what is good and what isn't.

Handling the complaints and support would be incredibly easy. Since bnetd wasn't written by their teams, they merely tell the customer that asks about it that they don't support it, as third party software the authors need to be contacted and they use it at their own risk. As for identity left, the described uses were more for lan parties, if one of your friends steals your character at a lan party just walk around the table and smack him. Also, if you think they should be allowed to work if they are proved secure, how do you expect them to be able to prove it when they can't write the software?
