  1. Re:how can this be? on ZeoSync Makes Claim of Compression Breakthrough · · Score: 1

That's random data but it istotally compressible. Even though you banged away at your keyboard, by the virue its a US/UK keyboard, your options are still very limited. Since this is standard ascii text which is 8 bits per character, it works out to 32*8=256 bits (remember to count the spaces!!!)

This is how the occurances break down
    1. " ": 4 occurances 00001
    2. o: 3 occurances 00010
    3. q: 3 occurances 00011
    4. i: 1 occurance 00100
    5. e: 3 occurances 00101
    6. r: 1 ocurrance 00110
    7. g: 1 occurance 00111
    8. j: 1 occurance 01000
    9. n: 1 occurance 01001
    10. .: 1 occurance 01010
    11. a: 3 occurances 01011
    12. m: 1 occurance 01100
    13. d: 1 occurance 01101
    14. n: 2 occurances 01110
    15. v: 2 occurances 01111
    16. p: 1 occurance 10000
    17. f: 2 occurances 10001
    18. l: 1 occurance 10010
    19. z: 1 occurance 10011
    20. oq: 2 occurance 10100
So we've got 19 different individual "pattens" that we can incode with 5 bits instead of 8.

Now we just string those together you get 30*5=150 bits, plus a bit at the end to let decoder know that your at the end (since your going to be stuffing 5bit strings into 8bit strings you'll end up having some carry over. You've also gotta store the table so you can go the other direction, which when added to the now 5 bit stream, you end up with something a bit larger. But for a real example with a couple thousand letters, it would end up working out.

I'm sure I've made some stupid mistake, if so just flame away. I can take the heat.

  2. Yet another nail in the privacy coffin on Xbox Sequel Rumors · · Score: 1

Yeah, I know, I'm one of those people who puts their hand in front of the camera at the ATM...

I see this as just another way that microsoft is going to pull off the ultimate fast one...

Once they get their .net stuff up and running, with the next release of windows, it'll be compulsary that you have a .net subscription, which by the way states that you have to accept updates from microsoft (much in the way that Diablo2 updates itself, it just happens) and it'll automatically deduct your subscription cost monthly (and the fee for downloading the patch...) from your microsoft passport account...

Once they get this infrastructure in place, they'll roll out their Digital Copyright Management System (DCMS). digitally unsigned MP3's will be unplayable because their point of origin will be unknown. Since they only support ripping of WMA files anyway, you'd only be able to play WMA files that were created on your machine (your computers unique GUID would be watermarked into the rip during the encoding.) The converting of WMA files back into cdda format and ripping them onto CD's would be completely disallowed. Since DCMS is implemented at the OS level (down near all the filesytem calls) trying to even use winamp wouldn't work since winamp wouldn't even be able to open the file. Not that you'd possibly be allowed to install winamp, since it's not a digitally signed application from Microsoft, you'd have to pay extra to allow the installing of non microsoft sanctioned programs. If you think that this idea is far fetched, Go and download a driver that hasn't been "certified" by microsoft... Now imagine this taken to the next level, where instead of giving you a choice it would just exit out of the install or worse, you'd get fined for trying to install non-ms software.

Now that the whole world is connected to .net, microsoft can start selling all kinds of totally anonymous usage information based off of data collected from everybody.

So, how does microsoft get everybody off their backs really quickly? (those people being the DOJ) Use their monopoly to benefit the DOJ. Before they went that road, once they rolled out DRMS, the RIAA and the MPAA would get right into their corner (forget about divx every working again...) Where I get this idea from is looking at the EULA for Windows Media Player... at the end is a clause that says that microsoft has the right to download onto the users pc updates without their knowledge, these updates may disable software that doesn't comply with Digital Rights Management. (I'm paraphrasing) Then microsoft would cut a deal with the DOJ where'd they be able todo searches of all the data collected from everybody's machine connected to .net. Since your inclusively connected, you could be extensively profiled (for good or bad).

Yeah, I know it was rambling, but its juat what I think is going to happen.

I think globalization is about knocking down the walls in our hearts and minds and realizing that if we don't start working together as a world nation, there won't be any nations left. We are just a tiny planet in a small solar system in a really big universe. We were given the opportunity to make something of ourselves. So far its only been war and hate. Case: Titanium or spun aluminum, something tough enough that I can drop the thing and not scream "Oh fuck" and to protect the solar panels that'll slide out from the cover...

    Power:
    1. Solar panels that would slide out of the cover and detach so they could be aimed at the sun, also the cover of the laptop should have attach points for them and plug into a common "power in" point2. Kickass light long lasting battery or fuelcell technology.
    3. The "power in" point should accept upto 240V in so it could be plugged into anything, from a car lighter to a european plug and everything in between. Also the solar panels should be able to charge the onboard battery when the machine is off.

    Ram: at least 128mb

Non Volitile Storage: If I could get my hands on a a multi GB DOC drive, that would be dandy. I'd like something that was like 20mm on a side perferrably. so that I could several of them. My idea is the less moving parts the better.
Keyboard: something confortable (this has for the most part been sorted out.
Mouse: The "nipple" works good as do touch pads. Not really sure, maye something better?

Display: 1024x768x16 at a minimum. Also, the solar panels could be oriented in such a way that they could be used as "shades" so that the glare could be cut.

Video Card: a card with great 2D and good 3D.

CPU: Crusoe or SA or PPC, whichever would give me the best weight/power@heat/performance. I'd be pscyed if they could build a processor that had the main memory on the same die as the processor. Also it should be low power enough that cooling isn't an issue. (hence why I like the crusoe). The other idea would be todo some underclocking.

Security: Since its in an aluminum/titanium case, it should be lockable. Though Acer has started including a Fingerprint scanner on their laptops. That would be a sweet way to login. Try Guessing THAT password!

    Networking: Integrated 1Gbit + wireless + 1 pcmcia slot.

Enviromental: I'd like to be able to take this laptop to the beach and set it down. It should be compeletly water proof to 10M with all external connectors sealable by either the clamshell of the case or double seal gromits. Internally all components would be sealed in that injectable clearn rubber epoxy stuff. The keyboard would be completely replaceable without having to open the machine. I'm thinking it would be either some clip in system or small aluminum jack screws. As for the keyboard connector it would be connected via surface contacts so that their wouldn't even be a cable running inside.

Other things I'd like it to have would be a GPS of some kind. This could be just a PCMCIA card since I don't think I'd ever have a modem in it.

This would be my ultimate laptop. It would be a bit bulkier (probably like one of those thin aluminum suitcase things) but it would be kickass.
