To me it seems like it would benefit telemarketers to have a list of people who do not wish to receive calls from them. These people do not make purchases to begin with so it is just a waste of time and money. If you take people off the list who will never buy anything, you are left with a list of people who have a higher chance of buying something, and you can better target them. Same thing goes for junk e-mail. It doesn't make sense for a spammer to waste time sending e-mail to someone who will never purchase their product or service. If anything, telemarketers should be rejoicing now that their target market has become more concentrated with potential buyers.
The specific reason for using high voltage rather than high current is due to power loss. The power dissipated is I^2*R or V^2/R. As you can see, the amount of power wasted goes up incredibly fast with large currents and larger resistances. High voltages on the other hand don't go up so quickly because of the division by R so there is less energy lost to warming up the power lines and creating magnetic fields.
This sounds like a good idea to me. As a soon to be 3rd year EE major, I definately think this is the way to go. All of my memories from basic circuit design classes are well...nonexistant. The classes were so boring and theoretical that it was pointless to go to class...so i didn't. Learning circuits from a theoretical standpoint is difficult and often times the math is more complicated than what you'd reasonably expect from university class (I remember a 25 page homework solution for a 1 week assignment - 10 problems). There is also a lack of practical applications being taught. There is only so many times you can apply Kirchoff's voltage and current laws and Ohm's law to a box of lines and numbers and still be sane. Looking at schematics that mean nothing to you all day is pointless. I know I would have been far more interested in EE if we were building a transister radio or something useful rather than just tinkering with simple low/high/band pass filters and verifying Ohm's Law. Granted these are worthwhile skills, but you don't get the full picture of electrical engineering from crappy textbooks.
heard this in an engineering class the other day...
What's the contour integral around Western Europe?
A: Zero, because all the Poles are in Eastern Europe!
Execute a spammer. It's clean, it's quick, and it's efficient. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
What do you consider a spammer? Is it someone who mails regardless of whether they opted in or does this term apply to all people who send e-mail advertisements or newsletters. Many companies run legitimate e-mail marketing campaigns.
Does anyone out there know what the job market looks like for electrical engineers? I will be graduating relatively soon with a BS in EE from a UC but i'm not convinced that will do much for me. I've been hearing the EE market is going dry as well. Is there anyone else who has had experience with this and could offer some insight in where to go? I'm pretty tired of school and i'm not looking forward to any more student loans, but i'm in this for the longterm financial gain. I have a background in computers for as long as I have been able to read and currently work as a sysadmin part time. Is there anyway to tie these two fields together in order to make a decent living?

Aquanet is a very impressive propellant. That is what i used until i discovered propane in the tanks. Aquanet also clogs up the combustion chamber. Propane is much cleaner and shoots the spuds at least 50% further for the same gun. Its a lot more predictable as well.

It just so happens I had this same hobby a few years back. Except we used propane as the fuel and golf balls as the projectiles. Tiger Woods beware! It was truly amazing to see a golf ball launched several hundred yards, almost out of sight.
For those interested, www.spudtech.com has a load of information on these fun toys.
Has anyone else ever noticed that almost all of the articles on cnn's technology or science and space sections always end up on slashdot and those that don't usually are on cnn after being on/.?
Or am I just imagining this?
That is interesting. My company is currently using FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE-p2 on a dual athlon mp box without a hitch.
Not to start a flame war, but for certain things, FreeBSD is just better. Not to mention it makes my life a lot easier as an admin because of the excellent organization of the entire operation system. I switched my current company (along with the admin who was a Linux lover since 1.0) to FreeBSD and so far it has been perfect. The comment from the original admin: "Why didn't we do this sooner?". When you need something that just works, FreeBSD is there to do it.
Since i work from home i am lucky enough to answer just about every call I receive. I really hope this do not call list gets implemented. It is annoying as hell to receive 10+ calls a day, and even worse is that 9 of those times it is just a machine recording! If they can waste my work day i'd like some sort of compensation for it, or at least a way to opt-out of it.
You can play the tracks as much as you like on your PC, burn to CD as many tracks as you want, copy the burned CDs, and use the CD to make MP3s. Keep in mind there is supposed to be some form of digital watermarking on the tracks though. So if you give the music to anyone else, they (UMG) are supposed to be able to know it was you who violated their copyright.
What if someone steals the music from you? They can't hold you responsible for spreading the music unless they can prove you did it intentionally. Just more record company BS.
Microsoft's very nature requires them to sell software in order for them to survive. If people are going to pay for software, they need to be getting something they aren't getting from free software.
I've been a FreeBSD/free software user for over 5 years now and in my experience, free software just works better. When was the last time you had a windows server that went 270+ days without a reboot (when was the last time there was 270 days between security patches?)?
If microsoft wants to win the war against OSS, they need to make their software far more resiliant against crashing and security issues.
Talk about rediculous! I think we can all agree that spam is annoying but this is absurd. This will serve to do little but clog courts with people complaining that they received an e-mail that they didn't want. So what?!? I get over a hundred spam messages a day but I just ignore them. Its pretty obvious what is junk and what isn't. No harm is done to the user so why should they have the right to sue? And come on, $100 per message? This isn't reasonable.
I was suprised to see this review on/. but i must commend it. As a frequent foodtv watcher, i have to say that this guy is great. In every episode he goes after the science behind a particular food. He covers the chemistry of certain processes and explains often times how to circumvent problems.
He recently did a show about strawberries that was superb. He showed an ingenious technique for freezing the strawberries using dry ice (for the CO2) so that they don't get mushy. He also ended the show with a brilliant analogy of antioxidants and free radicals using the strawberry dessert he had just made.
Although often times quite eccentric, his show is always alurring to watch. Even if you aren't a fan of cooking shows this one might be of interest. On sunday around 9pm on foodtv (check your local listings) he has a full hour long show scheduled on cooking on a deserted island...or is that desserted? His culinary ingenuity is truly impressive.
Quite an impressive job but is it worth that much time/effort?
How soon will it be until car manufacturers include PCs in the dash instead of navigation system? Just think of how many accidents will happen because of people trying to play solitaire on their way to work!
The subtitle and main question is: Can a band of biologists who share data freely out-innovate the corporate researchers who hoard it?"
The true question is whether those biologists can make more money their corporate rivals. Innovation is useless unless there is a profit to be made!
Scientifically this site poses several risks to Nevadans. Rarely is it mentioned that the area directly surrounding YM frequently has ~4.0 earthquakes or that underground rivers exist below the site. If the containers were to corrode or any sort of spill were to occur, Nevada would become even more desolate than it already is. Nuclear waste would make its way to Lake Mead and Nevada's ONLY source of fresh water would be lost since they already pumped out practically all of the existing ground water (las vegas is 20ft lower now than it was 50 years ago). Additionally, this would flow into the colorado river and run through AZ. This decision is retarded to say the least. But Nevada only has 2 Reps (3 for the next congressional term) so their political power is severly lacking. Fortunately it looks like waste won't arrive for at least another 8 years and hopefully something will happen that will change the DOE's decision. Pray.
Not only will you be supporting the highly subsidized ethanol industry, but you will also be supporting the oil companies since energy is needed to make ethanol, which comes from oil. So either way you're helping big oil...not that its a bad thing.

Amps times Volts is Watts, not Joules. 1 W = 1 Joule/sec. So the current is going to depend on the duration of that .2J energy discharge.
