It may also be possible to make a point that Open Source software is not a finished product. Anyone at anytime can download the software in its current working form and modify as they like. In that case nobody could be sued for distributing a faulty finished product.

I agree that the public becoming active and writing our government representatives is a great idea and will hopefully have some effect. However it will be hard to overcome the effect of hundreds of thousands of dollars that our government representatives get from special interest groups such as the entertainment industry. Example from the article:
Hollings, who has received $264,534 in campaign contributions from the TV, music and movie industries since 1997, has attempted to argue that standardized copy protection is the key to encouraging the continuing rollout of broadband Net connectivity.
Ourrepresentatives will likely continue to represent those who give them the most money which they can then use to get reelected. Why they just don't try to get elected based on doing what their constituents want I do not know. I guess all we can do is write our reps and vote accordingly.
In addition, Microsoft has already developed the database technology it needs for a new file system. A future release of its SQL Server database, code-named Yukon, is being designed to store and manage both standard business data, such as columns of numbers and letters, and unstructured data, such as images. Yukon will also form the data storage core of Microsoft's Exchange Server and other future products.
Other more modern games may be more addicitng, but as far as I remember, Street Fighter was really the first game that practically everybody was playing. Everyone was constantly trying to get better in order to one-up the "competition" and be the local champion (even if it was only withing a small group of friends). Ahhhh the good old days!
Implementing a system with an air gap is definitally a good security measure. However, it is really only practical for certain systems. On a ship, an air gap might be applicable for systems that run the ships controls (i.e. engines, environmental controls, etc). These systems may be very important for ship safety and have no need to be in contact with the outside world.
Then there is the navigation and communication systems. These are very important for a ship but may require limited access to the outside (GPS, etc). This should be completely seperate from the air gapped systems above and of course implement all other possible security measures (firewall, etc).
On a modern ship there will likely be a third level of systems used for personal communication. Web browsing, Email and the like are not vital to the safety of human beings onboard the ship an thus do not require as stringent security.
Using a multiple-system and multi-tiered security model like this may affer the best combination of security, price, and convenience due to not having to secure everything to the highest order.
Not sure why this got modded as Troll... FatRatBastard is exactly right. To the casual everyday internet user the only browsers that exist are IE and Netscape. Some people probably don't even know that since they log on with AOL or MSN and just use the wiz-bang cool default interface. Yes that interface is really in IE or Netscape but some people don't have any knowledge of that or even a desire to know. They just want to feel like "surfing" pros.
Let's assume that the third party in question had invented DSL and all of the software and hardware necessary to implement it...
What third party DSL provider invented DSL and all the software and hardware necessary to implement it? None? And even if that were true then only one company did it while the phone company is providing the capability to many third party DSL providers. This example is not quite the same.
Your example (the phone company), is actually a company being required to allow other companies to utilize the existing infrastructure to sell a service. I see your point but it is not directly related to Sun's demands. The Phone company is not required to bundle and sell third party DSL with normal phone service. That would be the correlation to the demand of Sun.
It looks like Sun has a good mindset in that they have seen little change in Microsoft's tactics:
"While this suit is based on the past actions of Microsoft, Sun also believes that Microsoft's continuing practices in the marketplace represent a threat to lawful competition and the millions of developers who depend on the existence of an open software industry. This behavior manifests Microsoft's goal to use its monopoly position to turn the Internet into its proprietary platform. What is at stake here is the future of an open software industry and an open Internet," continued Morris.
However, the demands of Sun seem a little absurd.
In its suit, Sun is seeking preliminary injunctions requiring Microsoft to:
Distribute Sun's current binary implementation of the Java plug-in as part of Windows XP and Internet Explorer;
Stop distribution of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine through separate downloads.
Demanding that Microsoft be required by law to distribute Sun's own product is absurd. If this demand is approved by a court it may set a dangerous precident where the courts have the power to dictate how a company is run. I definitally agree that Microsoft has abused their power and should be punished but this is surely a dangerous method of remedy.
...the facts show that Napster, et all seem to have a positive effect for the most part on sales
You need to remember that an actual correlation between Napster and increased music sales cannot really be made. Granted for the brief period of time in which Napster was around, the industry may have seen increased sales but don't make a correlation that isn't necesarrily true (even if we want it to be;] ).
Just becuase two things happen at once doesn't mean they are related. If that were true, people might start claiming things like the El Nino effect increases purchases of gaming systems, etc..
I see your point but dont't forget that the article mentions that one of those two other Democrats that you mention is planning on running for President in 2004.
Hollings was joined by Democratic Senators Barbara Boxer of California and John Kerry of Massachusetts, both of whom are heavily reliant on entertainment-industry money (with Kerry sure to become even more so if he runs for President in 2004, as expected).
Then the fact that John Kerry is backed by the entertainment industry will become very important indeed.
The article also mentions Hollings teaming up with Democratic Senator John Kerry (CA) who has plans to run for President in 2004:
Hollings was joined by Democratic Senators Barbara Boxer of California and John Kerry of Massachusetts, both of whom are heavily reliant on entertainment-industry money (with Kerry sure to become even more so if he runs for President in 2004, as expected).
Sending a message via our ballots will become even more important if he really does run for president!
It will be interesting to see if the effects of this SPAM will have negative result on the number of voters voting for Bill Jones. I would say that if you are against SPAM then this is a very good reason to vote for someone other than Bill Jones
A lot of these posts talk about how bad working for the gov't can be (Old technology, lack of innovation, rigid and structured environment, etc.). Maybe if enough people with a strong drive for success and innovation enter the government workforce we might actually be able to change the government for the better. Increase speed of technology adoption, increase technical knowledge, speed up the bearucratic proccesses (well maybe), etc... Maybe I'm being too much of an optimist but it's just and idea.
I know I turned down a gov't offer after graduating due the huge pay difference but I would much rather have an ok paying job than no job at all (Thankfully I still have my job).
Since when did consumers lose all of their rights as a result of buying a product?
But we still have the biggest right of choosing not to buy the product.
That is how the capitalist system works. They have every right to put out a crappy product and we have the right to choose whether we buy it our not. If few people buy it (i.e. Company doesn't make MONEY), then they will stop producing the crap product.
Moral of the Story: If you think it's crap, don't buy it!

Are you trying to tell me that you don't still have your 5.25" floppy drive installed on your machine?
Come one now, admit it...you were really reading Trekkie Highlights (Article: "Startrek Enterprise scientists working on the Future, Today").

oh yeah I forgot where we were!!! But of course the mighty moderators have finally come to their senses and now it is 4:Insightful.

It mentions Bell Labs several times including the relationship between bell labs and Vita Nuova (i.e. bell labs spun off Inferno to Vita Nuova).
Examples:
- Brilliant Handsome with Great Smile Inc.
-
Sincere Hilarious and Buff Inc.
