but selling them or broadcasting them is something else entirely
Just check the fine print of your next ticket to a sporting event (assuming you haven't fell to an impossibly extreme level of geekdom). From a Houston Texans ticket:
The ticket holder grants to the NFL, the Houston Texans and their designees the irrevocable permission to use his or her voice or likeness in any media now or hereafter existing in connection with all or any part of the football game or related events, for any purpose whatsoever, including the commercial purposes of the NFL, the Houston Texans and their sponsors, licensees, advertisers or broadcasters.
USA IS NOT THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD Easy to spout that out, but then who is? If the US is not the best country (remember, most folks speak of the best country as far as opportunity for the common man, not global politics), then exactly which country do you think holds that claim? I do think the US is the greatest country to live in, and I challenge you to show me one that's better.
At the moment it's led by a psycopathic nutter who didn't get in on a popular vote
Big frickin deal. Clinton got less than 50% too. Everyone knows the rules of the electoral college, it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that it's possible to win the election with fewer votes. I feel the national election should be by popular vote, but it's not, and I'm not gonna whine just because things didn't go my way.

God, I hate sensationalism.
Reminds me of a cornstarch and water experiment we used to do. Mix it together and you get a weird substance that exhibits properties of solids and liquids. Try it if you're bored...
One at Space Center Houston (for tourists), at least 2 fully functional trainers in Bldg 9 at Johnson Space Center (for astronaut training) and 1 in motion-based simulator (training).
Another thing he failed to mention - the shuttles are migrating to glass cockpits, not the 70's-era CRT's, knobs, buttons, and dials.

1. Radio is not play-on-demand.
2. Radio only provides access to the most popular track(s) on an album.
I agree with #1, but not #2. While there are some late night radio shows that play (or at least used to play) entire CDs (in particular, I'm thinking of a local classic rock station that would play a whole CD straight thru w/o interruption at 3 am), that's not my main disagreement.
You need to look at the reason why people buy CDs in the first place. Yes, there are many who buy them for all the songs or simply because their favorite artist has released another CD. But I would wager that the VAST majority of CD sales are soley due to the 1 or 2 songs that are played on the radio. The rest of the songs are just part of the package, but not a selling point.
Sirius' three satelites are in elliptical orbits, and two of the three are over the continental US at all times.
It is more likely they are not elliptical, rather, geosynchronous with a non-zero inclination. This results in them tracing small figure 8's centered about the equator. Each satellite probably traces the same track , each 120 degrees out of phase.
what sort of lunacy would lead to someone setting up a network where you pay to receive text?
The same lunacy that dictates that receiving a call on your cell phone counts toward your monthly allocation of minutes. Does it not work that way in Europe for voice calls?
Obviously some people must answer these emails, but I don't understand how it would ever be worth the cost of thier investment.
Insert obligatory "spam costs the spammer nothing" comment, but I think spammers also suffer from the Amway syndrome - their eyes glaze over as they imagine what to do with all that money, after all, "spam will makes people millionaires and I can be too!"
You gotta wonder what the average lifetime of a spammer is. As in, how long / how often does the typical spammer do his thing? How long till they give up?
Can't say I'm surprised. IIRC, phone numbers are given out to providers in blocks of 10,000, ie, (areaCode)prefix-xxxx where the provider essentially gets all numbers for a given prefix. Find which prefixes are owned by the cell phone companies and press 'Go'. The worst part is that the cell companies don't have a whole lot of incentive to stop it as long as they're systems are holding up to the load - just more money in their pocket.
...came to my attention last week when my wife signed up for text messaging for her cell phone. Her plan allows the first 100 messages each month free, with extras for an additional price after that. What happens if (when) that number gets on spam lists it can be sent in the form of an email, ie, cell-number@provider.com? At the rate I get spam in my inbox, surely she'll run over the 100 limit, and it WILL cost me money to receive spam. Surely there's cause for recourse at that point?
Wouldn't be too hard to take the ball and run with this one. Get on the message boards and put your number in your sig. Too bad I don't have the time or resources to do it.
The system uses GPS which is not quite accurate enough for this type of application
The GPS is only updated once per second, where as the game is updated at 30 frames per second.
Man, it'll be awesome when a place similar to a laser tag joint gets something like this. They could use a homebrew GPS to solve the resolution and refresh rates situation and build in their own environment - people would flock flock to play it... unless, of course, it's the/. crowd. In that case we'd all try to build our own.:)
The documentation should be longer than the code. If that's enforced then most people can hardly help but actually explain what's going on.
I DON'T agree on that one. We've got some Fortran still floating around here that was developed with auto-commenting utility putting
c {If
before each if and
c }end if
after each one, plus a mess of other stuff similar. It was so UNreadable that when it came my turn to make a change to that code, I removed all the comments in my development version, making it fully 1/3 of the original size.
It may have made it a little more difficult to understand what the code was doing, but proper indentation made it MUCH easier to understand the overall structure and function.
Too much commenting is a bad thing, and rules regarding length of documentation versus code are simply short-minded. Software developers are paid to think. Granted, some do a better job at it than others, but you gotsta use common sense.
The best way to learn to comment is by example. Work with well-commented and poorly-commented code - probably the best way to learn.
Glad someone said it. From the parent... Cross reference that with the purchaces made in the next 50 minutes and then filter anything >$75. They can quickly build a list of possible purchaces which will become increacingly accurate over time. The mall has the ability to do this as they probably own the ATM or have access to the log.
Do you have any idea how many many transactions less than $75 take place within said mall in a given 50-minute time period? Hundreds, perhaps thousands. Just kick the Barry Manilow affliction and you won't have to worry about be tracked.
Also, who's to say you didn't already have $150 in your pocket, withdrawing another $50 just to pay the entire bill in cash? Guess you can't eliminate any transactions.
So... why did you have to post w/ your name? You could've said what you wanted anonymously. If it was worth reading, it would be modded up.
I think the blackout a load of dung anyway. Cripes, everything here is free, and you can pay if you don't want to see ads. Some folks get slapped around a little, but I doubt it's completely at the whim of the editors. Besides, the big picture really is unaffected by a couple blips on the radar.

Quit hanging out in the fast lane. Sorry, my pet peave.

Texas is the governer is given a form a couple days before the sentance
Actually, I believe that in Texas the governor only takes action when stepping in to stop an execution, otherwise it proceeds as scheduled.

How about a database of checksums for "good" files?
This implies that rednecks shop at Wal-mart. WTF?!
This is what he's talking about.

My payment is due tomorrow and I was planning on enrolling for electronic payment. Hmm, how much is next day air?
But will they let you out of the contract early w/o the penalties if you claim that's the reason you have the phone in the first place?
get a clue. do you really think it's free money for everyone? if that's the case, you have just found a solution for poverty.
You're fucking paranoid.
