    I think you're misoverestimating the affect that the blue lazer wavelenth produces. Sure, there are more errors, but they are smaller, and this balances out in the end when compared with red lazors.

    I too am at a loss to describe any existing problem which BeOS solves. For a lack of useful commercial-type applications, it's bad enough being on Linux instead of Windows or Mac OS X, let alone on an uber-dabbler's OS.

    * they bought new SGI workstations, which run Linux, OR
    * they couldn't afford SGI workstations, so they bought other Intel workstations with Linux.

    It's not an amazing breakthrough jump. It's just that SGI barely sells Irix machines anymore.

    Stippling is just the application of small, uniform polygons (aka "dots") in rendering images. To modern graphics hardware, a dot may as well be a polygon, so we haven't gained much in practical terms.
