    So we give everyone a gun, and then the bad guys will think twice? What? That's insanity man...check out Iraq...an armed and polite society! The idea behind average people having guns as a deterent to crime is predicated on the average person being sane. That is why it doesn't work in Islamic countries and that is why guns are outlawed in NYC, but legal in Arkansas.

    ...thieves have not only been stealing the iPods, but cutting off their victim's fingers as well. Given this new threat, the Home Secretary is calling for iPods controlled by brain waves. Great - the crooks will just steal the iPod AND cut your brain out!

    I think the various over-reactions to the VaTech tragedy are sad. For example, this and also Yale banning stage weapons. I wonder what was in the essay that made the teacher go bonkers. I guess she should have told her students just to write about fluffy clouds and easter bunny.

    The 4.0 student who took shop as his electives is still in my hometown working on cars possibly missing a finger. I'm working half way across the country on computer systems for probably better pay He has a lower cost of living. He hasn't been laid off 4 times. He has been living in the same house all this time building up equity while you had to change jobs and move 6 times.

    Yeah, sucks to be him.

    While this is true, it allows for more layers of code to exist and more problems to be solved. When the Mac first came out I thought "They have this super-fast Moto 68000 processor, but then they put an OS on it that slows things down to a crawl." And then the hardware caught up with it and saved the concept of a GUI.

    The Windows XP search dog has to be the worst interface EVER. Almost all of the searches I do are the same: I pretty much always want to search the entire hard drive for a file by name. This stupid piece of crap interface you have to click on the line indicating you want to search for files by name every time. It is a lot of extra work.

    Clarus is a GIRL!!!! She is a DogCow. According to her technical note (Tech Note 31), there are no dog bulls because there are already bull dogs and God doens't like naming problems. So all dog cows (of which Clarus is the only known specimen) are female.

    This doesn't SAVE Vonage - it just allows them to continue to exist until Verizon can either buy them on the cheap or else get lots of money from them. In order for your argument to make sense, then Verizon would have to believe that another larger player in the VOIP market was going to emerge that they should wait and try to extort for a larger payday in the future. Of course, I am hypothesizing on the premise that Verizon is trying to act like a patent troll.

    Somehow I can't image that Verizon really wanted to cause Vonage to immediately go out of business which is what would have happened had they not gotten this stay. They would have been out of business by the time the case made it to trial and Verizon wouldn't have received much if anything.

    Don't worry. I installed it on a spare drive to check compatibility with my application (it worked OK). You are not missing anything.

    I agree. Obviously everyone gets picked on by someone somewhere sometime. Everyone has some kind of frustration in their lives. Everyone in developed countries is exposed to some kind of media violence. I read once that one way that people become real sickos is if during puberty the person thinks about dead animals or other violent disgusting imagery while masturbating. I don't know if that is relevant to this case.

    I am a dev and my motto is "all software engineers are liars and idiots" and I include myself in this. If you want to know how something is supposed to work in theory, ask the dev. If you want to know the actual behavior, ask QA.

    I'd really hate to be the guy that signed off on the quality of this software update. And apparently they didn't adequately test their recovery system. Oh, well. I hope they learn from this and improve!
