  1. Re:wasted? on Compliance Is Wasted Money, Study Finds · · Score: 1

"Compliance doesn't generally add value to the individual product or service. It adds value to the network or industry." Well in our case it's both, I work for a company that specializes in writing credit union software, thus PCI-DSS is a MAJOR port of our jobs right now. At one point in a meeting with our dev team they said, "We don't know anything about security, we're developers" I about had a heart attack, but now after some coaxing and pointing out what they must change for compliance, our software is slowly (as in not yet) getting better. Better because we now have processes in place for application and OS vulnerability scanning (it was REALLY bad), standardized installation procedures among other things. So our individual product is/will be MUCH better by the time we have our audit, but since we are one of the big players in the payment card network everyone benefits.

  3. Sprint on Cell Phone Service as High Speed Internet Link? · · Score: 1

here's the deal, and I know because I sell it, and I've used it. Get sprint, go to futuredial.com and make sure internet dialer is supported on the phone you want (most all samsungs Including the usually free VI-660, and most sanyo's). The upstream is usually about 110 the downstream about 118. The coverage only works on the sprint network so don't get the america coverage if your only using this phone for the internet. Make sure you get vision services, and then you don't need to pay the 79.99, in order to get it (currently sprint doesn't charge for it if you have vision on a basic plan). your latency is painful at times and sometimes images take a long time to download because of it. The best thing, you have 14 days to trial it. so just do it, sign the contract, if it doesn't work, take it back before then. get ahold of me if you want more info. P.S. pppd works perfectly well with it in linux. I've got some scripts for dialing if you want them. I just found them using google.

  4. freedom of the press. on Submit and Moderate Questions for Bush and Kerry · · Score: 1

I know that freedom of the press is a good thing, but it seems like there should be some quality checks and balances in a lot of cases, is there a happy medium between policing the media (which we do anyway) and requiring some kind of standard for the media?

That's ok, I used to live in yakima, actually still live fairly close, I went back for the holiday's I noticed red light camera's all over the place too. There was a big controversy a while back when the ypd put two officers on duty strictly for traffic infractions. Their orders were to issue as many traffic citations as possible and nothing else, and now there are several more of them. Figure in the traffic cops, the redlight camera's, (revenue, and revenue) and then the wireless network either is for a new revenue scheme, or they couldnt' figure out what to blow all their money on. (my opinion at lease)

You are so right, I'm not directly a member of mandrake's user club, but I have purchased their distro before, and various pieces of clothing, and will probably continue to do so in the future. Their product will only get better, and whinning about technicalities like this are just stupid. Right now redhat isn't even trying to me a desktop contender, mandrake really is the best desktop contender, which is a good thing, in fact 8.1 was a seriously good compiliation of software, I stripped my slackware router at work here and replaced it with mandrake 8.1 because it's so freakin easy and powerful. So why whine about a free product, that is that good?! ANd who cares about star office, sun would be microsoft if given the chance, open office never would!
