I wrote a program like that on an Apple II in 3rd grade. I asked the class go guess how long it would take the computer to count to a million. Unfortunately, it took several hours.
Has anyone seen any new laptop computers with track balls? I remember having an old ATT brand laptop (there was such a thing) with one. It was terrible. It would always get dirt in it and the ball would seem to skip at times. New laptop pointing devices are better, but I still think they need improvement. I think touch screens are probably the best solution.
What do people here prefer? Track point (eraser thingy in keyboard) or touch pads on laptops?
Windows already allows you to right click on just about any file and add a comment to it. This is useful for example if you download whatever63ab435installer.exe and you forget what it does.
I think they are already starting to do this. One time I downloaded a self extracting file from Microsoft (*.exe) and stored it on a Windows 2000 machine. Windows 2000 automatically set the permissions to the file in such a way that I could no longer modify the file on that computer (trying to add comments, or even allowing administrator to read/write to the file). I'm sure that it would be trivial for them to make their own windows media files write or copy protected.
I probably wouldn't trust a new file system until it has been proven for awhile. Compressed volumes (using drive space) for example on Windows are known to corrupt files sometimes. Funny, at one time during Dos 6.2 some manufactures sold computers with drive space enabled by default.
One of the advantages that Rambus memory had was that it was a higher speed serial connection (sort of) to the CPU. Someday, this same type of architecture may be needed if they want the CPU to communicate to the memory through some type of optical channel. Right now, memory has at least a 64bit data connection thus requiring 64 lines (and susceptible to interference). Maybe it's just that rambus' technology isn't ready yet.
You can throw your computer too. It just takes more effort:) I actually did get a "spam" of sorts from my cell phone provider telling me to visit a website to sign up for text messaging.
I'm still dealing with telemarketers calling my cell phone! Whatever you do, if you see a "win this car" thing in a mall it is a scam. Don't ever sign up or give your phone number because all they want to do is try to sell you something.
What policy on Slashdot says that anyone who happens to copy/paste the original article (and violate copyright along the way) automatically gets modded up to 5? I would think that it should be modded down for such an action.
I suppose that if you're an atheist this would make sense, but surprisingly there are still many people who do believe in a God. As such, there are still people who have hope. I would only worry about the environment in this context: we are responsible to take care of this planet, but we should not believe that we have the capability to completely destroy it because we really don't.
There needs to be some type of HTML standard for printed documents. That way, if it is something that everyone can agree on, any company could make a word processor that would be compatible with it. Right now, the only standard I know for printed documents are PS files, but that isn't even that popular compared to PDF now.
Probably somewhere on the unit as a little hole. That would be stupid. I always have to carry around an extra toothpick to reset my WindowsCE device. It only locks up about 1 time every 6 months.
Heheh... I'm one of those dorky people who got a calculator watch for his birthday. I've had it for about 10 years now. It still works too! Casio's stuff lasts forever.
If I could afford a wearable computer, I would probably use it.:)
It's so hard to find room on my desk for a 2nd book. I have a laptop and two monitors on the desk and I no longer have room for a book. It seems kind of silly, but I would prefer an e-book simply because it would be easier to read from a computer screen in this case. I wish that larger, higher resolution screens would come out soon. Even if they were only black and white (3x resolution with only 1 color).
I prefer to keep all of my documents as PDF files and the simply print the pages as I need to read them. I see printers as temporary display devices. That way, I can print something and just throw it out when I'm done reading it and still have an original copy on a hard disk drive for reference. I mostly just do this with data sheets and computer manuals.
Can't terrorists already use GPG, PGP, or other encryption stuff? Or are these available for PDA's yet? That fact that wireless encrypted data is going around would definitely raise suspicions with the FBI. They could probably trace it more easily because an actual signal is being transmitted.
Go to your BIOS and disable the L2 system cache. See how long it takes your computer to boot.:) About 95% the system will read from the chache and not the main memory. This is why it is so important.
Actually, it would only appear on the primary monitor, with your locked up application appear on the other one. I actually have never seen a blue screen on my Windows 2000 machine though. Hmm... can't wait to see how fun that will be!
When laser disks came out they were the state of the art technology that was too expensive for most people to afford, yet the had higher quality. The same will probably be true for DVHS. When higher density DVD's come out DVHS will be forgotten. New DVD's will have more compact data and will probably require a new type of blue laser to read.
Right now I think that DVD's only hold about 18Gb max (double layer) or 36Gb (double sided, double layer?). DVHS must hold quite a bit more for HDTV quality.
I think it is more likely that we will be able to MAKE another planet habitable before we ever find one. I wish NASA would stop spending so much money looking for life on other planets and instead focus on putting life on other planets. We could eventually colonize Mars if they would focus on missions to it.
So essentially, they are going to crash a multi-million dollar spacecraft into Jupiter because they are afraid that a lifeform from Earth would actually be successful on Europa? What is the point of this? Why not let the satellite survive and continue taking photos and measurements? NASA is becoming obsessed with searching for life instead of exploring or finding new planets.
If bacteria could survive and thrive on Europa, I would think of this as a great achievement not as pollution.
The stores often hook up a dozen or so of these monitors to some analog video repeater and then attach them to long VGA cables. This of course, will result in a great loss of signal quality. It will also look bad if they set the resolution wrong. The only way you can tell the quality is to plug the LCD directly into a computer system.
That doesn't even make any sense. The point of the site is to prevent the nuclear material from contaminating things. They are not just burrying the stuff either. It will probably be sealed in very large lead containers.
Wait. Donating old computers and software would cost almost nothing to Microsoft and would guarantee a new generation of people dependent on using only Microsoft software. This would be more of a benefit for Microsoft rather than a punishment. Perhaps a better punishment would be to offer rebates from Microsoft. This would immediately benefit people who have bought Microsoft software (those who are allegedly ffected by the monopoly.)
I think most states will by default put the SSN on your drivers license unless you say otherwise when you go to the DMV. Mine is a Montanan drivers license and it simply has random numbers and letters. Having a SSN as any form of identification is a bad idea. Some colleges use it on student ID cards which I believe is a very bad idea.

but in the end, we're just another species

I don't think that the battery life is measured in inches. This would be greate with 256Mb> compact flash.
