  5. Re:the obvious missing thing at libraries these da on Where New Tech Should Libraries Try Next? · · Score: 1
Blame whoever you want to. One of the reasons that there are fewer books is that scholarly journal subscription rates have been rising at a rate that is something like %15 per year for a while. Those wonderful databases that the PL subscribe to are going up at about the same rate, %10 to %15. Lest we forget that other bills are rising just due to normal inflation. Now when your budget doesn't increase or it actually decreases (more likely in a public library) you have to pick and choose what you keep, replace, and add.

Now that everyone is accustomed to free internet terminals and what not, they are clamoring for more computers, newer computers, and faster Internet connections, that takes up a good chunk of money that used to go to books. If you don't like that, and it sounds like you don't, talk to the degree holding librarians at your local public library. Write letters to the board, join the PL's Friends organization to help raise money for new books.

For the record I'm not a librarian, yet. I am working on my MLIS at the University of Kentucky part time while I work at another academic library in town.

If they really want to bring in the money sell the tickets for all three extended editions, with an intermession during them as well as between them. That is something like 13 hours. Have two meals during them, one light and one large and also if local laws allow it sell beer. You could charge $50 a ticket and still pack them in for at least a week probably 2 or 3.

Back when I was a under grad I had a cool prof named Kenny (Hi Kenny!). On our second big project for that class I was having some trouble getting it to compile on different machines or something like that and I asked him to take a quick look at it. He being the kind person he is did and sat down at the machine I was working at and fixed the problem instatnly. (I think I was using an odd path to a header file). And jokingly he typed "rm *" at the xterm and said "I'm glad you trust me" or words to that affect. That folder had all the work for this project for all the group as well as my parts. I've worked with him over the summer on a project and we became friends so I said "sure I trust you."

We all know how this ended. So I won't bother with the details. Much apologizing ensued on Kenny's part and much "Don't worry about it" on mine. I had backed up the files just before I asked for help. Thank god he didn't do "rm -r*" at / like I thought I saw.

  25. Backwoods kentucky on Touch-Screen Voting Snags Continue · · Score: 1
Kentucky has had electronic-ish (not sure exactly how "electronic") voting for years. I remember going in with my Mom to vote when I was like 5 or 6 and seeing the same machines that I see now when I vote, 20 years later. The polls close at 1800 Eastern and 1800 Western time zones and by 2115 Eastern when I got home from my night classes there were 100% precients reporting and we knew who won what. Damnit if Kentucky can have results that fast, accurate and "electronic-ish" why can't the rest of the country.

And yes recounts are very frequent in the county elections here and there has yet to be a problem with retreving information from those machines that I know of.
