YOU WERE WARNED !!!!!!
Finally, there were a lot of plot discrepancies and things that pulled me out of the storyline. Like if I were a plane crash survivor, discovering this underwater city, why would I just inject myself with a syringe I found on a table? There are a lot of things like that which caused the game to simply fall back into the vanilla FPS genre. I find it comparable to Heretic / Hexen, with modern graphics.
This is well explained at the end or nearly. "Would you kindly..." (or some phrase like that), you are genetically programmed to do any command with this bidding. So this is why you were on the plane , and it was most probably intentionally crashed. But bottom line is that the alpha/fontaine guy just forced you to do everything with those keyword. Including injecting yourself with anything found on a table. This is also how he try to make you suicide yourself.
We have a proverb around here (translated) "you can become wise, but your only certainty is that you are getting old".
Most people don't want to devaluate the value of experience, but getting OLD does not mean you are more WISE or more EXPERIENCED, and it is proved that your cognitive function deteriorate with age.
Most people when they get older , only get older and don't really learn from life, just as they did not learn from their youth when they got adult, or did not learn from their peer as adult. Furthermore there are exception : I knew a few people which were wiser than most old people when they were young/adult.
In my own experience, most old person don't become "wise" it is more than they don#t care anymore.
Firstly there are all sort of tumor, but as far as this only means "abnormal tissue growth". The one which metastases and invade all tissue are malignant and left untreated as far as I can tell, always kill you, either by destroying utterly the organ they originate from or by metastasis. What you are thinking of is some sort of benign tumor which surround a foreign body. I dunno how often it happens, but usually what surround a foreign body is scar tissue, or even necrotic tissue, not tumoral tissue (biologist correct me). Tumoral tissue in that specific would happens only when the signal triggering the scar growth run awry or the stop signal is not detected sufficiently.
Now about tumor which removed, and suddenly become mortal (your second part). I call bullshit on that one. Some benign tumor might turn malignant with timem on their own, but not due to medicinal intervention as you seem to pretend. I can't also imagine a tumor left for many years and suddenly the doctor says "oh we need to take that out now, radio therapy and chemio !". I would say it is rather that the doctor detected that the tumor did go from benign to malignant and my guess is that since they knew he/she had a tumor for years most probably it is a skin tumor easy to detect and can be deadly if change are not detected quick enough (it happens. I had a naevus (big sort of mole 4 cm wide) which changed of texture when I was 13. Out of concern the oncologue ordered immediate chirurgy and a biopsy. From what I gathered it can happens that such a big mole with time turn malignant. Turn out that had to take a LOT of my left muscle out over 13 cm and more than 2 cm deep, but biopsy was negative. Relief ensured).
Bottom line : you are mixing up cause and effect. It was not the therapy which was caused your friend tumor to grow malignant, it was the tumor growing malignant which caused your friend go get a therapy which failed and he died.
PS: I say friend above, but it seems after rereading your post it was only an acquaintance , and thus the quality of the info your present is even doubly doubtful.
Feminazi. I knew one of those lady in Germany. As one in three children recover from myocarditis on their own, the medics decided to wait and see if Jack's own heart could grow strong enough to work on its own without the need for a transplant.
Get real. If such things was doable or was done, then the U.S. military already did it and this is the only reason they protest. Which means for the rest of the world it is the choice between the "red scare" and the "cow boy scare". And seeing how many country the US invaded recently under spurious reason, I would rather chose the red scare.
Naturally this is not the same context, but it could also be used here. I read the complete review, and frankly even if the tone was a bit sarcastic and acid, the content cannot be disputed (if PZ really present the data as they are in the book then the book is pure unadulterated crap). Now depending on the wording of the lawsuit, for example defamation, then the truth is a good defense. In other word this will be dismissed, and hopefully with prejudice.
They do not favor much the "Roleplay" part in RPG. Just like their counter part of MMOG, a lot of player tend to fall in the calculator-rpg. See the post above with fighter-barb-red dragon disciple-frenzied berserker. As a master I tend to try to concentrate on the roleplay only (remmember "Amber", the RpG without dice ?). But usually you get a mix of all. Some who are there for the roleplay and some which are there for the munchkin. More than often, the munchkin in my campaign end up more or less the guardian of the roleplayer, which in turn by their relationship they build tend to be far more powerful due to their social connection, and tend to solve problem without using "raw" power as in strength. It is funny to see because most munchkin don't realize that even if they could wipe the roleplayer with 2 attacks, or fry them, or whatnot, they are de facto "weaker" in all sense than the one which build a social net in the roleplaying session. So that way everybody is satisfied.
Even if you disallow getting buoyancy through air as "not heavier than air" I rest my CASE : bird are NOT lighter than air, and as far I can tell birds were known to fly before the 19th century. I am pretty sure also we can find example of parachute or wing-like contraption test way before the wright brother. So NO, what was known to be impossible was not flight, it was controlled flight with the engine available. And before the advance in engineering and motor before the 19th century, yes, de-facto controlled flight was impossible. The wright brother amassed known science on flight, and the motor advancement, saw a breakthrough and went for it. I will not lessen what they did. But it is wrong to say as the GP that "flight was thougth to be impossible". It was not. Bird are witness.
Quantum Cryptography in that case is using the normal cryptographic method , just use a secure line to exchange the private key. But once the data are stored and the public key is known, it does not matter whether the private key has been transmitted on secure line or NOT. It is only a matter of cracking the crypto-algorithm itself which is then as weak against quantum computer factorisation.
The only way to avoid that would be to get ride of public/private key system altogether, and use an OTP as key transmitted on a secure QC line.
But in the very end, QC is only a way of transmission without eavesdropping. It is NOT an encryption algorithm.
Quote "150 years ago people thought it was impossible to fly in a machine that was heavier than air. "/quote
Actually , no, people ALREADY knew it was possible to fly with machine/animals heavier than air (Montgolfier/hot balloon are far older than the 19th century, and bird are clearly heavier than air). What was thougth to be impossible was to build a machine with a motor which could enable CONTROLLED flight. But a serie of advance end of 19th century ended that, particulary on the motor side. The wright brother seized the occasion and using SCIENCE and AVAILABLE ENGINEERING made the first flight human-controlled airplane.
They say to you that their hobby is painting/music/walking/repairing old car/gardening/making reduced model etc... And they seem to think that their hobby are perfectly acceptable. But as soon as you say you like to program stuff, they don't understand how this would be a hobby. They mostly fail to recognize that every one of us has something in common : the joy of act of creation. The fact that our hobby entail creating something immaterial and full of "logic" does not matter. It is still a joy.
Would not that be quite dangerous for epileptic ? What about an epileptic, getting a crisis AND omitting at the same time. Guaranteed drowning in one own puke, followed by a civil lawsuit against the government? What about other condition which could threaten life if you start puking (I am not a biologist/doctor so there might be none but I ask) ?
This is only valid if there is an infinite increasing advancement in science and application possible. I never understood why people can think this is probable. More probably there will be a point where advancement go against the limit of what is biologically and physically possible, measurable or doable. This make far more sense than science allowing incremental enhancement for ever.
This asymptotic point would then be where all civilization comes to the same amount of technical advancement. In other word, a civilization 10K or 100K older than another one would not have much more advancement than a more recent one if both are near the asymptote.I am not saying that WE are anywhere in view of the asymptote, we might actually still be far off, I am saying that potentially older civilization might already have reached it.
In such asymptotic case you then have two situation :
1)the limit of the asymptote is above & beyond what allow a civilization to explore the universe/galaxy, then it is really strange we did not see anybody yet.
2) no matter what the asymptote bind us to our own solar system or maybe 1 or 2 solar system away. Self reproducing probe, arch, are a dream beyond the power of any civilization.
Despite all what we wish, point 2) might actually be more probable than we would like. And this would both neatly explain WHY we never saw anybody or anybody will ever see us, despite the universe being teeming with life.
In other word, the universe would be an infinite series of isolated island of life.
The paradox is that if they have a few thousand or hundred of thousand year ahead of us, then they should have at least by probe or similarly conquered or explored this galaxy, or send a lot of radio signal. But we see nothing.
IMHO a simple way to resolve the paradox is that no species has the raw material or the scientific knowledge to ever send self reproducing probe to explore the galaxy. We might not be alone but we will never meet each other and stay in our small island of life.
In your scenario with the moped your body would take the full blown 60kmh deceleration onto the pavement. or on the car front. At least with those small car a bit would be taken by the structure, even if it is minimal, it is certainly better than on a moped.
Killing remotely with a button rpessing is always controversial and certainly place the level at which people are willing to do it lower than bombing them in a place/artillery, lower again then firing a rifle, and lower again than using a knife/sword and lower again than using your fist.
The story of vitamin C is that it got a "layman" name and this is why it is named explicitely so. But many of the compound you see in a list with organic name don't really have a layman name. Or were derivate of such compound. Do you REALLY think the FDA and other local administration would allow poison to be sold in fast food even in small quantity ? The fact is the following : * those are mostly conservant, anti oxydant, flavor or colorant * they are in small quantity and are not poisonous/do not pose a health risk at the quantity they are.
And before you nail me by saying "yeah but if you take them at higher quantity they might be deadly" , well as far as I know even vitamin C has god a LD 50 (lethal dosis at which statistically 50% of a population die), even through it cannot be reached with oral absorption. Everything kill you if it taken in hgih enough quantity. It is all a mater of dose.
There is nothing they want to hide you with strange name organic compound, it is mostly they do not have other layman name.
I took organic chemistry so I understand what the ingredient are (at least on the basic structural level) and can pronunce them very well;).
Anyway the argument is a bad one (and remind me of the argument of people saying "oh god they are adding chemicals in our food")
If you took normal organic growing food and we told you the list of stuff inside it, you would not understand half of it, still that would not make it more or less dangerous. 2-oxo-L-threo-hexono-1,4- lactone-2,3-enediol is an example of it. Naturally I could call it L-ascorbate too. Or maybe vitamin C. The problem are not that people don't understand what the smallest ingredient part in ppm or milli% of their food composition is, the problem is that people ignore totally the composition of the main ingredient, like fat, and refuse to do sport, and eat a lot during the day way way more than is necessary for their activities, and not equilibrated. It is a LIFESTYLE problem. It ain't one signle factor but a combination of many. And no, the ingredient you can't pronunce without having being in university ain't the problem.
As far as I recall they only do this when this is done with public fund or by public official within their work time. Could you please care to show that they indeed sued private persons which did a bit of proselytism using private fund ?
