Tron is an OS? I thought Tron was a simple program, written only to destroy the MCP.
Well... if you think an OS has to occupy 2GB of your disk space, and lots of bloatware, spyware, adware and malware, you'd be disappointed with TRON, or other Japanese products.
These Japs keep it simple, and their products are great. I still think a good WindowsXP type of OS can be built for less than 30MB - no registry, active directory, Kerberos and all that crap.
Atleast now, IF SCO wins, we can fall back on this Japanese stuff. TRON - you say? Cool TRON it is : The Reliable OS Now! And if TRON is anything like Japanese cars or electronics, that'll be a nice cherry as well.
Whatever happened when Bride visited Japan, I wonder?
2MM will last 10 coders for 4 years at an income of 50,000$ each.
It's not just money or the no. of years that matters. How many new users has Netscape got, under AOL? Marc even tried to claim that browser innovation was dead! (he might have spoken Bill's mind).
If Mozilla doesn't continue to get new users and features, AOL would put out some spin and completely kill the whole thing. And remember AOL made $750 mn from MS - 2 mn is less than.03% of that money.
Running mozilla.org for 10 years isn't great, building up a loyal userbase is. AOL fails on trust and loyalty, but so would any other American firm in it's place, I suppose. The only hope left is now Opera. -
Wait a minute, there are 10 coders working on Mozilla and 450 (down 10% from 500) working on Netscape
Therein lies the tragedy - AOL has already made up it's mind to kill Netscape - why not disband the entire team?
Why have 45 Netscape developers for 1 Mozilla developer, when Mozilla users are more than 100 per Netscape user?
It's pretty clear AOL is just caving to the MS arm-twisting; doing that to Netscape, the one good American software that really scared the shit out of MS is - well, unpardonable. It's the exact opposite of freedom, and standing up to be counted.
$2 mn. for 10 coders for the Mozilla project isn't much, after you consider other expenses. I think AOL is acting as I'd predicted some time back - quick death for Netscape, slow poison to Mozilla, and surrender to the IE devil...
But then, to expect better from a company that settled a lawsuit with MS (for the latter's guilty conduct, mind you) is a bit too far.
Just mention the word Matrix, and it's all a great new revolutionary idea! Doesn't matter if the actors in the film have 'real' problems, if it's just fiction with zero fact etc.. just drop the buzzword Matrix! and Hey Presto! - it's new stuff.
I mean, since even the UN seems to be asking everyone to leap-frog into this stuff, and we have surveillance enabled - it's a killer combn. right?
Seriously though, I believe there's a huge gap between REALITY and SCIENTIFIC ADVANCEMENT. Which advancement can guaranty zero casualties during war? None.... let's get some dose of reality now.
Since it's more than likely that our good friends from R*AA and MS etc.. are gonna be astroturfing this site, and building their strategies based on some of the posts - methinks it wud be nice not to post any bright ideas.
Look what MS did to Schnazzle recently! OMG: Google's taken off the article entirely. I'll dig it up shortly anyways.
Is to make a distro - okay use an existing distro, add your MP3s collection. Give it a name - MP3Linux sounds good, I hope no one else has a trademark on that.
That's about it - get your indie group to keep adding MP3s with ever new kernel release, and you'll make a pile before MS releases LongHorn.
What this proves is: 1. People using Linux make more money, and save more money as well. 2. I've never heard of a Windows Beer Hike - guess after spending money for Windoze, there's nothing left. 3. Linux users are sensible - they really meet real people, and do real things - not NetMeetings, Virtual tours...
I'm planning to start something similar where I live. More later..
Most people (Judge Jackson included) get emotional and condemn Microsoft summarily, without giving them credit where due. Here's a little guide, how to treat MS fairly:
1. When throwing an egg, ensure it's a golden egg. 2. Don't say Windoze sucks. Be specific. Say "Windows 95 is fast, but doesn't have USB. Win98 sucks bad, no security. WinNT4 is actually good - no wonder you withdrew support. Win2K supports USB, but breaks a lot of code. Win2K also gives us useless DRM. WinXP Home sucks, and doen't include networking. WinXP PRo sucks bigtime - lots of Spyware, builtin lousy fiewall, builtin DRM enabled CD writing s/w etc..........." 3. Don't say ".Net is complex" Say instead " Please explain.Net, and tell us why your losy mktg team removed the.Net brand from seeral products."
and so on... Be fair to them - they spend $5bn every year for R&D, generate lots of Linux jobs, make more people hate the US by their attitude and behavior, etc. Praise them for all this.
I think Germany can take credit for being the first country to understand the true implications of SCO vs IBM and properly shut them up. Throwin pie isn't as classy as getting an injunction to stop the FUD. -
While file-open speeds are important and might give some indication of the speed of other operations,
Okay.. I'll qualify it even more: to measure the speed, I type c:\ winword testfile.doc This measures the time taken for winword.exe to load, plus the time taken to load the document test.doc. This is the speed that makes sense to most users. -
These speeds are meaningless unless you give us some context. I assume you're giving relative speeds at performing some task since both the MS Office speeds are 100.
All speeds are in seconds - MS Office speeds are pegged at 100 for scaling. For Word, I measured 'file- open speed' for 10-page files (there's little point in measuring 'editing' speeds). For Excel I opened 6 page spreadsheets with a bit of formulae. Again 'updating' and 'editing' speeds were not measured. -
if you need to print a paragraph, then abi might work
Is a 64-page proposal with snaked-columns and pictures and graphs, a paragraph???
if you need a simple spreadsheet, then sure try out gnumeric.
For your info., Gnumeric supports the same size as MS Excel - it in fact gives you a simple way to extend beyond 65536 elements - it's Excel which locks out users from this.
if you'd like something cross platform that's supported by a major hardware and software vendor, then go for OpenOffice or its derivitive(s).
Why? 'Cos OpenOffice is something holy? I admit it's a great piece of code, but choice of app should not be based on names or compatibility with silly MS bloatware. Both AbiWord and Gnumeric can safely and painlessly exchange documents from Windows systems - no problems at all.
In fact, RC1 does state 'more' compatibilty with Windoze files now. Chew that. -
It was covered at Slashdot as well.
Nothing new here, is there??
-
In either case, although Sakamura would probably have made some money, assuming $43 billion is just silly.
You're forgetting Service Packs, Anti-viruses, Firewalls, CD Burners, Stop-Spam-Solutions, Protocol-Licensing, Patent royalties etc. etc.
-
Besides, what devices run than OS ? anyone know ?
More important, does it contain SCOde? If it doesn't, well that's great news. We can make it run on any device.

the Chinese will all ready have colinized Mars.
and yet, NASA will not trust the Chinese - so they'd send an unmanned drone after them!
-
I thought that was the exclusive job of SCO!! Oh.. I see now - SCO satnds for Space Control Organisation??
-
You mean to tell me all of those billions of dollars over the past 30 years have gone to nothing more than unimaginative uses of existing techology?
Sad, but true. All the imaginative uses have been bought by SCO, and we're left with nothing but Service Packs.

Replying to own post is bad form, but I was pissed when I found that Google completely removed this page from their news site. This is from yahoo!
Microsoft tries to stop Schnazzle
Now, to investigate further at Google!
