I agree. The whole charm of Linux is that it brings the thrill of programming and 'personalisation' back to the Personal Computer. Having a unified interface is like saying " I want to be different like everyone else".
That said, I'm also concerned such articles still get patronised at Slashdot.
"They pay interns very well, but they are expected to pull 55+ work weeks, and have no weekends. "
I can't think of a better way to completely alienate regular employees. They must be worried sick, trying to keep their jobs, with 'cheap' competition at hand. This prbably also explains the quality of MS code.
College students are gifted with high intellect and thin wallets. The combination is too good for a manipulator such as MS to resist. The few crumbs MS thros at the interns must mean a lot.

If you're keen, mail me the time and place of your birth (as accurately as possible). I'll mail you a report for free, along with a chart. I can be reached at sundaram_kr@hotmail.com. Normally Indians are concerned only about the 'positive' aspects in astrology.

I wish I could give you a straight answer, but my knowledge is sketchy and limited. A solar eclipse occurs when the sun is trapped between 'Raagu' and 'Kethu' in the astrological chart.
The chart itself is a box of 12 positions and 'horoscopes' have 2 such boxes. Time is measured in units of 24 minutes - 60 units per day. The 'planets' move around these 12 positions in time frames determined by their periodicity. The Sun moves 1 position per month and the moon moves 12 positions per month.
All 'events' and 'fortune' are governed by the relative placement of the 'planets' within the box. It is a complex science (some call it an art) and there are numerous 'experts' on this subject. It's also interesting to note that by performing 'good karma' (a purely Indian concept, not the Slashdot meaning) one can mitigate the ill effects during 'bad' times. I'll send you some references and contacts if I find your mail id.

Indian astrology studies planets as those heavenly bodies that affect life-forms on the Earth in a 'major' way. Thus the Sun and the Moon are also planets as per the Indian definition. Two planets (Raagu & Kethu) are also defined - these do not denote physical planets, rather, the clock-wise and the anti-clockwise 'spin' of the Earth.
The system also defines 27 stars (the nearest ones from the Earth) and a 60-year cycle. Under this system: It is possible to accurately determine 'events' such as eclipses, birth & death, progeny, well-being, etc. There is no need for 'leap-year' correction, since a year can be 'born' at mid-day, mid-night or anytime in between.
My original post seems to have geerated a lot of interest - more than any other perhaps; yet, my post is rated 1 and many 'replies' at 3!! Amazing!! Where did I go wrong?? Atleast I should've got +3 Interesting?
They do research on pancakes, moon mining, curry (chicken tikka masala is the national dish) and other inane "foreign" things. But when it comes to making an Operating System or even choosing one for their schools, they simply turn to America and say, "Give us Microsoft". Amazing.
I don't want MS to be a part of it. Their prime aim seems to be to prevent anyone from truly innovating. I'd even suggest we pay MS to stay off Internet2 - say something like $10bn.
How is spam from MS legal? Am I an MS customer cos I've bought Windows? If I've bought an OEM edition, I'm a HP customer not an MS customer. So Billy will have to send mails to the OEMs who'd have to forward them to me, their customers. Else, it'd be illegal spam.
has made my 'head' 'spin' too much. Fact is, I'm not convinced. SCSI has existed longer than IDE, and the chips and tech had that much longer to mature. Testing SCSI should therefore be faster and cheaper, IMHO
"speeding up testing, as a way to reduce testing costs."
Shouldn't SCSI drives be faster to test? Like, the testing commands can be integrated into the drives - most SCSI firmware support several commands.. Secondly it's easier to connect 15 SCSI drives than 15 IDE drives. IDE drives have to be tested for master and slave options as well. I guess WD just has the average Joe in mind, with this marketing spin.
1. Is there anything to relate drive geometry and the interface? 2. Testing time is a function of prodn. capacity. Obviously there'd be 10 times as many ATA drives as SCSI. 3. Spindle speed and drive interface - any connection?
More marketing spin here than drive spin. Probably enough to win the desktop PC market. If MS can spin, WD can do better. What next? ATA-XP drives specially tuned for XP??
What happens next is "Slashdotters" will be considered potential terrorists!! Simple reasoning: why would a website help you build personal submarines and personal rockets?? I see a new slashdot-race developing - everyone who values personal security - better start reading slashdot.
Why? Because nobody is trustworthy anymore! What if my BOFH sysadmin builds a personal submarine and threatens me (the boss)? Can you see it now? We all need peronal submarines, rockets, nuclear reactors and personal 1024-bit encryption to our grey cells. Till then we can't be secure.

With enough marketing 'spin' and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, two identical drives can be made to perform better.
1. Is there anything to relate drive geometry and the interface?
2. Testing time is a function of prodn. capacity. Obviously there'd be 10 times as many ATA drives as SCSI.
