    I think your boss has been reading too much M$ C# Sales spiel (those 'specs' sound like a MS quote to me). Do what most tech do, agree with management, and pretend your implementing all the their 'tech strategies'. Then do it how it should be done.

    I assume you grew up on a language and know what your doing (well at least know how to RTFM to find out)

    Their are planety of web sites out their that report they're running ISS, but if u look closely it they also report Linux as their OS. ie boss told tech to use MS ISS and they just edited apaches conf ;-)

    you could attack tubes to feed them, but em in a bath of contuctive ooze, plug their brain into a VR world (called Matrix) and vola you got ur self a nice little battery, that should solve the western worlds energy problem

    Yes i seen this, i got an old p1 on my net doing NAT from eth0 to ppp0 w/ simple firewall rules.
    (Linux 2.4 IPTables)
    what confused me was when it kernel paniced dumped a whole load of stack and register contents to screen and halted, dead
    yet still continued nat

    so i left and continued to read /. ;-)

    but dont all the processes get killed so why did ppp0 stay up if pppd was killed ?

    hmm probably but in most cases there are trade off, eg spider 8 legs, insect 6 but has two wings. could grow a membrain like bats, but ur bone and body structure would need to be more light, and muscle structure will need to change to

    id imagine for u to get wings (ignoring the fact ur adult so it too late for u, this need to be done while/b4 egg divides) you will loose ur arms, and since it is current theory that our hands (as we made more complex tools) are the driving force to our intelligence, your offspring would proabably go the way of the birds, intelectualy.

    even in this case it involved a speices loosing body parts (limbs) to become another, while it maybe possible to get to wings, you could keep ur hands like bats, but i guess due to the need for light wieght (and less complex hands?) they would be considerable reduced in function.

    but why dont u see plains, hand gliders and such as human evolution towards flight. u think we could do that 1000 years ago, no.

    when u buy MS (and most propriatory) s/w 'box' of the shelf what do u think ur paying for?
    the CD?, the Menual?, the 'Software'?
    well its that little piece of green paper w/ the hologram on.

    In short MS dont sell s/w and u dont buy it. MS sells licence for _you_ to use the software, and u cant sell that right on.

    If you think you own a copy of win95 (paid or not) you are very much mistaken.

    I have to agree, it is nice for linux/wine to support windows and i look forward to being able to play all my games in linux w/ wine (or native).

    But ur forgetting what rose PC+MS to power, it was all the software available and its marketing. realy we should work on our own apps,s/w and shout out abo ut those.
    So wine is nice, but not any more important then any other linux app. and we (community/ppl who care) realy need to work on pr and more office & user type apps. and most importantly linux Docs, HowTo's and Tutorials to help educate others

    I wont be getting/trying any of the Lindows/Mandrake Gaming Edition linux flavours ever i disagree with the whole idea, linux is linux(or unix) but niether are windows and thank god.
    want more/better games, push the openGL2 and openAL movements.

    There are two main contenders for possible replacements for X, but both are not ready at all.

    1. theres the berlin project, mentioned on /. b4
    2. the Linux Kernel FB is pretty much ready to build a wm for, all though i dont know if any one has, i know there is a widget lib though, wslib or something like that.

    You say the US used hardly any ground troops and that they are not needed. Well I think your wrong have you forgoten about the Northen Alliance and other anti-taliban forces these were the US ground troops.

    America simply bomb taliban positions and the Northen Alliance moved in to capture it.

    Now I think the reason the US didn't loose many wo/men was because they got them some pawns to do the dirty work.

    Take capture some where you have to take control/command of the people in that area. Now you can't do that with long distance weapons like missiles, you need people. If you had andriod like bots then maybe they could take control. But i dont think they (the bots) would find it as easy to control the people/masses then human would. (I talking about a 'peaceful' control the Terminator type where u just kill em all)

    I have a P1 200 (not even mmx) it is now my home lan server. it does
    *NAT - shares its modem internet connection on lan
    *Samba - It s Win NT Domain Controller which the win boxes have to login in to. so thing like office are run from the server saving space on desktop
    *MP3 - stores all our mp3's, jpg, gif n stuff
    *NIS/NFS - using NIS, NFS and autoFS u can login to any of the linux boxes and ur home dir is with u
    *Apache - nothing major, playing, but if u can guess my ip u'll get apache con grate page (ip changes every 2 hours =)
    *X - blackbox wmaker and enlightenment this is just to give and extra box for playing stuff like freeciv, battalia, bzflag (yep bzflag)
    (i know enlightenment not light wieght but screen is VGA (640x480) and the way e16 tiles the virtual screen is realy handy)

    This old P1 is thus the most used (via lan, as opposed to keyboard) pc on our net, and it does every thing quite happily.
    It running Debian GNU/Linux Woody. Kernel 2.4.10.

    Now imagine doing all that w/ an MS Win NT OS (or 9x). you'll be lucky if it boots up and is even slightly responsive, never mind trying to run all those above mentioned services.

    But it'll only have enough clout if enough servers are involved, because although we know 125k server is small compared to the millions out there, it still and impressive enough number

    That use to be me. (love linux, uses word)

    But now i'v learnt latex (but not how to spell). and i must say all in all; writing a plain text file not worring about formating or anything, makes latex much faster in the actual writing of the document then when i used word. And i love that fact you have to compile your document as a programer watching the meaningless stuff scroll up the screen for the latex and dvips commands is just fulfilling =)
    and tex is about 25 yrs old.

    for the uninitiated copy this into a blank file:

    You could use heat exchangers, which is basically a nifty bit of pluming or maybe some h/w.
    but basically cold does not exist (scientifically) it is mearly a lack of heat. all you have to do is remove the heat from the room to heat the house with, taking heat from then room (ie takes energy out) would make it cold =)

    I no guru on whats available, the above came from my physics a-level, and i'm sure some one will point out a mistake and/or expand the idea with more detail

    I'd like ms apps just for compatability with those not yet enlightend to the existance of ne thing else then MS.

    but i would hava a hard time trusting any ms code to be running it as root, or even installing it to my /usr or /usr/local stuff with access to my libs.

    I'll probably setup a MS user account and run ms s/w chroot or even in a virtual machine (in bsd theres jail(), i forget what it was for linux there was a /. about it a few months ago), that way i can firewall that machines address.
    (it obvious that at min winME and media player have chats with the ms server if they spot ur online)

    i not worried about ms progs crashing, cause i trust my kernel wont let that interfior with the rest of my sys, so i can go about doing what ever i was doing and ignore it

    and hey if ms have to learn to dev for linux they might catch on how ur supposed to write a proper OS, API and code

    The problem is if you got to the joe on and try talk to them about alternatives like linux, they just say 'linux wha?'

    i recon a linux* user (*or another reasonable i386 OS, eg BSD) in each town should go running around naked shouting linux* of the top of their heads. that should get the word stuck in peoples minds, and a few of them might just look it up and find ooh a free OS, thats better then windows

    In my opinion windows only advantage over other OS's is games, but if they stop Dx for win95 they loose that edge

    I'v recently noticed that my console login prompt has changed (it now say Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 ...) This if any thing servers as a strong reminder of who admins mine (and your) systems, it aint me (or you) its the people who dev apt/dpkg and the package maintainers.

    So you have to be able to trust these people, that they are honest, and do what they say, they of good character etc
    If any thing is found to break their Social Contract and they just ignore it, that would compramise peoples trust in them.

    although ever time i login i get a message reminding me that they accept no liability. i still use debian cause i trust them.

    of course this idea doesn't always hold. i dont in the slightest trust MS but i still have a windows partition (i still have one or two progs that wine dont run). i always have a huge feeling of paranoia when use windows and am online, i closed source you dont whats it doing and you dialogs poping up like 'media player has found a new codec to download' WTF i wasn't listening to music ?!!

    I using mozilla 9.5, and it dont load right for me, and I do have flash ok, since i watch a lot of flash shows/cartoons.
    unless these large blue outline rectangles with the little arrow in the bottom corner are supposed to be like that?

    maybe after being slashdotted they removed all the bandwidth soakers like flash, big images and sounds

    and assuming that they page layout moz shows is how they intended I must say it horrible.
    (and if any of u think i should have the newer mozilla i will as soon as apt gets it for me =)

    USB HID, (Human Interface Devices) is in linux and if any of these h/w devices you talk about uses it then they would work. most usb keyboards, joysticks, etc talk through. although these two examples do have further drivers for more functionality.

    also as far GUIs X is probably better then Windows, purely because you can sit your own WM (Window Manager) or run something e16 with a theme that has the disabled in mind. i dont know a WM or e-themes which are for this purpose, but your a head then with windows, just cause you can truely customize them.

    any way i played windows accessability options and all they seem to provide is a magnifier, realy large fonts for widgets, and 'high contrast' colours.
    you can do all this easy with [ctrl]+[alt]+[+]
    and kcontrol (for kde, but other WM have similar app)
    there are other stuff in windows access control panel, but i beleive that nearly all of can be achieved with the normal linux (or *nix) apps

    why? because although nix/linux dev peeps may not have the disabled in mind, they do love to implement features fun and/or useful. because thats the way we all like it, lots of buttons to push and things to tweak and play with.

    Just think if we has the same level (or more) interface with a computer has they do with each other, imagine how easy it would be to hack boxes.

    the slow part of hacking system would be your interface to it, and bottle necks in there (eg keyboard) i never tried my self, but imagine a good original hack requires a lot of prep work, eg writing tools, poking into your tcp/ip and stuff.
    and during the actual hack you dont have time to make quick changes, probably need to abort write your tools some more and start again.
    where as with this you could hack stuff like, with the full utility of your human ingenuity, instinks , imagination etc

    not only that, as well as hacking other machines we could try hack into each other, with the strong of mind or skill winning.
    just imagine what future version of script kiddies would do with their parents, if they didn't like being sent to bed w/o supper.

    did any one see that 'Outer Limits' episode where every one bar a few with brain disorders. had a live net connection to their brains, and they all got a virus. It was upto the few w/o the link to try save the others from crainial overload.

  20. Beyond Woody? on Debian Freeze Process Update · · Score: 1

    I like most people i know have my sources.list entries all pointing to 'testing'. So when woody moves "down" to stable, we'll all be getting a new dist.

    I know SID stays at unstable so what will the new dists (or Debian 4) be called?
    and when/how will this work do we stay with woody till a new testing branch is ready or will we be inline with SID for a bit?

    I dont realy care about what goes into stable it packages are just too old for a desktop (great for servers and production sys) I am very interested in hearing about the next debian, beyond woody.
