Fedora 10 Released
·
· Score: 5, Informative
How long ago was this "previous yum experience" the last several years have seen vast improvements in yum.
Problem is when Fedora first jumped off everyone tried it then formed an opinion based on 5 years ago. Most of these opinions spider across slashdot by people who haven't installed fedora since F2. When i was running Fedora a simple yum update command would finish in about 3-5 seconds. I'm also using a p4/2gb.
From the yum FAQ: How is the speed of yum compared to APT-RPM?
yum automatically checks the repository every time you perform a command, except when run in shell mode, while APT only checks it when you run 'apt-get update' manually. This causes it to appear slower than it is. If you want yum to run from cache instead of checking the repositories, run 'yum -C '. See the man page for details.
yum now uses sqlite for its back-end database by default. This results in an edge in speed over older versions of yum. Beginning with Fedora Core 4, yum contains significant improvements that make it faster and more capable than older versions.
In general to posters. If you haven't installed an OS in 5 years would you mind not commenting on it unless you state when you used it. People out there get the impression nobody fixed yum when it was fixed 7-8 versions ago.
There is no doubt there are bad people that would like to do bad things to others in the world, but why anyone takes this kind of propaganda seriously is beyond me.
It's more than likely the amount of funding he gets is directly proportional to the amount of fear mongering produced.
This is probably why you didn't hear much about terror attacks before 9/11 yet after the building goes down everyone screams its the governments fault for not telling us about these threats. Not everything is propaganda, sometimes people really do want your ass.
Right. Its not the way id handle things. It creates incentive for the informant to work, but could cause corruption. But then on the other hand if you pay them a flat rate why dont they just sit down and party? You'd have to pay them more if they caught someone to create incentive then you're back at square one only spent more money for the same result.
They got people alot more experienced than us figuring this stuff out. i'll leave it up to them until they catch them doing something wrong.
Just cause someone gets paid for the arrest doesn't mean they'll lie. I doubt someone would risk 5 years jail time for $100-500 or whatever they "compensated" him. Sending a bunch of people to jail just cause you want to get paid isn't something you should expect of people. The system will sort it out and find out what happened. But until then I'm going to suspect if you have 5 buckets of urine, gas masks and a homemade caltrop to disable buses you're probably up to no good. but hey thats just me following logic.
I've just informed on you and told the police what you plan to do. You might want to watch your door for a while.
See you in court then #698728 when they find nothing in my house. See how the system works? Sure you can lie but when an informant gives someones plans then they have all the tools to carry out those plans. These guys look guilty and you know it. From here the system will sort out whats lies and what isnt to the best of its ability.
On Saturday afternoon, he displayed a number of the confiscated items: a gun, throwing knives, a bow and arrows, flammable liquids, paint, slingshots, rocks and buckets of urine.
"We know these things were going to be used as weapons," Fletcher said, a charge protesters and their advocates vigorously disputed.
Fletcher however, stressed that he and other agencies had informants planted inside this and other groups for "a long period of time."
There was an informant inside this organization that told authorities what was planned. They raided these extremists houses and found what they wanted and stopped them. Maybe you should just admit you wish they'd pulled it off, in sighted a riot so people like you can use it for more propaganda about how its a police state run by George Bush
Sorry good guys 1, hippies 0.
I just heard on the news they were planning to insight a riot according to an undercover informant and they confiscated a machete, a hatchet, throwing knives, axes, bolt cutters, equipment used in rappelling - and three 5-gallon buckets of urine.
But hey, dont let that get in your way. please continue telling us about free speech and peaceful demonstrations.
Seriously, if the separatists in Georgia actually wanted to form their own country, I could say that it is ARGUABLE that Russia's actions are justified
So if Americans are rioting in Canada and Canada squelches the rioters its okay for the US to invade Canada?
I'm with you.
Verizon's coverage is leaps and bounds above AT&Ts where I am. yet I find myself debating weather to get on AT&T just for rollover and iphone. When I talk to my girl at work our Calls can get dropped like 6 times in two hours. I literally have to turn my head a certain way and if i forget, bang call d/c'd
While the workphone (verizon cell) has never had one dropped call even when im out in the company car going out on remote ranches. Shame I have to choose between a network or a phone.
And yes, many people don't think of Obama as black, because he isn't. He is half white and half black - and a whole to neither. So all you "Obama hates all white people" folks out there, do you honestly believe he hates his mother and half of himself??
I dont think he hates his grandmother or mother. but could he think that black people are "owed" or deserve more attention and programs? Most (all?) black speakers in the past haven't really been for equality, but more for give us at the cost to you. So its only fair people are skeptical about Obamas intentions.
This could very well be a man who isn't for equality but political revolution. To some of you that sounds attractive. To me that scares the hell out of me. I'm afraid one day we will no longer be encouraged to be individuals and destroy our human spirit instead we will be encouraged to do what is best for the hive. After all I'm only one man, why should I be happy when society suffers? How very evil of me to want to be happy. We've seen that when social programs roll in so do the leeches from other countries to take advantage of it. That result would be that the U.S. no longer is a haven for hard working foreigners who are educated that come here to work and compete. It would inturn be a haven for the lazy foreigners who come here to drink beer.
Many of you see Socialism as a utopia, to others of us nothing sounds more terrible than looking alike, thinking alike and living alike cause that system is best for the hive.
Instead of modding me down how about replying and making me and others like me understand.
not likely. Yahoo is really bad about voice chat upgrades. they wont even stop the booters. Vista was even broken for the longest time (is it still broken?)
I love yahoo's chat community and RTP compression but they've had the same version of unix messenger for like 10 years. dont expect them to fix chat for anyone. Which sucks. I wish someone smarter than me would reverse engineer it better than erika did by using fragmented wine libs.
check out gyach enhanced if you want webcam/voice support but its extremely buggy and probably wont work for you.
Sure, Red Hat puts a lot of effort into hardware support backports. But if Ubuntu, Debian, Novel and Red Hat all standardized on the same kernel releases for their six-month release cycles then hardware vendors would have one platform to target instead of four. That might very well increase vendor cooperation - even to a sufficient extent that Red Hat would get better hardware support than they have now with less investment.
RedHat/Fedora dont want that kinda software anyway. If we have a "standard" that encourages everyone to just make binarys that work on linux instead of encouraging them to give us the source so we can compile it ourselves. See thats the difference shuttleworth doesn't seem to care as much for open code as say fedora which doesn't include anything questionable. Fedora goes out of its way to make things hard for hardware vendors and software vendors so they will be encourage to do things our way instead of us trying to work around them. they work around us.
You can make the case that hurts desktop linux in the now but what about the tomorrow? Java is now open after redhat got icetea out the door, adobe is now trying to find alternatives thanks to things like swfdec, intel opening specs, HP, etc. When we create a free alternative it encourages them to do things our way or lose market share.
Just a fundamental difference in how these two distros see the future. RedHat wants to be synonymous with OSS and Shuttleworth seems his main focus is making sure everyone can use a computer. Both admirable but dont expect fedora to waver with its dedication to only open source. compatibility in my opinion is key to closed source companies doing business as normal. Some of the community is trying to change that, not encourage it.
hows that wife test when she pops in her favorite game CD? does Ubuntu get "confusing" again? I guess ubuntu abandoned the desktop market cause its not idiot proof just like fedora and suse.
Point im making is a nice webpage doesn't fix everything for desktop users. How about the ubuntu dev's start contributing the kinda code suse and redhat do to gnome and kde respectively? Does everyone go around saying Ubuntu abandonded the server market cause they dont have hardly any kernel contributions? Fedora is for a different segment of user. If ubuntu wants to be desktop linux then they have to deal with all the problems that come with that including fixing the "bugs" windows users have like "how come yahoo voice doesn't work" or how come thier favorite.exe is failing. This is a very hard userbase to take care of and redhat and suse know that from experience. If ubuntu wants the title of desktop linux then they have to deal with it when people aren't happy.
This abandoning the desktop talk really annoys me. Desktop is just a buzzword all the while redhat maintains and writes half of gnome and desktop software, where you think network manager came from or pulse audio, the suspend features in gdm, UI, who funds and built freedesktop.org? Just cause they dont have a sticker that says "desktop linux" doesn't mean they abandoned it. look up redhats contributions http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RedHatContributions sometime.
It's quite simple really they dont want fresh OSS software to be associated with the red hat brand. Fedora will have bugs and be considered "unstable" to many who are looking for no noticeable bugs in thier OS. If fedora was called redhat desktop people would be going around saying i tried to install "red hat" and the instal failed.. they wont differentiate redhat desktop from redhat server in mindshare, it will redhat will lose its brand as a stable serious company. This way I get my fast moving OS and i know what it is, yet newbies wont start branding redhat as a P.O.S cause it didn't install on their emachine.
This is exactly it.
America is just now doing this? I was returned from Canada and they searched my luggage, laptop, read private conversations, opened letters all cause i was going to be staying 2 months which was too long of a vacation/job for them apparently. The guy was just a prick and didn't want anyone taking jobs. Canada is terrible for this but on Slashdot everything is the big bad USA. I'm so sick of the slant on slashdot. All countries do this its their right to refuse what type of people in their country. Some agents turn away illegal Mexicans cause they're scared of them taking jobs, some customs agents dont like the idea of a foreigner getting paid more than them.
Careful playing WoW with verizon. I was looking to get a data plan at Verizon and the girl at the store said its 50 cents for every MB over 5 gigs.. One WoW user got billed almost 20 GRAND.
You'll understand why I'm going with sprint just incase. Not to mention its $10 cheaper with SERO. Verizon has better coverage but aslong as it works at home and work thats all I need to use it at. it doesn't need to be as "mobile" as my phone which i'll probably go with verizon for.
im aware of that. i spent yesterday telling someone they dont have a 1 gb of hard drive, they have 1gb of ram. But _everyone_ knows what google is. And i made the point that the software to run powerpoints, divx movies, flash, pdf, torrents isn't included in windows they still figured out how to get it. they can do the same in linux. We're not talking about compiling or changing variables here. we're talking about running one command here rpm -Uhv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm that will give them access to almost any application they could ever desire. If they can figure out the windows system of tracking down torrent clients and kazaa codec packs then surely they can install a livna repository.
Fedora isn't meant for some lady who isn't sure what hotmail is or types with two fingers, neither is ubuntu for that matter.. NO OS is made for people like that. they need to go through this thing called a learning curve. Fedora wasnt built for those people. neither is Ubuntu. you can't have a 6 month upgrade cycle and at the same time say its for a lady who uses two fingers to type. They need to learn some things. I'm of the opinion learning what free software is should be one of the things we encourage them to learn.. especially new users.
They find out how to install MP3 by typing... "fedora mp3" into google which returns a webpage called "How to play MP3 files in Fedora" That gives you step by step instructions with screenshots.
Hey did you know that people use to have to download winrar or winzip to unzip files? no no its true! people actually can figure out how to search the net for software. Windows users even can find things like divx on their own or what a pps, pdf or a.torrent file is or what a nero.nrg file is.
sheesh people will figure out how to type in fedora mp3, or fedora faq into google.. its okay they will figure it out i promise. "newbies" are alot more likely to search google with "fedora mp3" than sitting down at an ubuntu box and typing in "apt-get search *mp3*" or whatever the command would be to install mp3 support.
When fedora beta didn't make slashdot (not even linux section) and ubuntu beta was front page 2 days later i thought slashdot had a bias. Was kinda surprised to see this.

Canonical barely does any marketing (ever saw an add from Ubuntu?)
