Whereas knowing that most (US) people watch American Idol says something quite sad.
OT I know, but can someone explain to me the vitriolic hatred of American Idol that seems so rampant here? It's a show where some of the best vocal singers in the country are discovered. What offends slashdotters so much about that? Personally, I happen to enjoy the show.
I suspect "the haters" just hate it cause it's popular. I happen to enjoy listening to good singers.
Rant over.
BTW, just to be somewhat on topic, censorship in the digital age is futile. China is learning that this is inevitable.

I've been doing PHP programming for years, and I really enjoyed working with it as a scripting language.
That said, I started playing around with Ruby on Rails. Honestly, simple tasks like database access is so much simpler to handle in RoR it's just amazing. Creating database driven web sites, with one-to-many and many-to-many relationships is at least 10x quicker than in PHP. You have to get used to the MVC style of programming of course.
I'm still doing PHP at work, but at some point will push for a switch. Check this out to see a very simple walkthrough of creating a simple web site.
Just a fan, in no way am I involved with the Ruby on Rails project itself.
I like the traffic feature, but I'm not sure it "trounce"s Google maps quite yet.
However, yahoo and google both fighting it out for the best mapping program results in better maps with easier to access information. We the users win! Competition is good.
Microsoft started by trying to be best buds with Firefox (web client). Now they seem to be looking at the server side. They are going after the P! Is M (MySQL) next?
Something I found interesting: the word "here" links first to the download for Adobe PDF Reader (for obvious reasons?). 2nd link is mapquest and 3rd is apple quicktime.
Except for obvious linkfarms, which I believe google has been trying to decrease their effectiveness, google bombing is fine and ultimately will self correct for anything important.
I keep seeing all these comments about "copyright violations" on youtube... is a 5 minute daily show clip a copyright violation? Is there such a thing as fair use? Does youtube (now google) have some sort of common carrier for video defense they could claim?
I'd like to see some serious commentary on this, and not just the assumption that youtube voilates copyright. I spend probably and hour a week watching stuff on youtube, and I'm sure over 95% of what I see does NOT violate any copyrights.
I just checked this out in SL and it's cool, even if there isn't a lot to check out ATM. Linden Labs should be very intersted in this sort of thing.
Currently most of 2nd life is quite mechanical. By that I mean there are plenty of landscapes and cool plants in SL, but they are all meticulously hand-crafted by people, and mostly static once placed. Imagine if you could opt to have your SL land on "living land" that would actually have it's own ecology. Water flows and wind could cause erosion, birds could carry seeds from area to area... ultimately a system of DNA could be created to handle cross-fertilization of plants and wildlife.
Maybe they could even license the Spore engine to perform some of the work for them;)
LMAO if we are on the same level, that means sitting AT A COMPUTER, killing VIRTUAL CREATURES is now a form of work.
OK, slashdot geeks. Calculate this: what is the work expenditure per hour to move your mouse back and forth enough to camp a [high level mob] in [game of your choice] and what is the income relative to said work expenditure. Extra credit for pie charts calculating relative work/income ratios for varios MMORPGs.
I have to say, FFXI is the most expensive one out there, but I still love it.
I think it shows the incredible arrogance of (most) american corporations, willing to sic lawyers on anyone who does anything that may hurt the company, free speech be damned.
Perhaps in the future, MSFT will expose a framework that allows third party media player development libraries to plug into the desktop environment, allowing other applications to use whatever libraries are currently configured to play media.
This is exactly what they should have done with IE, to allow interoperability with other browsers. This behaviour is just to unmonopolistic for Microsoft's tastes. I wouldn't hold your breath for this.
Ok, you got me. What are the other two?
Oh sure, Mr Pie-in-the-sky ... I personally just went and bought a few more cans of corn just in case.
Also, some foil-reinforcements for my hat.
How about the Yettabyte?
how is entering your house or utilizing bandwidth "giving away something something you pay for"?
explain what you no longer possess just by the mere fact of using your bandwidth?
this is such a ridiculous assertion, I suspect you may just be a troll

Just realized I didn't have noscript installed on this particular machine. Thanks for reminding me!
you misspelled "windows me"
Thank you for that comment. I thought the same thing when I saw the headline.
Wikipedia absolutely should NOT use advertising. It absolutely WILL compromise Wikipedia content eventually. It's that simple.

From whence has this "ponies" meme besieged itself upon my hurting eyes?
Seriously, does this have to do with April 1st or something?
I'm pretty sure he means "not in the same country as Linden Labs". In other words, outside the U.S.
For the record, I thought the usage was a bit strange too.
Read the 2nd last paragraph.
the prisoners were given time beforehand to come up with a strategy
Daylight savings could be viewed having a similar goal...maybe we all have planks in our eyes?

Reading those poll numbers made me depressed. Maybe I should move to Canada. Are they more intellegent up there?
