This is a better argument for a wealth tax than an estate tax.

Since we want assets to be used productively, and since the function of the government is to protect us and our property, then taxes should apply to assets (wealth) rather than income. This would encourage wealthy individuals to invest their assets in productive enterprises (making jobs) rather than, say, gold or art (no jobs).

I've gotten three Beige PowerMac G3s to run 10.2.x, but each has had installation freezes at one time or another. The advice at lowendmac and other sites has been helpful, but there is no silver bullet. Things to try:

Remove the SCSI card and any other add-ons; install on the primary IDE drive.

Remove all but the first SIMM which should be 256M.

Do a minimal install to keep it short; add the apps and printer drivers and languages later

Wait it out; sometimes the display dies but the installation proceeds. Wait a while for the CD tray to open and insert the next CD-ROM.

If you get into a situation where you can't boot, use Open Firmware. At reset use "Command + Option + O + F" to boot into Open Firmware. Type these three commands, with a Return after each:

    init-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all

Use "Command + Option + P + R" to zap PRAM, maybe more than once.

If all else fails push the little button near pci slot 1 to zap PRAM and reset firmware.

    Good luck -- keep trying.

CallPlus works great with my Nokia 6360, and can be used with any AT&T or unlocked TDMA (D-AMPS) phone. Roaming is included at the usual per minute price on the AT&T roaming network. You can get a phone number local to somewhere other than your billing address (which only matters for your callers since all long distance is included in the usual per minute price).

Zone Logic is a nice combination of state charts and autononmous agent design. It was used in the 80s and early 90s for industrial automation, and was particularly good at recovery from hardware failures.

Real-time systems depend on sensors to report the state of the outside world. These sensors often fail, putting the system in an illogical state. Zone Logic offered a nice structured way to deal with this.

I've written four production FORTH compilers for various machines, including m68k PPC and x86 (before that I wrote several threaded and direct interpreters). My compilers never manifest the stacks as stacks, and use state of the art (Briggs Chaiten) register allocators. You won't see these compilers because they are used as back end code generators for other languages! The advantage of FORTH is that the front end of the compiler can be retargeted to any machine with a FORTH compiler. The runtime system and library can be written (somewhat) portably in FORTH. It's an excellent technique, and I heartily recommend it.
