  1. Re:sun powers the world on American Solar Challenge Completed: Blue Went · · Score: 2

The fact is that fossil fuels and our current internal combustion engines are so inefficient that the big oil companies know that they'll be able to keep selling us lots of their product.

If we're talking solar or battery power, what kind of hold do they have on the consumer? Certainly not the perpetual one they do now, with our incredible dependence on gasoline and oil. Once the battery car is bought, or the house is outfitted with solar panels, the major corporation's job is over.

There's not even a remotely similar chance for recurring revenue in more efficient energy sources. And when you're all about making money, that's the bottom line.

Who are we kidding? As long as oil companies have the power and money that they do, alternative power sources will never come into their own. Think what would happen if suddenly a new technology became available and oil wasn't necessary anymore. Many *major* companies would find themselves in economic turmoil and that isn't something that those companies are ready to have happen just yet.

No matter how much better solar power, battery power, or natural gas power is, it's just not going to become prominent until some of the big players are good and ready for it to happen.

You can only do this so many times before it becomes tried and boring, like JP3. Don't even bother going.

I think the real issue here is who's holding onto your information. Would the privacy concerns be as great if it wasn't Microsoft (or some other equally malevolent corporation) doing it? I believe the concept is sound. It's just the intentions of our generous host that's in question. If there was a benevolent body willing to do this sort of thing, and *not* sell or trade any of people's private information, it wouldn't be such a big deal for them to have access to it.

I, for one, use the passport system (all my spam goes to my hotmail account :), and some of the web applications that Microsoft makes available for free are great. I'm not evangelizing Microsoft; far from it, I'm a die hard Slackware user :) But I do think that they do some good stuff. They make wicked awesome keyboards (not those small cursor key ones, the other ones).

    • Denon AVR-2800. Very good, clean sound. It does both DTS and DD decoding, and I can bi-wire my main speakers. ($1300)
    DVD Player:
    • Panasonic A-120. It's a little older than most (1 1/2 years old...it's not even on the web site anymore), but it does the job nicely. It passes a DTS bitstream, which is all I was really looking for at the time.($500)
    Television:
    • Toshiba TW40X81 A good T.V. is something that you definately shouldn't scrimp on. I agonized for 8 months over this purchase, but it's the best thing I've ever bought Widescreen baby, YEAH! ($3600)
    Speakers:
    • All my speakers are by
    • Sound Dynamics. RTS-11's for mains ($1000), RTS-7's for rears ($600), and an RTS-C2 for a center ($300). They kick ass, and compare favourably to similar sounding speakers in the price area too.
    Sub Woofer:
    • A Sub is
    • essential to quality movie-watching. It's not only about base you hear, it's about the rumbling you can feel. Mine is a Velodyne CT-100 with a 10" driver. ($750)

Looking back, I guess I spent quite a bit of money, but I don't regret a cent of it. I routinely enjoy watching DVD's at home more than going to the theater. I guess that's what it's all about, eh? :)

The human wrist simply wasn't designed to be cocked upward like most typewriters and keyboards want it to go. Ideally, you would want a keyboard that lets your hands drape naturally over it. I, personally think that this would be a keyboard build into the desk, that drops down and away from you. This way, your arms can rest on the desk and your hands can be placed comfortably on the keys.

Until that comes along, I guess I'm stuck with my first edition MS natural, which is the best keyboard I've found so far...

I had this idea before SHOUTcast came out...not that I think it's better :) My idea would necessitate a new client app to play the stream :(
