  1. Sugar Cane on Dept. of Energy Rejects Corn Fuel Future · · Score: 1

With the advent of farming technology and the decline of slavery in the United States, we can now grow something besides cotton in the southern part of the country. Really, there's no more need for big men with machetes in sugar cane any more.

  2. Famous recording artists make crap sometimes on Record Labels Struggle With the Album's Demise · · Score: 1

Few artists have ever released an album that is entirely golden. The Stones' "Beggars Banquet," the Beatles' "Abbey Road," the Doors' "Strange Days," and Led Zeppelin's "Led Zeppelin 2" come to mind, but these are MY selections, and are entirely subjective. I have a complete Frank Zappa library in CD format, but this includes some albums I hardly ever play and some which get played weekly. Bob Dylan also comes to mind, and while I own many of his CD's, I almost never listen to his "Jesus Albums," and have been listening to "Modern Times" daily for a few months now.

  3. Beta testing on MS Says Vista Selling At Twice XP's Pace · · Score: 1

I have faithfully upgraded and used Windows, from Version 3.0 through XP Professional w/SP2. No more. I presently own an Athlon 64 3200, which works fine with IE 7 and Firefox 2.0.0.3, and I refuse to buy a new computer with Windows Vista installed or upgrade my present machine to Vista until at least the release of SP1. Based on previous experience, this should not be too long in coming down the line!

  4. New music on DMCA Creator Admits Failure, Blames RIAA · · Score: 1

Think about the last time you heard anything new. I remember the first time I heard The Beatles, back in 1964. I was a junior in high school at the time. That music knocked me back into my chair! The next band to do this was Rolling Stones. The next was Led Zeppelin. The common thread? Every time was a new experience for my senses. Even though the Stones and Led Zeppelin were throwing American Blues back at us, the sound was new to me and many other people at the time.

Contemporary pop stars have no real talent, they only have production values. Utter Crap!

  5. What music has become on CD Music Sales Down 20% In Q1 2007 · · Score: 1

Ten years ago, I bought at least one CD every weekend. True, I was re-buying lots of LPs I had previously owned, but there was also some excellent new music. Last year I bought two CDs, Neil Young and Dixie Chicks, both of which were purchases to support musicians who had come out against the War in Iraq.

Frankly, the new music really is not that great. When I heard the Beatles and Rolling Stones in 1964, and then Led Zeppelin in 1969, that music like nothing I had ever heard before, and the loader it was played, the better it sounded. In the past few years, bands and artists I really like are few and far between. I liked Green Day, White Stripes, Mark Knopfler, and Rob Zombie, to name some of what I listened to and enjoyed. Some time ago, I ripped all of my CDs into 320kps MP3 files, and mostly listen to Zappa and Laurie Anderson these days.

Goddamned kids! Get off my lawn!

  6. True age of the Earth on How to Turn A Music Lover to Piracy · · Score: 1

The Archbishop of Ussher declared, after a careful study of Biblical geneologies, that the earth was created in 6006 BC, on October 31, at nine o'clock in the morning. Therefore, you are BOTH wrong. The earth is really 8013 years old. http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/4,500,000,000_BC_to_1 BC All praise to the FSM!

  7. Subliminal Suggestion on Subliminal Messages Might Actually Work · · Score: 1

A long time ago, back when the world was new, I was in Graduate School in Business, and in the consumer behavior course, the final exam had an essay question (back in the day, one really had to know stuff to get through school), "You are at a seminar and scheduled to attend a series of meetings that will last all day. The first panel will be discussing subliminal suggestion. What do you do to prepare for this discussion?" My response was that I would skip the panel and go sit in the hotel bar for a couple of hours until the next panel, because subliminal suggestion is fake science. I got the full points for that answer, and in over thirty years I have never read anything to dissuade myself of that opinion!

  8. Religion gene? on Humans Hardwired to Believe in Supernatural Deity? · · Score: 1

Religion is the result of smarter people taking advantage of simpler people. Although I support neither politics nor clergy, I think if I was interested in getting rich while controlling lots of other people, I would do whatever it took to become a member of the clergy!

  9. Firewall and A/V products on A Bad Week for Symantec · · Score: 1

It comes down to what you believe is necessary. I get EZ Armor Firewall and A/V as a gimmee from Roadrunner. My Internet experience is fast, and there is never any slowdown while safe programs get massaged over and over to no purpose.

  10. Pastafarianism on Two Ways Not To Handle Free Speech · · Score: 1

The GOSPEL OF THE FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER is in my bathroom, where it may be read by anyone who visits. I suggest that anyone wishing to contemplate noodliness might seek out "The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster."

  11. Creating a class of criminals on Teens Prosecuted For Racy Photos · · Score: 1

Frank Zappa, deceased i9conoclast, once wrote - Eventually it was discovered that God did not want us to be all the same. This was bad News for the Governments of The World as it seemed contrary to the doctrine of Portion Controlled Servings. Mankind must be made more uniformly if the Future was going to work. Various ways were sought to bind us all together. But, alas same-ness was unenforcable. It was about this time that someone came up with the idea of Total Criminalization. Based on the principle that if we were all crooks, we could at least be uniform to some degree in the eyes of The Law. Shrewdly, our legislators calculated that most people were too lazy to perform a Real Crime. So new laws were manufactured, making it possible for anyone to violate them any time of the day or night, and once we had all broken some kind of law we'd all be in the same big happy club, right up there with the President, the most exalted industrialists, and the clerical big shots of all your favorite religions Total Criminalization was the greatest idea of its time, and was vastly popular except with those people who didn't want to be crooks or outlaws. So, of course, they had to be tricked Into It, which is one of the reasons why Music was eventually made illegal. FRANK ZAPPA - "Joe's Garage" (1979)

  12. Romans in China on DNA to Test Theory of Roman Village in China · · Score: 1

Ah yes. . .the XI Expeditionary Legion was first led by Biggus Dickus, and after his death, by Naughtius Maximus.

  13. T-Bird 2.0 beta on A look at Thunderbird 2.0 Beta · · Score: 1

I put this product on my machine as an upgrade to the previous edition, and the installation went flawlessly. The only obvious difference is the appearance of the new toolbar. I think I like it, but it's hard to see much difference after using all of the previous incarnations of the T-bird product!

  14. Too many lawyers on RIAA Mischaracterizes Letter Received From AOL · · Score: 1

There are too many lawyers chasing too few ambulances. The United States is the most lawyered-up country on the planet! In Wisconsin, if you graduate from the law school at either UW-Madison or UW-Milwaukee, you are exempted from the Bar Examination. The most famous lawyer locally is Fighting Joe Paulus, former District Attorney, who is currently serving a few years in a federal prison for tax fraud and accepting bribes.

  15. Compensating artists on Warner CEO Admits His Kids Stole Music · · Score: 1

How about an entirely new model? Why not have artists charge admission to their performances and give away recordings as advertising? Distribution on the Internet costs almost nothing. If a performer is any good, then people will pay to see and hear them live. If they suck, then the recordings will suck, too.

  16. silent prayer on Clinton Prosecutor Now Targeting Free Speech · · Score: 1

I call B.S.! If your wife was praying silently, and not urging others to join her, how could she have been busted for praying? Jesus himself, when asked asked how to pray, answered that the supplicant should go into a private room and pray silently. Asshat!

  17. Kenneth Starr on Clinton Prosecutor Now Targeting Free Speech · · Score: 1

Kenny Starr. Oh yeah...he's the guy who cost the US Government several million dollars prosecuting the Bill Clinton Presidency to no ultimate effect. I sure hope that school district has a HUGE capital reserve fund for when they have to eat a lawsuit over this!

  18. New Interface on Office 2007 UI License · · Score: 1

I, for one, plan to welcome our Microsoft overlords into my home and office, just like last time!

  19. Tazer news on Students Put UCLA Taser Video On YouTube · · Score: 1

The event of the UTube posting of the tazering of the brown-skinned student at the UCLA Library may or may not signal the end of freedom. It does, however, signal the end of both the paper press and television news!

  20. Zappa Quote on Draconian Anti-Piracy Law Looms Over Australia · · Score: 1

  21. Math for Computer Science on What Math Courses Should We Teach CS Students? · · Score: 1

I studied calculus in college, but the most valuable course for getting my head around computers has been a rigorous high school geometry course, taken over forty-five years ago. The formal proofs of theorems help a person discover and learn to lay out a step-by-step algorithm of traveling from point A to point B in a process, which is what using computers and programming is all about!

  22. Wizards on Should Online Stores Be Subject To ADA? · · Score: 1

Dark wizards? I always thought it was Dork wizards!

  23. Help the peple who just fired me? on Spam That Delivers a Pink Slip · · Score: 1

Yeah, like I am so going to help the people who just fired me. Let 'em burn!

  24. spam on company computer on Spam That Delivers a Pink Slip · · Score: 1

Is this infected PC the company's property or the employee's? If it belongs to the company, and they infected their own machines, who cares!?! Good for a grin, I say.

  25. Boiling water on Congressman Calls for Arrest of Security Researcher · · Score: 1

If a person can demonstrate a flaw in a system that causes risk to others, he is obligated to expose it. This is not unlike declaring the boiling temperature of water to be a state secret.
